American Idol Season 6 is Coming…

Fox has announced the schedule for Idol Season 6 Audition and Hollywood rounds:

  • Season 6 premiers Tuesday, January 16 with a two-hour episode, followed by another two-hour show Wednesday January 17.
  • Four more audition episodes will air on Tuesday January 23, Wednesday January 24, Tuesday January 30, and Wednesday January 31.
  • The Hollywood rounds debut Tuesday February 6, and will run for 3 more episodes,  starting Wednesday February 7, Tuesday February 13 and Wednesday February 14.

Like Season 4 auditions that featured guest judges–Kenny Loggins, Gene Simmons, Mark McGrath, LL Cool J and Brandy–Season 6 will feature: Jewel in Minneapolis, Olivia Newton-John in Los Angeles and Carole Bayer Sager in New York.

Yep, it looks like the Idol promotion machine is gearing up for the sixth season of American Idol.  I hear Fox has been airing television spots–broadcast heavily during the World Series, carried by Fox (I haven’t seen them yet–I need to watch more TV!).  Here’s a preview of the upcoming season from USA Today:

WARNING:  Hype and Spin ahead…Proceed with caution….

“Seattle is going to be known for something other than coffee this year. They had the worst bunch of miserable singers that I’ve ever met in my life. It was two days of total misery, ” he [Simon Cowell] says. “And the weather was bad, as well.”

That’s a nice hook.  Make Seattle a town full of losers.  Whatever.

The Hollywood round, where singers who survive the regional auditions compete to make the final 24, will run over two weeks starting Feb. 6. This year, about 110 women and 60 men made it to Hollywood, Lythgoe says. “It’s going to be tough on the girls” because so many more are competing for the female half of the 24 spots.

110 women and 60 men?  Gee, do you think they want a girl to win this year?

In the early measures of talent, Cowell gives the nod to the ladies and to the younger singers. He remembers a couple of strong male singers and a woman in Los Angeles who reminded him of “a young Whitney Houston.”

I remember Simon touting the young singers last year too.

“I felt this year from the contestants a lot more passion in terms of excitement and how disappointed they were” when they were rejected, Cowell says.

In other words, the producers coached the kids to be extry-excited in front of Randy, Paula and Simon. Yipee! Season 6 can’t come soon enough. I’m ready.
