    Daughtry unexpectedly stripped, unquestionably skilled

…The overarching irony: Daughtry rocked harder on the “American Idol” tour that visited the Indiana State Fair last summer. On that night, his renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Styx’s “Renegade” reinforced his image as the most aggressive belter in “Idol” history.

When explaining the reason behind Friday’s acoustic performance, Daughtry said the triangular stage in the corner of Birdy’s was too small to accommodate the band’s gear. Does no one in his organization research venues before bookings are made?

If this date was to be a test run for an upcoming tour of larger venues — as Daughtry indicated in a recent interview with The Star — the evening failed on that count.

And it could be said the atmosphere matched an afternoon performance in a record store, not a late-night show featuring the band with the top-selling album in America…

    ‘Idol’ reject bares
    feelings about pics

Axed “American Idol” contestant Antonella Barba – who didn’t exactly get glowing reviews from the judges, especially Simon Cowell – may have survived as long as she did because racy snapshots circulating on the Internet made her instantly recognizable.

    Down the toilet
It’s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I’ve Got a Secretà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ week on Idol. No secret, however, is the fact that the men continue to be completely awful and the women continue to be only sort of completely awful.

    By Dave White

You know what’s great about this season of American Idol? If you said Antonella Barba (a.k.a. Meadow Soprano) on the toilet, then you have your priorities straight. She’s really got this all planned out: a multipronged marketing strategy that employs not only glamour shots of her poopin’ and a-grinnin’ combined with candid pics where she adorably wields a dildo she unearthed on some sort of sorority scavenger hunt, but also a street team of faux-testers who’ve convened at the Kodak Theater to whip up public confusion, new feud-baiting comments from the ladies on The View, and a fresh round of Frenchie Davis talk-show appearances. Is Idol racist and weightist? Frenchie says, earnestly, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I don’t know. Would you like me to sing ‘Seasons of Love’ for you?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ while Rosie hoists the flag of rebellion high on her cruise ship and cries, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Yes, it is!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Meanwhile, Elizabeth Hasslebeck, grasping for coolness straws, adds, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“We should all call and vote for the worst singers!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ……….

    Antonella Barba’s Racy Photo Finish
Booted ‘American Idol’ Contestant Finally Reveals, Well, Hardly Anything, to Reporters

Antonella Barba, the Hester Prynne of “American Idol,” has finally spoken — on “interview shows” affiliated with the Fox network — about the racy photos of her that have been zipping around the Internet for the past few weeks.

But when The Reporters Who Cover Television at last got a whack at her in the afternoon, during the traditional day-after March of the Booted “American Idol” Contestants conference call, their questions about the pictures and about some of the gigs she was now being offered were mostly censored by a publicist from the PR firm that has represented “Idol” producers since the show began…

    Hudson Hits Back at Cowell

Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson has hit back at “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, comparing her experience on the talent show to working at Burger King.

Hudson — who was a contestant on the show in 2004 — was rejected and tipped for failure by Cowell.

‘Idol’ Castoff Head Gets Double-Dose Of Bad News
Cousin Who Staked His Trip To L.A. Killed In Fire

“American Idol” cast off Sundance Head received another painful blow after he was eliminated from the reality show Thursday night, OK Magazine reports.

He found out that his cousin, Burl Head, whom he refers to as his uncle, died in a home fire in Houston.

The magazine reports that Burl had given the “Idol” contestant $1,500 for his stay in Los Angeles during the competition.

Head learned of the tragic news after the broadcast and went to Paula Adbul’s dressing room to inform her.

He told Abdul, sobbing, “I just learned my uncle’s house burned down with him in it today but they didn’t tell me because of the show. They don’t know what happened,” OK reports.

According to the magazine, Abdul was devastated upon learning the news.

Head was eliminated from the reality show during Thursday night’s broadcast. The last few minutes of the show had Head and contestant Sanjaya Malakar as the final two contestants battling to make it to the top 12.

Head, 28, is from Porter, Texas. Head’s profile on the “American Idol” Web site says that his toughest obstacle was growing up after his older brother died in a car crash less than a mile from his house.

A publicist for FOX said Friday that the network does not comment on the contestant’s personal lives.

Older country stars feel slighted at Grand Ole Opry

The Grand Ole Opry showcases old-time country music every week, but some older country stars complain they are being shuffled off the stage at the historic radio show.

Charlie Louvin, Stonewall Jackson and others say they joined the Opry cast decades ago with an understanding: Faithfully make appearances at the Grand Ole Opry at the peak of your career for less than you could earn elsewhere, and the Opry would offer security and a place to perform when the hits stopped coming.

Now they say the Opry has reneged on that unwritten deal and is pushing older stars out. Jackson, 74, has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against the owners of the Opry, the storied home of country music.

“The only ones they want to see in the audience and on stage are young people,” said Joe Edwards, a musician in the Opry’s house band for about 45 years before he says he was asked to leave along with a number of other veteran musicians in 2000….

American Idol Betting odds: bet on who will be eliminated next

….Haley Scarnato odds to be voted out next are +140*, meaning every $10 bet on Haley would pay $14 should she be eliminated from the competition.

This bet looks like a lock. Odd makers at Bookmaker.com priced her odds to win American Idol at +7500*, meaning that only a miracle can make her win.

Same goes for Brandon Rogers, his current odds to be voted out priced at +200* ($20 payout for every $10 bet on Brandon). His odds to win are currently priced at +6500* (translation: no chance in hell he makes it).

Sanjaya Malakar (+450*) and Gina Glocksen (+450*) are next in line on the elimination’s Russian roulette. Malakar could be worth some $10 or $20 bet on, given his past performances and his current odds to be voted out. Every $10 bet on Malakar’s elimination from American Idol would pay $45, a reward definitely worth the risk….

    Paula Abdul Speaks Out
At the ”Idol” Top 12 party, the beleaguered judge lashes out at those questioning her sobriety, comes clean about who’s impressed her so far, and laments the decision to boot Sundance

I was a Sundance fan at the beginning but didn’t like him in Hollywood. Then I went back to being a fan again when he sang Mustang Sally but he lost me this week with his Pearl Jam song. I do think he has a good voice and a lot of potential. I’m sorry he’s gone. Poor guy has been through it this week – how horrible about his cousin. I actually watched his exit interview and was wishing I could give him a hug. Good luck Sundance – Maybe you got just enough exposure to be able to do something in the music biz.

juliegr, I just read your awesome recap of Taylor in Atlanta. You did a fantastic job, you certainly have a way with words, I felt(almost) like I was there. I am still impatiently waiting for San Fran tickets to go on sale.

Madaboutu posted a great link to a fox video from the concert and it seems Katja from Finland was there. I am thrilled for her, she has been one of his most ardent fans from the beginning.

Lol, I live in Indiana, work in Indianapolis and didn’t even know Daughtry was here last night.I guess he was good, smiled a few times, whoo.

I am almost starting to feel sorry for Sanjaya. Simon, hello, you also put Sanjaya through but didn’t Chris or Taylor. Why say carpy things like you will quit when you helped create the monster.Simon continues to create his own unreal reality.

  • Lu

Shar – Exactly. The judge’s bellyaching on these contestants is falling on deaf ears. THEY picked the top 24 – not America. – so they have only themselves to blame. They should be feeling pretty stupid about now.

  • shar

Lu, AMEN and word. Mostly they look too bored to feel anything.

Longsong, my guess is Chris Sligh is who Sundance was talking about as being the guy who thinks he has it in the bag. Chris stikes me as one who puts on a meek and mild act but really impresses himself; a lot.

