Barracuda Performance Nixed From the Tour

Remember that trio for the tour David Cook mentioned in his EW Idolatry interview? It had Carly Smithson singing “Barracuda” with Jason Castro on drums and Cook on guitar.

Sounds pretty sweet, doesn’t it? Too bad! According to some Castro insiders on Idol Forums, the entire number has been pulled. Also, a request for a Brooke White/Jason Castro duet (Jason said on Larry King Live that he’d like to do a duet with Brooke) has been denied by TPTB.

There are lots of rumors swirling around about why the song was nixed. The prevalent feeling is that TPTB don’t want to bring “too much attention to certain Idols” at the expense of others. Who knows? One thing is for certain, some of the Dreadheads are kinda pissed and sending out emails to everyone they can think of. Whoops!

David Cook to play for the Wal-Mart shareholders on Friday

Like Idols before him (Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood), I’m hearing via the AI forums at TWOP, that David Cook will perform a private concert for Wal-Mart shareholders and associates on Friday. The concerts usually start around 11 am CT, and are streamed live on the Wal-Mart website.

I’ll post further details when I have them.

  • vixen

i’m so sad that my beautiful boyfriend has to shill for the evil empire that is wal-mart. that’s way worse than any magic rainbows.

of course, i’ll still be streaming that shit live. my half-ass principles, i show you them.

  • MrsCastro

Haha, Vixen, I was thinking the same thing..how funny is it that Cook has to play for walmart? I’m sure he’s going to be LOVING that .

  • blissful

I think his theater background will help with that Walmart performance, like it did for those cheesy AI group performances.

Major bummer about Barracuda…I was seriously thinking of attending just to see that.

  • Pam

Of all the stores in world why Wal-Mart? :laugh_tb: Oh well, my principles will go out the window too just to see Cookie. Heh!

  • AInoob

There are lots of rumors swirling around about why the song was nixed. The prevalent feeling is that TPTB donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to bring à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“too much attention to certain Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at the expense of others. Who knows? One thing is for certain, some of the Dreadheads are kinda pissed and sending out emails to everyone they can think of. Whoops!

I’m with the Dreadheads because that really sucks, I was hoping to hear fans recounting how that number went in concert. The idea had all kinds of awesomeness potential. And I wonder who the heck TPTB thought this act would be taking the attention from. I mean, wtf, they’re all going to be performing in the show so I don’t get it.

  • mocha

Disappointed if there is no Barracuda and no Jason/Brooke duet. He obviously was interested in doing one with her, as he confessed such on Larry King. Not sure that I believe TPTB didn’t want some Idols to outshine others. Isn’t that what the tour is about, milking these kids one last time for all they are worth? I would think they would want to highlight their talents and strengths. Maybe it was about fairness with regards to time on stage and where people exited the show. I don’t think anyone was mentioned dueting with Syesha, and she did finish 3rd and thus “earns” more stage time than everyone but Cook and Archie. And as was mentioned in the other thread, Jason and Brooke could have each given up a solo number to do the duet– which might not have been a bad idea, if they chose the right song it would have been a show-stopper.

  • spritely

my half-ass principles, i show you them.

lol! I can haz half-assed principles, too. (Sorry, Ceiling Cat. Amen.)
Walmart makes sense from a biz standpoint. They’ll sell a ton and a half of his music.

  • baxter

Let’s see one of the most successful AI winners, Carrie, did this and I dont think it hurt her or her reputation any. Hell most people have no clue that this event is even happening outside of those people that follow AI on-line. Yeah….I’m sure DC is REALLY gunna hate that paycheck that Walmart hands him as well. That’s just gotta suck….lol!!!

Walmart is one of the largest carriers of physical cd’s in this country and orders a SHIT LOAD of AI contestants albums. So the old adage of “Don’t Bite The Hand That Feeds You” certainly applies here.

  • mocha

Great post, baxter. I have been known to pick up a CD or two while wandering the aisles of Wal Mart. They do a good job of promoting all of the Idol cd’s, I remember seeing Mandisa’s cd prominently displayed last year. It makes perfect sense for him to perform for the shareholders, as they will be playing an important role in furthering his career. And you are right, only diehard Idol followers like us even know he is doing this gig.

  • aly

Ugh! First rainbows, not Walmart. Unfortunately people do here about this
kind of nonsense. This is what comes with winning. Unforunately David
is a Rocker guy, not Carrie Underwood.

Ridiculous about carly, david and jason not being able to to their song.
It probably has nothing to do with more attention shown to them.

Now nixing Brooke and Jason’s duet, that was a smart move. That just wouldn’t
hold up very well at a large concert. Maybe they will let Jason pick
    another female that would.

  • Layla

Walmart!!! Oh the hoops they are making him jump through! I’ll be glad when he has proven himself with a stellar first album and doesn’t have to do shit like this anymore! Guess it cannot be worse than some of the bar gigs he’s had to play….but damn…walmart?

  • mocha

Well, I don’t think DC will be standing in the middle of an actual Wal Mart singing. He will be at a shareholder’s meeting at some hotel or conference center type location, and the performance will be telecast on the website.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

No Jason shirtless drumming on “Barracuda”? Didn’t Chris Rich drum on the AI6 tour? Cake fans, please remind me — did that count as one of his solos or duets?

I was really looking forward to that bootleg video, but I am feeling better now about not buying tour tix. But I will be pissed on principle if this tour turns into the David, David, Carly and Johnsy Show.

