When Nicole Kidman’s father died suddenly, her husband, American Idol judge, Keith Urban rushed to be by her side. In the interim, American Idol season 8 alum, Adam Lambert, stepped in to take his place next to Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. on the judges panel in New York City.
Although Adam had played mentor in both seasons 9 and 13, it was his–or any other Idol alum’s–first time as a guest judge!
In this clip from the New York Auditions, which aired on FOX Thursday January 15 (8/7c PM 2HRS), Harry expresses disappointment that he wasn’t on the judges panel when Adam initially auditioned back in 2009. He asks the singer if he’d recreate the moment. Adam does–crooning “Bohemian Rhapsody,” his audition song those many years ago. “I’m gonna stand up for THAT,” says Harry after Adam kills it. “YOU MADE ME NERVOUS!” laughs Adam. The clip is pretty awesome.
“To hear him talk to these people when they were auditioning is really cool,” said Harry during the broadcast, “because he’s been through the entire American Idol process, gives him a perspective that’s completely unique.”