Who knows, with the free advertising and unfair advantage, imo,he is getting from Amazon, maybe he does have it in the bag.

Lu, maybe he is like a fox, but I think America will catch on though, we aren’t that stupid and nobody likes to be played for a fool.

Interesting exit interview from Sundance, his candor about this arrogant AI contestant actually refreshing and I do feel for the guy, he was pimped like crazy and then just really burned out on the stage.
I was only initially thinking he was talking about Blake, but am now convinced that it is Chris S, he is showing too many of his cards, would make a very bad poker player

This whiny complaining from Simon about America’s choices is really getting old, take responsbility for sending home some very fine singers and creating this odd mismatch of contestants this yr.
You are paid the big bucks and you tanked

GO Elliott, 9 days until the CD drops, and more radio stations every day playing his song, am getting so psyched every day,
    It’s his time to Shine!

  • jadore

Congrats to Elliott and his fans, the wait must have been tough, but so worth it in the end. I bought Movin’ On, Elliott sounds great on it, and I will buy his CD when it drops.

From ‘Idol’ stage, to ‘Opry,’ Bucky makes grand debut

Bucky Covington says don’t be fooled by his calm demeanor as he discusses his debut tonight on the Grand Ole Opry.

“I am trying to act like it’s another gig, but I am sure that five seconds before I go on it will change,” he says. “I’m very excited about it. I’m sure that as soon as I see that little white mike stand with ‘Opry’ all over it, I’ll start shaking in my boots.

“You play a lot of gigs, but this is the one where all the eyes are on you. If you mess up on the Opry, it can really hurt you.”….

Ultimately, HIcks has clearly opted on the side of his musical integrity and identity versus trying to being something heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not. LisaB, SMOOOCHEES…thanks for the articles..So what I’m spending half my Saturday morning reading. Instead of do more productive and meaningful things. Thanks for helping me keep my priorities in line..lol

This is the best part of that review, IMO. That critic needs to take the date stamp off of Taylor’s forehead and let him be. No one is sticking date stamps on Alicia Keys or John Legends foreheads and they have the same old school vibe.

Also, I’m a bit out of the loop. Is it a new thing now to go and see how diverse Taylor’s fans are at his concerts? I really wish the marginalizing of this guy would stop. Add one more thing I need to waste my time doing at his shows. Instead of just enjoying myself.

Dingo, where are you? We have a job to do. Simon says he will quite if Sanjaya wins AI. Let’s call his bluff.

I now find it funny that of the two people Simon liked, he preferred Sundance over Sanjaya. Seriously, who did not see how uncomfortable and timid Sanjaya looked at his audition. If there is any surprise, it was Sundance’s performance since his audition.

I see Jennifer Hudson is not giving AI an inch. Good for her. She sees them for who they are. Let them continue tooting the horns of Carrie and Chris cd sales. Maybe if TPTB at AI recognize their role in these contestants lives and not feel that they are the end all to be all, the contestants would not have any problem giving them their “props.”

One more thing, DAMN Taylor’s bed looks comfortable. Even in it’s messy state..That’s it for the fangirly stuff from me..lol

    Big-screen ‘Idol’ finale must downsize

What’s bad news for “American Idol” fans near Birch Run could be good news for viewers closer to Flint contestant LaKisha Jones’ home.

Local Fox affiliate WSMH (Channel 66) announced Friday that the network put the brakes on plans to show the Season 6 finale May 23 on the big screen at Cinema Hollywood in Birch Run.

But the station is looking for another place to stage it, possibly within Flint city limits……

Thanks Lisa, my coffee tastes much better while reading all the Idol tidbits.

    Morning all.

So I was perusing last nights threads and came across one by griz who was kind enough to show some photos from Taylor’s tour bus. As I was enjoying them I stumbled upon one blue teddy bear and I gotta tell ya, I was more than a little miffed. Whatsamatter? He got somethin’ against white rabbits?

Love Is Here And Now Your Gone…thats my favorite Supremes song.

  • thedingoateyobaby

OMG! What a baby. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got to figure out how to vote for Sanjaya.

Kirsten, I have made it my personal goal to vote for Sanjaya as many times as I can this week. The only thing thats good about this season is the futuristic happening of Sanjaya even making it to the top 5. OMG, it would be priceless to see the look on Simon’s face. For that alone I hafta watch.

LaKeisha and Melinda will be fine. They have already been noticed for the incredible voices each posesses.

Sanjaya (or Sanj as I like ta call him)….call me!

  • thedingoateyobaby

Dingo, where are you? We have a job to do. Simon says he will quite if Sanjaya wins AI. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s call his bluff.

Ahm right here Sexygirl and I intend to do just that. Call his bluff.

  • Cathy

For the first time, I actually am motivated to vote this season.

    GO Sanjaya!!!!!

I think Simon realizes that the American people no longer respect his opinions. At first, Simon was seen as the brutally honest judge who always spoke the truth. More and more people are seeing him as a bully who tries to manipulate the voters.

I don’t think American Idol and especially Simon deserve credit for Jennifer Hudson’s success. She got the part for “Dream Girls” on her own. American Idol didn’t help her get that part. AI had totally forgotten about her until she landed that role.

  • Lisa B

He probably has his own ‘Harvey’ Dingo, no need for a stuffed minature.

Well Diana Ross has a love song album out, so either that’s the theme or a more general Motown one.

  • Ladybug

Simon better be careful. If he ignites the Soul Patrol they may just power vote dear little Sanjaya all the way to the confetti drop.

A uniting of the SP and the tweeners? It could happen! OK, probably not, but that would be sweet, no question.

  • Lisa B

Maybe the voting totals are so low this year, Simon figures this is a way to up the vote and create press at the same time?

  • thedingoateyobaby

Ahm predicting right here and now that E’s CD will ass kickin’ good and will sell extremely well. He wont have to lick his GF’s arm anymore. He can buy himself a salt lick instead. I hear they’re pricey.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Oh gawd I hope they are not going to focus on Diana’s newest CD which, IMHO is awful. Her best years were the early Motown stuff. Some of those…no, many of those songs were magic.

  • shar

Maybe the voting totals are so low this year, Simon figures this is a way to up the vote and create press at the same time?

Lisa, I have no doubt in my mind that the voting totals for this year are extremely low. Especially when you compare them to last year. The judges realize that they have made a mistake in the elimination process/auditions early on I think. They thought they could “play us” but I have a feeling we will have the last word.

Dont fuck with us Simon, we’re a tolerant bunch but dont piss me off cause I swear, I’ll pick up my phone AND I’ll text (which BTW I became VERY good at doing last year)all night fucking long. Dont push me buddy.

Anyway, I really doubt it’s Chrs S that Sundance is talking about, Chris and Sundance became fast and close friends during the competition. The ‘Color’ of money
    Barrino’s Oprah appearance pumps play

“American Idol” may be a ratings powerhouse vs. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” — “Idol” registers approximately 35 million viewers while “Oprah” attracts a relatively paltry 7 million — but when it comes to selling Broadway tickets, it’s all Oprah.
“The Color Purple” got a major national publicity push when third-season “Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino appeared on the show Feb. 22 and announced she would do a stint in “Purple” beginning April 10.

About a week later, on Feb. 28, Barrino talked about her new Broadway gig during a spot on “Oprah.”

“Purple” had experienced some rough weeks at the box office this winter, but once the Barrino news hit, the show’s advance rose by $2 million, according to producer Scott Sanders.

And the majority of that — about $1.5 million — came after Barrino’s appearance on “Oprah.”….

Jared in his exit interview: I’m hoping publicity and 19 Management are looking out for me because I really think I can make it.

Poor guy. Putting his hopes in 19M. I’m sure their doing their best for you. NOT.

How long do these poor saps in the 13-24 range have to put up with 19M as their management?

Also, from the exit interviews (and final 12 party) it does look like Diana Ross/Supreme songs are the theme for next week. “You Can’t Hurry Love” was done by Phil Collins, so I bet the guys are fighting over that one.

  • Ami

Lisa B, I actually have to head out and won’t be back till tonight, but I’ll try to put together a short recap then.

On the topic of Georgia, Cathy is right..this was much shorter. I’m betting that if Taylor had been well we might have gotten a longer version, but I’m not complaining. This man in concert while ill beats all others! You wouldn’t have even known he was ill till near the end of the concert when his voice just wouldn’t go where he wanted it to go.

And the Tabernacle was stifling hot (and I’m one of those really really cold natured people). And the air quality in the place was not great either.

One note to add.. the musicians Taylor has with him on the tour are infuckingcredible!

Now, DialIdol has had him as the top vote getter, but it also had him going home on Thursday (bottom 2). So, either Sundance selectively reads DialIdol or somebody told him the vote totals. They don’t normally do that, do they?

    I thought the same thing.

As for the arrogant person, who knows?

And Jared? Yeah, I’m sure the judges have favorites. Most people do. Sorry that you weren’t one of them.

Finally…everyone knows Simon likes to stir the pot. That’s just him. I still think his take on the singers is quite accurate. I mean all Paula can do sometimes is compliment someone on their outfit. That’s hardly a worthwhile critique. Still this “feud” with JHud is making me sour on her more than on him. Regardless, AI did propel her to some sort of spotlight that she most likely wouldn’t have acheived otherwise.

  • jpfan

I feel sorry for this year’s group. The mega success of AI5 has deluded them. This is more like Season 4 where only the winner really scored big. Did Clive sign the 4th place finisher that year?
I don’t see any big sellers from this group. Antonella and Sundance will at least be remembered. I’ve already forgotten all the other boottees. Simon is worth every dime for the buzz he gets the show.
If not for Sanjaya/Sundance comments today, what would people talk about– Phil and Haley Whatevers singing Diana Ross next week?????

LOL Lisa. I only glare at the ones I love.

As for Taylor, I have come a long way from the days when I wanted him to sell millions of CD’s to where I am now. I now understand that Taylor will never be a superstar but he will always be a skillful musician who posesses an incredible talent and ability to light fires in a room full of people who love music almost as much as he does.

If he can make a great living doing what he loves to do, what more could anyone ask for. Good for you Taylor.

  • Easy

I’m guessing Chris Sligh is the arrogant one Sundance is referring to.

Whoever it is, they’re foolish. No male this year should have any confidence in going far, considering the way the females owned them in the semi-finals.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m guessing Chris Sligh is the arrogant one Sundance is referring to.

What has he done to give everyone this assumption? Just b/c he’s cracked a few jokes or talked directly to Simon? Because he’s received more exposure than the other guys — this makes him the arrogant one?

  • bean99

I think the arrogant one that Sundance was talking about is either Chris R or Chris S.

I hope the real world is different than this blog and doesn’t vote for Sanjaya. I can’t take too many more performances of his and even though Simon can be an ass, the show would be dire without him. :huh_tb:

I think Diana Ross songs are a poor choice and certainly bad for the guys. I’m not a fan of her or the Supremes. I guess it will at least be interesting to see how they all do.

In reference to eliminations.. Do they eliminate one guy and one girl next week or are we down to eliminating just one contestant each week no matter what gender?

Blake, Chris R and Jordin were favoured.

Now that’s interesting…because I haven’t noticed them showing masses of undue love for Jordin, yet she would seem an obvious contestant for the show to pimp: young, cute, engaging personality, sportstar dad and a nicely malleable pop-based voice. Damn near perfect really.

Thinking about that supposed spoiler from IDF saying that Sabrina was earmarked as a “stealth” Chosen One to be pimped at a later date, I wonder if that was a red herring and the actual chosen-one-in-waiting is Jordin?

She’s had some face time but not sufficient to annoy people; she’s also been criticised quite sternly and been made to look as if she might be leaving (when Leslie went) so there could be an element of underplaying her now so as to give her the appearance of growing into the competition later on – viewers are a sucker for the journey.

She just seems a much more likely TCO candidate to me than Sabrina.

    :ponder_tb:

(and then again there is probably no Master Plan…I do like a nice TPTB manipulation theory from time to time though :wink1_tb:)

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

What has he done to give everyone this assumption? Just b/c heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cracked a few jokes or talked directly to Simon? Because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s received more exposure than the other guys à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ this makes him the arrogant one?

LOL, I think it’s because of the exposure, and his dry humor…a lot of people don’t quite ‘get it’.

  • emeralgem

Kirsten, thank you.. I could not remember.

If he can make a great living doing what he loves to do, what more could anyone ask for. Good for you Taylor.

    Well said Dingo.

Superstardom is not what it’s cracked up to be.

Making a very comfortable living doing what you love is a blessing that many will never experience.

Work will always be a joy to Taylor, never a chore.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

She just seems a much more likely TCO candidate to me than Sabrina.

But unfortunately, from a record-selling standpoint, she’s not profitable because they can’t put her in a music video and show her rolling around on a carpet and hiking a shirt up to her mid-thighs. She’s a curvy girl and the industry doesn’t take too kindly to curvy girls (I’m talking America Ferrara curvy, not Beyonce curvy, although Beyonce does look great after gaining back the weight she lost for “Dreamgirls”). Sabrina had more of a conventional pop-star look–petite figure, large chest, etc. I could see Jordin on the Disney channel or maybe Nickelodeon, but not as a mainstream pop artist. Which is not a knock on her talent–it’s a knock on the industry’s standards.

  • jpfan

The Atlanta interview with Taylor was great. He sounded really good in the clips. For the first time I went to Yes. com, typed in Elliott Yamin and found he’d been played 4 times in CA and FL. Typed in Kat and saw No recent plays. I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe. I hereby swear on a Bible not to list every station playing Elliott.

  • Lisa B

    LOL, I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because of the exposure, and his dry humorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦a lot of people donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t quite à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹get ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

We Brits understand ‘dry’ humour, sadly many don’t and it can work against you.

It’s a risky in a popularity contest and can come over as arrogance.

Kat: I could see Jordin on the Disney channel or maybe Nickelodeon, but not as a mainstream pop artist.

Given how many units those Disney kids consistently move, maybe that’s the market TPTB want to go after this year.

Who knows what they are up to this year? They are keeping us on our toes trying to guess who is TCO. Last year, it was clear as a bell who they wanted to win by this point in the competition.

Either their plans have been ruined by Sanjaya and Hayley, or these wiley dudes have another one up their sleeves.

Chosen ones tend to get featured solos in group songs, they tend to get positive air time, they get saved from their gaffs, they get extra interviews from Ryan. Who has gotten all of these things? Chris Sligh (Sanjaya has never had a group song solo….even Antonella got one this week). But, perhaps they are going with the stealth chosen one this year. Maybe they are modelling this year after Elliott’s run last year.

  • Easy

Well I’m not going to pretend I know Chris Sligh and anyone who doesn’t agree doesn’t “get it”. I’ll save that for the others.

I’m just guessing he’s the one. I wouldn’t think any of them would have that attitude, but since Sundance claims one does, my guess is Sligh. He’d seem the most likely to me to have that kind of arrogance considering he fancies himself a real musician pre-Idol.

I just hope it isn’t Blake Lewis. He’s the only guy left in the competition that I would actually care to see do well.

  • MaryS-NJ

Yeah, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure the judges have favorites.

Last season Paris Bennett said that everyone knew Chris D. was the judges’ favorite. I think everyone believed he was the front runner too, even Taylor (who was in fact the front runner vote-wise per Dial Idol anyway almost every week). So, no doubt the perceptions are different behind the scenes than what we see from our angle. That’s probably why the judges were stunned that Sundance didn’t do better. They may see some greatness that we weren’t.

As for Sundance’s rude awakening, he bought himself some grace after Mustang Sally, but by and large he was very inconsistent and more bad than good. And last week’s blubber-fest may have turned off as many people as it touched.

  • squishy

After watching “pimped boy” Chris Daughtry not win, no Idol contestant should EVER think that he or she has it in the bag.

Hopefully Sundance is just misinterpretting an Idol contestant’s “arrogance” and thinking he/she is going to win for “confidence” which is needed to survive in this competition.

  • vegasdee

Hey Dingo! I missed ya! I think the “guy” Sundace is referring to has to be Chris R., he has been pimped, tounge bathed when he didn’t really deserve it, out of all the top 12 he and brandon are the most marketable from a record-selling standpoint (tm KAT), probelem is brandon has not lived up to the hype, and has faltered badly since his original audition. Chirs R. could be a jtlite, or as RSF call him sexyback2, much like how Daughtry is Nickelback, Hinder, only difference is Daughtry can actually sing on par with the lead singers of these bands. It can’t be Blake, imo, because Blake doesn’t fit into a “nice little box”, like Chris R., mark my words soon the judges will turn on Blake, I’m sure tptb see nothing but $$$ signs with Chris R. Jordin is a favorite, because Simon is scared of her dad and his peeps. Mr. Vegas is from the same “hood” in Phx. as Phillipe, and he said if Simon is mean to Phillipe’s baby girl, all of Lindell Park will be after him…. :wink_ee:

  • MaryS-NJ

folk, I hope it’s Motown in general and not DivaDiana specifically, but I can’t remember exactly what Ryan said. Either way, poor Sanjaya. It will be interesting (to me) to see if Chris R. can move beyond music of the last 5 minutes and actually do something from another era and style. I suspect Blake and Sligh can adapt, but we’ll see. I think Brandon will do something passable but dull and most of the girls will be okay or great (as long as her Divaness doesn’t bitchy about being upstaged).

  • Kirsten

folk: what exactly is the theme this week anyways? is it really motown? talk about skewed toward the women!

It’s more skewed than that. It appears to be Supreme’s week because booted contestants were mentioning the Supreme song they had selected to sing had they not been booted (and some of the Final 12 mentioned they were having a tough time picking a Diana Ross song).

  • PamsterAtl

Morning all – just a quick post and then I am off to do errands. Saw Taylor last night and he was just fabulous. I thought it was ironic that my two favorites from the album, Heaven Knows and Give Me Tonight just didn’t come across as well live as on the album… maybe I was expecting too much. However, Gonna Move – which I considered ‘meh’ on the album came across live really well. Maybe it’s his added stuff and maybe the band was better able to make it fly. But also his slower ballads came across better. I had to stuff tissue in my ears to be able to enjoy the concert and still there was distortion. Sigh – sound techs are all deaf I swear! And my night was complete when he encored with Georgia. He did it so sweetly – much better than when I heard him at Smiths Old bar last year – but no harmonica this time- he had to leave.

The two guys next to me were fun to meet – they had won the tickets from 98.5. Yippee a radio station in Atlanta actually remembers who Taylor is! I am switching to this station! My biggest problem was climbing to the balcony (after walking extra blocks from the train station and waiting in line so long) and my legs are so crampy today that I don’t think I can do much today (NO CLEANING!). So – that’s my brief recap of my night with Taylor. Great concert – so enjoyable live. The guys hadn’t bought his cd, even though they enjoyed him on show last year and I told them beforehand that they will really enjoy him performing live — and I was right. They did. Me too!

  • MaryS-NJ

Hopefully Sundance is just misinterpretting an Idol contestantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“arroganceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and thinking he/she is going to win for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“confidenceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which is needed to survive in this competition.

He seems to be a very sensitive Dude. He also seems to be very literal. He may take joking or sarcastic comments as if they were meant literally, but then again I get a “cocky” vibe from a bunch of these guys (Chris R and Blake, maybe Brandon) and Sligh seems a little too-cool-for-school at times (although he’s toned it down recently).

  • star

Well I don’t want to believe Chris Sligh is the one Sundance is talking about, but I have to admit Sligh doesn’t come off very well in his interview with Cat Deeley this week:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e24WYdJUpR0

But Sundance is really one to talk. Just read his exit interviews – he has quite the high opinion of himself as well. :rolleyes_wp:

  • jersey

Thanks for the recap, Pam. I’m glad you had a good time. As far as the “one who thinks they have the competition sewn up”, I betting it’s Chris R. He has been really high on dial idol every week, and the judges are pimping him big time. Even when his performance is only so-so (which is every week in my opinion). He’s an ex-jock and definitely gives off an arrogant type of vibe.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

    Hhahaha. Sligh has the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“belly of deathà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

and if contestants take song suggestions from other contestantsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦that is just stupid.

EXACTLY! LOL It’s a JOKE! A funny one too IMHO

    Hee

  • jersey

I took Sligh’s comments to Cat whoever as a joke also.

  • PamsterAtl

I think it is Chris Sligh that Sundance was referring to – for some reason, I gather that his confidence can be taken as arrogance – especially considering that as a heavy guy, he can’t be ‘hunky’ since he is ‘chunky’. Perhaps Sundance as a fellow chunky was jealous of Chris’s ability to come across as charming w/o worrying about his image so much. Sundance probably hasn’t been as successful overcoming his deficiencies and perhaps is super sensitive. I enjoy the ‘cockiness’ that Chris Sligh brings – it’s refreshing. I am glad though that he has wisely toned it down since so many people can misinterpret brief images that are shown on the tv.

As for Jordin, I do see her more of a Disney station favorite – also Haley would do well with Disney.

Ok I’m not sure when or where you typed in this information, I’m assuming on the Yes site, but Katharine has been played at least 15 times in the last 15 minutes.

Anyway enough about that, please, please don’t vote for Sanjaya just to spite Simon, this guy really does not deserve to be there, I don’t think I could bare to watch him for more than a few weeks or a week for that matter. Ugh.

  • Little Boy Blue

This line from the Atlanta Journal Constitution explains why Taylor’s music will have a hard time selling platinum today :

Part of the reason why heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not pulling in Daughtry-level sales is the fact heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happily stuck in the 1970s. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no real place for his old-soul music on contemporary radio.

    In fact, listening to his tunes, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d think music stopped in 1980. His covers included a tribute to Marvin Gaye (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Get It Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the Commodoresà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nightshiftà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) and Supertrampà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 1979 hit à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Goodbye Stranger.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

But then, this post from a responder tells me that Taylor’s wish to become a second version of Jimmy Buffet might be more realistic :

I was there and I did not see anyone leave. The floor was full, the balcony was full, the walls were lined with people not able to get a seat. There was not a space to be had there. Also, I disagreed on the ages of the people. There were a lot of young people there in their twenties seemed to me. I absolutely loved the concert and Georgia was fantastic. Of course I loved it all, but this was the end to a perfect day!

  • cheese

Wow, sucks to have a ‘y’ chromosome this week. I hope someone does
“My World Is Empty Without You.” That song has some potential to be changed up.

I have no reason to believe that Sundance could do better than what I have seen. Under pressure he caved. Period. All of these guys need to throw caution to the wind this week and growl like there’s no tomorrow. Growl like they mean it. Growl with such feeling that I can feel it in my living room. I was thinking…this whole Diana Ross episode on Idol could work to the advantage of the guys cause everyone knows and expects the girls to really kick SERIOUS ass on these tunes but the expectations for the guys is pretty low because of the song selection. It would have been so much better if they had a generalized “Motown” week. The guys have an unfair disadvantage this week and everyone knows it.

If one of the girls screws up even a little on a famous Supremes hit, they will be shredded. Maybe thats the whole idea.

You listen to, for example, “Your All I Need To Get By” on iTunes and some of those lyrics and notes are deeply profound. You better not fuck up baby or your gonna get called on it. I think they will give the boys more latitude. JMHO.

If per chance you lurk at all, I miss you and I need a new song to cry by. I need a new “Hit The Ground” or “Pride” or “Lifetime”or “Whether You Fall” or “When It Dont Come Easy”.

    lancelot14466@yahoo.com.

    ahm beggin’ ya girl.

  • Kirsten

Kat: Probably. Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Katharine pick up à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Who Wants to Live Foreverà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ during Queen week after Mandisa got the boot?

She did indeed. She had originally planned to do a different song, but snapped up WWtLF when Mandisa left.

  • Kirsten

    11. Impossible Dream

I think we have a winner for Sanjaya.

    Here are the Supremes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnAOilqxdEA

  • SEXYGIRL

Sexygirl, if, when Taylor is in NY he sings Billy Joelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NY State of Mind. I think I will cry for not being there. OMG, that would put me over the edge.

Something tells me if he does that song it will be done at the Westbury theater. Billy Joel is a LI boy. NYC might get that song also or something else..

Is it just me, but does it feel like the real reason for this whole charity benefit AI is doing is more to get Bono on the show than to raise money for an awareness that has been existing for a very long time. Don’t get me wrong, if the benefit raises the money and it’s used for the purpose in which it’s being presented, I’m a happy camper. But, my intuition senses that there is more to this fund raising benefits than starving kids in Africa.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Sexygirl, I agree with you that there is something more behind it. Somehow, I don’t think they’re pleased with the trend in voting/ratings this year or the quality of the group they chose. I think this is one way to stave off disinterest.

  • Kirsten

Sexygirl: But, my intuition senses that there is more to this fund raising benefits than starving kids in Africa.

Me? I think it’s Emmy bait.

Call me cynical, but that’s what I think is up.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    RE: the charity thing

Well, before the season even started, much less the voting rounds, Nigel was already talking about a midseason surprise. So it wasn’t just thrown in because they are disappointed in voting trends or ratings.

And is Bono actually coming on the show, or just endorsing the campaign?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    Me? I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Emmy bait.

Very good point, Kirsten. I hadn’t thought of that yet. They are just DYING to win that Emmy.

  • JustSomeGuy

    I confess, I never liked the Supreme’s.
Their first song to hit top40 radio, ‘Where Did Our Love Go,’ was all right, but after that …blah……
Atdd to this the Diana Ross factor…she comes across as well, a person sadly lacking in warmth to put it mildly.
Fasten your seat belts, it’ll be a real train wreck this week.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Idol does NOTHING without a motive and so yes, Im sure there is an ulterior motive for the whole charity gig but you know what? I dont give a shit. I’ll take their money however they want to give it and if it helps with Africa’s woes including AIDS and Darfur(which is my pet project at the moment) then so be it. I’ll take it.

And I dont want to forget the poverty and neglect that exists right here in our own country starting with Appalachia and never forgetting the ruin that remains in NO.

  • thedingoateyobaby

JSG, I never liked Diana Ross either but I LOVED her when she was a Supreme. Loved that whole era. When she went solo? Not so much.

  • bruno

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll put it like this – Diana Ross night will make me as miserable as a John Denver night would. Those of you who know me well on this blog know that that is serious misery.

lu – you put a knife through my heart!

  • JustSomeGuy

This year’s theme, starving children in Africa.

Next year, I propose the theme of climate change. Special guest star Al Gore singing:
“Top down summer in the city,
Back of my next gettin’ dirty, gritty.”

    To DIE for! LMAO.

  • SEXYGIRL

Maybe one of the guys will do à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Touch Me In the Morningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and really turn up the cheese. That would at least be entertainingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Phil maybe?

Okay, here is where I’m going to get some evil looks and called mean names. But, I was thinking that Sanjaya could sing ‘I’m coming out.” He would not have to stretch his vocals much and it’s cheesy enough that he can have fun with it…LOL

Also, another song that I think might work for Sanjaya and since some of Diana’s songs are re-make of other songs, why not “Why Do Fools Fall in Love.”

  • Cathy

thedingoateyobaby, you would get along great with my daughter. She is going to Uganda and Rwanda this summer to do volunteer work.

I agree that whatever the motives, the money is greatly needed. I only hope that it goes to reliable organizations that actually use the money wisely.

  • MaryS-NJ

Apparently Ricky is feeding info to IDF again (as reported at VFTW) and the theme is Motown, not strictly Diana Ross songs.

Ohhhhh Cathy…your daughter is a MUCH better person than I. No way would I do that. Are you kidding? I wont even fly to Boston for petesake!

I have always given my money (what extra I have) to Africa and my newest endeavor has been darfur for the last 4 years. I hope the fates smile down on your daughter and keep her safe. One thing for sure is that when she gets back she will have experienced true love and desperation and profound sadness. She will never be quite the same. That cant be a bad thing. Hug her for me.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Mary, if that’s the truth, I hope Blake does “Papa was a Rolling Stone”. Reading at TWoP last night in his thread (I got it to load when I left here, and yeah, I was up for another 2 hours. UGH.)… anyway, people were saying they’d read an article that he did that song the first round in Hollywood and KILLED it. Got a standing “O” from Randy and everything. So, I hold out hope… :thumbup_tb:

Here is a total cheat….one of the guys could sing “Yesterday”. The Supremes recorded on their 1966 album “I Hear a Symphony” (okay, everybody has recorded it. There are over 3000 versions of it out there).

Here they are doing it live in Holland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fF7E82bm8c

Dingo, I’m still waiting for last year’s BIG celebrity charity event money to reach it’s destination. Or, was the purpose of the event to have citizens like you and me force our government to cough up the money. Quite a loft goal for Goulduff (??) or whatever his name is and BONO. *This is where I insert a BIg eye-rolling* We can barely get our government to past a simple bill and we are going to force them to give up millions, on top of what they already give, just because some celebrity say they should..

Whatever happened to all the money that was raised after the first Big fund raising event. Oprah built a school for those kids in Africa faster..

  • thedingoateyobaby

    JSG!!

Yeah baby!! THATS what ahm talkin’ bout! Kelly Clarkson growled and sang her ASS off on that song. She was unpolished, yes, but you could see more than a glimpse of that diamond voice of hers and I say its in the growl. If you can growl, if you can put that raw raspy voice out there and make me feel like you feel it then you have just won AI.

I LOVE that song especially in a slowed down tempo.

  • MaryS-NJ

Apparently Ricky is feeding info to IDF again (as reported at VFTW) and the theme is Motown, not strictly Diana Ross songs.

A minor clarification… I just went to IDF (ugh) and checked for myself. Ricky started a thread titled “Motown Cleared Songs” with no commentary that I can see, and a list of songs, some of which have been performed before on AI. If he explicitly said that it’s a Motown theme I can’t find it. However, reading between the lines it looks like that may be the theme.

  • MaryS-NJ

Thanks Steve. So it’s still “rumor” at this point. I personally think it would offer a better range of choices than just Diana songs but we’ll see.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Oprah built a school for those kids in Africa faster..

Oprah is a very good source to send money to and I agree with you about the age old question (where does the money go) but Bono’s real contribution is to make the world AWARE and he has been doing that for decades now through his music and appearances. Thats almost as impostant and as Time Magazine said when trying to find their person/persons of the year….
Time said Bono’s campaign to make rich countries address the debt of poorer ones has had an equally impressive impact on the world.

Thats good enough for me for now. Baby steps. All I know is that we invaded Iraq and its cost us billions of dollars and many many lives. I could think of a lot better things to do with that money besides destruction and death but what do I know.

Sorry, I went off on a tangent as is so often the case.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Sarah, and again, with george Huff who really was fantastic, he had the rasp in the voice. Im convinced you need that to make me feel a song. he was fabulous.

MaryS-NJ, that list is incredible and there is something there for EVERYONE. IF that was the list, there will be no room for excuses.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

So, if that IS the list to choose from, who’s going to do “Heatwave”? You KNOW someone is. My guess would be Stephanie.

Dingo, George was the heart and soul of AI3 for me. When he left, I was finished with that season. No one else captured me like he did. And since it was my first season watching, it and he will always hold a special place in my (AI-obsessed) heart.

Sarah, I’d guess Hayley because it’s uptempo and can be popified (like Linda Ronstadt) or maybe Jordin.

Heh, apparently The Who did a cover of this as well.

    ********************************
Dingo: I agree I’ll take the charity for Africa any way. But it seems like AI will be noted as the philanthropists while the AI voters line the sponsors pockets and possible increase ratings once again…

My momma and the nuns always taught me “Charity begins at home” I would simply be content with charitible words on AI’s part. By that I mean Charitible Words for the contestants who have taken the risk to audition for them. It seems to me that removing the national TV humiliation would be a hugely charitible act on AI’s part. And you know and words don’t cost a thing…

I also agree that this is a ploy for that elusive emmy. Charity in the name of love and compassion? I think NOT.

O my dilemma. Do I use my Go phone (still loaded with 60$ from last year) to keep Sunjaya and thereby participate in this smoke and mirrors? WWDD?

So, I’m reading this EW interview with the top 12 and this stuff jumps out to me:

    Here’s the link
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007164_20008533_20014688_2,00.html

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There are a lot of theme nights coming up. Any you’re looking forward to? Any you’re not looking forward to?

BLAKE LEWIS: Tony Bennett. I have a [music] improv background, so if I can work with that man, that’ll be just, man, awesome.

Any song you haven’t sung yet, or haven’t gotten cleared yet, that you really want to perform?

BRANDON ROGERS: ”Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley.

BLAKE LEWIS: ”Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap, I kind of want to do that, with strings or maybe a capella.

Is there something about your appearance you’d like to make over, or definitely don’t want to touch?

BLAKE LEWIS: Definitely not. I came here with my own style, just being me. No one’s telling me what to do. Everything you see here are all my own clothes. (Good for him, but I hope that outlook doesn’t end up hurting him.)

CHRIS RICHARDSON: I don’t want to change anything, I am who I am and they might want to change something but I just want to stay true to myself. (You, mean, stay true to the JT clone?)

BRANDON ROGERS: I like me just the way I am… and nobody’s changing my hair. (WOO HOO! Love the hair!)

CHRIS SLIGH: I’ve lost about 30 pounds since Hollywood. So I’m trying to look better. Obviously, TV is a visual medium, and I understand that. I’d want to keep [my hair] a little longer. I don’t want to go in the same direction that Justin Guarini did, but I think we’re going to look at making it fall a little bit more and making it a little more rock star. (Good for you, too!)

PHIL STACEY: I’d pretty much be down for whatever, if they start putting wigs on my head, that kind of thing. It’s fun. We’ll see. You never know. (LMAO. I really hope he is kidding here.)

Do you remember the first song you sang in front of an audience?

CHRIS SLIGH: Yeah, I sang ”His Eyes On A Sparrow” when I was 8 years old for my dad in church. I forgot the words, and my dad told me I shouldn’t sing anymore. [Laughs]

Good stuff. I love those kinds of articles.

One of my favorite and absolutely funniest acts I’ve ever seen was a few years ago in a local “talent” show, three very prominent men of our community lip-synched to the Supremes “Don’t Throw Our Love Away”, complete with the synchronized dance moves, wigs, long evening gowns and all.
    They were great! LOL

  • Debs

ETA: This song reminds us of your honesty and strength Dingo.

  • Paula

I was there and I did not see anyone leave. The floor was full, the balcony was full, the walls were lined with people not able to get a seat. There was not a space to be had there. Also, I disagreed on the ages of the people. There were a lot of young people there in their twenties seemed to me. I absolutely loved the concert and Georgia was fantastic. Of course I loved it all, but this was the end to a perfect day!

I agree with this poster. There were just a few people that left right before the Encore. They most likely didn’t think Taylor would be coming back on stage. The Tabernacle was packed — very hot even on the floor. Taylor’s jacket was soaked in back, but I know it usually is anyway. There were lots of young people in their twenties, as well as more men than I expected. I even mentioned that to my daughter. Wish I was on my way to Birmingham.

I heard Aretha’s “My Way” on the radio yesterday and I downloaded it immediately. 88.5 in Tampa was doing an hour of “women of soul” for International Women’s Day and it was awesome.

Katharine did not sing a song originally done by a woman, Hound dog done by Big Mama Thorton is a different song then the “callback” that elvis presley did, which he also had a hand in writing. But there are three nights that were male singing nights, love songs is not skewed female wise, the same way 50s isn’t skewed male wise. Also all of the guests/mentors on the show were male…(without shakira being included who didn’t interact at all with the contestants)

  • vegasdee

Hi Debs! Hey Dingo! I think Sanjaya should sing Love Child, to bad it wasn’t cleared.

  • thedingoateyobaby

    Debs,

oh for the love of gawd, THIS is why I NEED you. Im not crazy about the song but holy shit, that girl has a voice to die for. I couldnt find anything on her except one single she did.

Marc Broussard’s “Let Me Leave”……oh boy, thats a beauty.

Roberta and Donny singing “I Who Have Nothing”. OMG, I have never been so in the mood to fuck as I am right now. I know that was crude but its exactly how I feel hearing that song!

OK, the feeling passed lol. I almost kissed my bunny slipper for godsake.

Sarah – I loved your earlier comment about George Huff. He was also “it” for me during Season 4 and I didn’t vote after he left.

Dingo – I agree with everything you’ve said about Darfur and I, too, have also been involved with donations for a couple of years now. It’s amazing how many people do not have a clue about the tragic events taking place in Darfur and Africa in general. I’m glad AI also mentioned assisting those who need it in our own country – not only in areas hit by disasters but in other poverty-stricken areas as well. If AI can get this message out to over 30 million viewers, well, that’s a start. I’m not really caught up in the “whys” of AI’s involvement – I’m just glad AI is involved, whatever the motive.

Aw, I LOVE Roberta Flack’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”! LOVE it! Maybe if you close your eyes, and imagine Taylor singing it – the way he did YASB. :)

Carla, Debs just told me about Amy Winehouse and I LOVE her!

Regarding YASB, your right Des, that was also a boring song but taylor was able to make some real magic with it. It was the vulnerability factor I think cause I wonder if I would have liked it by him if I wasnt able to see him sing it.

Amy Winehouse Drops US Debut Back To Black 3-13

Amy Winehouse has been hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between jazz legend Billie Holiday and hip hop and R&B lovely Lauryn Hill. The British soul singer Amy Winehouseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s U.S. debut, Back To Black (Universal Republic Records) hits stores this Tuesday, March 13, amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren. Back to Black has already reached #1 in England and garnered the 23 year old Amy Winehouse a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist…….

    You guys are the best.

Regarding YASB, your right Des, that was also a boring song but taylor was able to make some real magic with it. It was the vulnerability factor I think cause I wonder if I would have liked it by him if I wasnt able to see him sing it.

See, both songs have the same kind of ‘feel’ to me, and truly I believe that Taylor could weave the same kind of magic with Roberta’s song that he did with YASB. I still get goose bumbs when I listen to it in the car (on the cd I burned with his AI songs). I would have fallen in love with him singing that song even without seeing him, because I think his vulnerability comes through just in his voice. Much like “The Right Place” does, and “Places I’ve Been”, and “Wherever I Lay My Hat”.

  • Debs

    Dingo,

LOL…I really do miss you and think of you. Roberta Flack has a jazz sensibility, maybe that’s it. Her early work is effin incredible imo ie, “First Time”.

  • thedingoateyobaby

LOL Debs, you know me too well. You really do have a pretty good handle on the kind of music I like. Its not always a bullseye but like in the case of Amy Winehouse, I dont like the song so much but love her voice and I think there will be a song on her new CD that I will love.

Youtube is the bomb. While pulling up some old Janis Joplin clips, I came across the winner of Hungary’s megastar competition for 2006. Her name is Magdolna Ruzsa and she’s pretty damn good. Someone earlier mentions one of the guys could tackle “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, well here is a version I found at YouTube by an artist named Jimmy Barnes. I “discovered” him when I was in Austrailia back in the early 1990′s. He is/was the lead singer for one of Austrailia’s most famous rock bands Cold Chisel. He produced a cd as a solo artist that was Motown Music and I happen to love this cd. It contains a duet with John Farnam, another ledgend in the world of Austrailian music. The video is the actual cut on the cd set to a fan video comprised of various pictures. Give it a listen. The cd is titled “Soul Deep” and is available at Amazon.com

If anyone remembers when the Olympics were in Sydney and the opening ceremonies had the floats with famous Austrailians riding them…ie: Elle McPherson, Olivia Newton John, Greg Norman…well Mr. Jimmy Barnes was also on one of those floats. ( Just a bit of trivia for this slow Saturday afternoon!!)

Dave – Unfortunately Ms. Winehouse has missed a couple of her London shows for unknown reasons while being photographed partying at the time she was supposed to be on stage. Apparently she has a thang for alcohol and the white stuff. She not only sings the blues, she lives it. Lots of pics and blurbs about her on perezhilton.com. I hope she gets her shit together because I actually really like her.

I had heard about that Carla. She said no, no, no to Rehab. Heh.

I’ll buy a ticket off someone day of concert off of Craigslist or something. She is playing an intimate club(my fave place to see shows) that is real easy to stand right in front of the stage. I think this might be a must see spectacle.

Read the first page of the postings and just wanted to say the conjucture that Chris Sligh is the person Sundance was talking about thinking they had it tied up is just that conjuncture. I like Chris Sligh. I think he is a genuinely nice guy with a dry sense of humor that is great not to mention he has a wonderful rich tone to his voice and is the best male vocalist on Idol this year. I doubt he thinks he has it tied up though..he can see the way things are being said about all the females and how great they are and he is not an idiot. And while on the subject..if the best singer is a female belter type singer then I am all of them winning but it does bother me that Idol has picked a lot of one type of singers and given them almost no competition. And that we think these are truly the top 24 best singers they could find out of thousands…I dont believe it. They clearly have chosen what type singer they want to win this year…it is almost enough to make me vote for Sanjaya! Almost!
I do really like Melinda though and feel she may win and if she does I am ok with that!

Speaking of ***, RCAà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s now promoting her single Video on You Tube.
    _______________________

Let em promote.. I saw it and ONCE was enough for meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Totally pathetic IMHO..

Her video isn’t doing very well either – started off in #5 at TRL, went up to #1 and dropped to #8. They’re never going to recoup their money for this CD.

  • Metta

Hey Baxter! How’s the world’s best roommate doing?

Kat – Any sign of those skinny jeans yet?

Carolina – Thanks for the link to that vid. Sorry to hear he’s (still) sick. I’m sure the hometown crowd will cut him some slack, though. Plus he always gives 200% even when he’s feeling crappy, so the show should still be great.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Lisa, thanks for the Amy Winehouse article. You rock!!

Boulder, thanks for the photochop. LMFAO. You are priceless. Boulder is my friend.

Dave, so sorry you couldn’t get your ticket today. I’m sure you’ll be able to get one the day of. Much fun.

Caro, I think a lot of people interpret confidence as cockiness. However, Blake could be cocky. I don’t know, and truthfully, I don’t care.

I don’t think Blake thinks he has it ‘in the bag’ though. I think he could win, fo sho, and I hope he does, but he should know he has some tough competition against Melinda. The things I’ve been reading about him the past couple of days actually seem to all lead to the fact that he’s a normal, dorky, laid-back kinda guy (with a GREAT taste in music, lol).

Now, I have to go get ready. I’m going to see “Zodiac” tonight with my brother.

    RE: Fox 6 news Video:

Taylor Greets Fans in Homewood and gets Key to the City

I read from other boards that Taylor has an infected throat. How he sung all he did in Atlanta is a miracle.

He’ll probably be dead by the end of the concert tour if he keeps this up ( in a metaphorical sense ).

BTW, I heard that Taylor smokes… I hope he quits while it’s still early. Not good for your throat.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I think he is a genuinely nice guy with a dry sense of humor that is great not to mention he has a wonderful rich tone to his voice and is the best male vocalist on Idol this year.

I agree that he’s probably really nice and that his sense of humor is dry. I would agree that he’s kind of arrogant though because he really has been posturing a lot about his strategy. He’s been on several boards and blogs (including here) pimping his “Fro Patro.” I mean, I’m sure he’s a great guy and all, but it is possible that he thinks he’s the equivalent of some Idol grand master who’s got the show all figured out.

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll probably be dead by the end of the concert tour if he keeps this up ( in a metaphorical sense ) .

Well, at least that will put an end to Arista’s problems. Simon will make a snarky comment, Idol will have a reason to replace Taylor’s image during the Idol credits with Daughtry’s, and at least two posters on TWoP will gloat in Taylor’s thread about it.

Yeah, but who cares? It’s sexy. ;-)

Sarah – I saw Zodiac and thought it was very, very good. My husband found it overlong and a bit boring. I think the methodical nature of the storytelling was intentional. It captured the deliberate and, at times, frustrating nature of the original investigation. I appreciated David Fincher’s display of restraint here. Hard to believe that this is the style-over-substance director of Se7en.

Bax – JJ is being fed a home-cooked meal by her hubby as we speak. I’m going to try to liberate him when I get to NY.

Carla D, thanks for the link to the clip of the Hungarian Janis. I thought she was really good. And she rocked it out in a second language, I bet. I’d like to see some of the clowns on AI this year try singing in Hungarian.

Oooooh,Baxter (and all soul music lovers :) – do you use iTunes?

iTunes has Jimmy Barnes’ live “Soul Deeper – Live At The Basement”. It looks to be a combo of all the songs from Soul Deep (’91) and the Soul Deeper (2000) that I have.

I highly recommend the cut “When Something’s Wrong With My Baby” – you will download it if you have always loved that song!

  • colette

Hi — was ruminating about La Diva Diana’s songs & the AI folks — thanks for this list — As I mentioned on an earlier thread, Diana R. has a very limited vocal range — almost every Motown book says everybody on the label knew her voice was inferior in range and quality to Florence Ballard, and the songwriters just wrote around that.
But that’s water under the bridge….These songs can be upbeat & fizzy & funny, especially with those good backup gals. It won’t be show-off-the-tonsils night, but it could have a lot more zest than the show has displayed so far this year

Also, if Diana is at her glamly eccentric best, she’ll make Paula look like a catatonic….

    So here are my recommends:

    Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Hurry Love — group song

Stop! In the name of love — this is so campy it can be marvelous (with the right choreography, natch) — HALEY? JORDIN? One of the guys?

Love Child — GINA, punk it up!

Come See About Me — JORDIN, this would be a kick, a really teasy, flirty tune

You Keep Hanging On — STEPHANIE (give her a chance to keep it simple and focus)

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Going to Make you love me — CHRIS OR PHIL — gotta hit those hi notes

Back in My arms again — BRANDON

Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t No Mountain High ENough – LAKISHA! YES! YES!

This Old Heart of Mine — Great song of Smokey’s(??), MELINDA — she could kill with this

love hangover — kind of weird, from that nutty Motown-goes-psychedelic (or just psycho) phase — STEPHANIE

i will survive — LAKISHA, GO FOR IT GIRLFRIEND! MELINDA could also hit this one out of the park (or box, or whatever)

reach out and touch — a corny but hook-y Ashford/Simpson song not mentioned yet — they had an AI night, right? didn’t see it but that sticks in my head. LAKISHA could turn this into a soul spiritual. Maybe.

If they really let these folks do anything Ross has ever recorded, it’s a whole different ballgame of course. Then you get the Beatles in there, etc.

Meanwhile — notice I didn’t mention Blake? Or Chris? I’m not sure what in her discography would make sense for them……

  • maracaibo

Watching an award show and just had to post this as they just gave an award to Michael Jackson. He has sold 750 million albums/CD’s during the course of his career … 104 million sold of THRILLER.
    Is that astounding or what???

  • Masshole

ER, Debs correction. I meant Winehouse. I need food.

Ah, Michael Jackson. So proud. What a beacon. Long may he shine (far, far away…..).

  • madaboutu

emeraldgem…………I loved the Platters too. When one of my sons was in high school, he played basketball with Tony Williams son Brian. Tony was the lead singer of the Platters. I worked at the school, and was a member of the Booster Club and we used to feed the guys before games. Brian used to sing some of the songs his dad and the group made famous, and he was good and a great kid. Unfortunately, he got kind of strange after he got into the NBA, and died in a mysterious accident at sea, He had his dads musical talent too and I often wished he had gone into music instead of basketball. (Just got home from church where we sang happy birthday to a 98 year old gent who still comes four blocks to church using a walker. That means 8 blocks. He shamed us.)

People have been reporting that Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice is starting to fade (you can tell when he talks), but he still put in 110%.

Stacey posted on GC site that she called Brian Less (her husband) to find out how Taylor was. He said that he doesn’t have strep but caught a bug and does have a sore throat. 2 days rest will help alot.

Went to the Birmingham concert tonight… just got back to the hotel. I have a ticket to Workplay but need to leave for home very early tomorrow and we are losing an hour of sleep tonight ta boot, so I am heading to bed.

The concert tonight was fabulous! Encore: was the best I have seen so far with the drum core and Taylor sitting on a stool with just the piano and singing “Birmingham” very slow and tenderly. He got emotional during the chorus and the audience started singing. I think it was a moment where he was still and sitting on the stool, looking out at over 2000 standing people, taking in where he was, and realizing it was another dream fulfilled for him…you could just sense that he was thinking back to a year ago and how much had changed…and the emotion over took his voice. Without hesitation the audience filled in the void singing the chours giving Taylor time to gather himself. So you can imagine if I could get all that from where I was sitting which were in horrible seats 2 rows from the back of the theater on the main floor, what a powerful experience for the people who were up close and could see Taylor’s face. Another poignant moment we fans got to share with Taylor.

Well, it has been a wild three days for me. Nashville…Ryman, Atlanta…the most fabulous concert with 2600 people singing along and rocking the Tabernacle, and finally Birmingham…his home, where he is loved, and where he openly told everyone how much he loved them…very emotional night.

On the road again tomorrow for the last leg of this tour series…Leaving at 6:00 am Sunday for 10 hour drive back to Houston, TX.

    Claire out

  • madaboutu

Claire, I gotta hand it to you. You got the stamina for sure. And lots of memories. Good for you. Safe trip.

    Randy Newman
    Birmingham lyrics

    Verse
Got a wife, got a family
Earn my livin’ with my hand
    I’m a roller in a steel mill
    In downtown Birmingham
    My daddy was a barber
    And a most unsightly man
    He was born in Tuscaloosa
But he died right here in Birmingham

    CHORUS
    Birmingham, Birmingham
    The greatest city in Alabam’
You can travel ‘cross this entire land
But there’s no place like Birmingham

    Verse
    Wife’s named Mary
    But she’s called Marie
We live in a three room house
    With a pepper tree
I work all day in the factory
    That’s alright with me
    Got a big black dog
    Whose name is Dan
Lives in my backyard in Birmingham
He is the meanest dog in Alabam’
    Get ‘em Dan

    CHORUS
    Birmingham, Birmingham
    The greatest city in Alabam’
You can travel ‘cross this entire land
But there’s no place like Birmingham

Why is Dianna Ross coming out of her crypt ? Is she promoting something or is she just in need of some limelight ? Can’t stand the woman.

  • madaboutu

cricket……….Diana Ross has a new album. You will note that TV appearances precede a new album by anyone. Last year there were an abundance of older stars who made albums, like Bob Seeger, who hadn’t had an album in 11 years I think.

  • Botay

Claire it sounds like it was great. I was in Nashville too and loved every second of it. Taylor is such a sweetheart of a guy and I am sure being home made him feel emotional. I love that he cares about who he is and where he came from. Great guy!

I really don’t enjoy most of these people who are ” brought back to life” and are pimped on idol. I thought that last year Rod Stewart was fine but mostly I would prefer most of these fossils stay dormant. That Foster guy was downright creepy .Dianna Ross has never impressed me even in her prime . Perhaps Nigel should produce a show for all thses people trying to revive their dead careers. He could call it ” Night With the Living Dead” . :devil_tb:

BRANDON ROGERS: I think that the guys are getting a bad rap. No disrespect to any previous season, but I think that this is the best set of guys as a whole that have ever been on the show. I’m biased of course; I’m one of them.

LOL. You have to be kidding me. The season five group makes these guys look like rank amatuers. The 3rd and 4th best finishing male last season would be the standout male performer this year. It wouldn’t even be close.

I never liked this Brandon guy. Always thought he was very overrated and in love with himself. I don’t think he belongs in the top 12. I like him even less now after making such a ridiculous statement.