  • baxter

Ummmm if I am remembering correctly, there are some REALLY big names that perform at the Walmart Conference on a yearly basis. This is not just for AI winners. I think Beyonce and JLO both performed in the last couple of years, so a great album and sales doesn’t mean that Cook would never do these kind of events in the future. It’s a quick and easy, not to mention very healthy paycheck for performers and they do it all the time.

  • mocha

Terrie, last year’s tour was a mishmash. Everyone got like one solo number to do, there were a lot of group numbers and some attempts to get Idols playing instruments, but it wasn’t too successful. Hence why they are supposedly going back to the old format of solos/duets/more stage time for those finishing higher. Hopefully it is not more stage time for those TPTB favor.

  • cheese

The WalMart thing is no big deal – a lot of big names do private corporate events. He’ll probably get to sing more than one song, too! I remember Taylor doing this event, but he had really cheesy canned music. Bring your guitar, DC!

The Barracuda rumor is strange, given that tour rehearsals haven’t even started yet. I’m sure that the set list isn’t set in stone at this point and there will be other changes as they see what works and what doesn’t. Judging by the reaction I saw at one board, you’d think that Jason had been relegated to shilling Coke at the concession stand or wearing the Pop Tart costume. I’m sure he’ll get to sing his three songs and do a duet, and possibly even do some drumming. (Disclaimer: I had no desire to hear Carly sing Barracuda).

  • Layla

Thanks for the comments enlightening me on the Walmart thingie..it’s just that when I originally heard (read) it, it just sounded sooooo cheesy!. Good to know that other big names have done it and it is apparently just a part of being in the industry.

Hate Walmart but wil compromise my principles and look forward to the live feed.

  • mocha

Judging by the reaction I saw at one board, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d think that Jason had been relegated to shilling Coke at the concession stand or wearing the Pop Tart costume.

Much word! The fangirlies had better get tougher skin, if JC is going to make it in the industry there will be many bumps along the way. Getting all upset over rumors that have no real basis is pointless, and sending irate emails to AI isn’t going to do anything but annoy. JC is relaxing in FLA this week; I doubt he is stressing over what songs he is going to sing so his fans need to chill out and wait and see what happens once rehearsals start.

  • primeminister

The denial of a Jason/Brooke duet certainly disappoints. Their styles compliment each other, plus they will be performing back-to-back if the performances are in order of elimination. I’m not the least bit surprised that the Dreadheads are calling this another attempt to OMG! THROW JASON UNDER! THE! BUS! Based on the rumors, TPTB don’t look particularly interested in making it seem otherwise. But mocha is right; it’s not the end of the world. It’s not like they’re making him sing September Morn, Memory, and Michelle for his tour set, heh.

But if Carly/Michael get the pimping they’re sure to get, I’ll be mighty pissed. Syesha isn’t my favorite, but based on principle, shouldn’t she get more stage time than Michael? I know, I know, 3 songs each…

Overshadowing does sound like a plausible explanation for the nixing of Baraccuda. My guess is that it would count as Carly’s song, but the audience would probably more interested in watching Cookie on the guitar and Jason on the drums.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Mocha, thanks for the info about AI6 and I agree about Jason’s fan boards.

This is not the first time that Sooner has posted something inflammatory before having a firm grasp on the facts, shall we say. No doubt she means well, but this kind of mass manipulation and collective overreaction will, however unfairly, reflect badly on Jason. In no time the DDB community will be as ostracized and trivialized as the Claymates.

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

Jason was just on his myspace and he had this to say about the playing drums stuff:

i had been talking about playing drums with a few contestants and the touring people but it doesnt look like it will be fitting into the set :( sad day!

It’s in the comments of his blog, which is nice and should make the dreadheads happy – he blogs (even though the boy can’t spell very well, lol)! ;)

  • skylight1219

Jason was sad that he can’t play the drums, but, from the sound of his blog, it was the contestant’s idea, not the tour directors. No where does he encourage anyone to sound the alarm and rally the troops. I got into some hot water on the DDB site, because I disagreed with Sooner on the emailing campaign.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

purps, Jason is at the beach with his girlfriend ~
    beer for eeeverynoonne!1!!@!!1 !

Have half of us gone nuts? DC should absolutely collect the rent from the Walmart Conference Center appearance. Bax is right, big names do it every year because they’re entertaining the peeps that do the ‘wholesale buying’ so that you too can buy his songs at Walmart.

    Someone needs to ban sooner.

Fans were all so giddy when DC and JC released the juicy details of the impending tour early on. In hindsight, not a good idea.

  • RemusL

Lots of big name artists do private concert functions for corporations. The artists get compensated very well for what they do. Most of the time, the general public never hears about these events.

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

Cookie’s Walmart appearance will serve him very well, I’m sure. It’s all part of the game. I say, go Cookie! I like you today. ;)

  • Thea

The fact that Celine or Carrie have done the Walmart thing does not make it any better. Yes, it might help his sales and his wallet. But yes, it hurts his rocker credibility. Big time. However, he got into the whole thing and he knew there were a number of things he would have no control on for at least a year….
Let’s just hope his album is not one of those (not completely anyway).
    Just my opinion…

  • Thea

PS: I will of course still try to catch the walmart gig, I hope someone will post it (might not be able to follow the stream). I wonder what songs he will do, aside from Magic Rainbow. It’s not the place/audience for anything edgy.

  • Jolene

Personally, I can’t wait for the Walmart concert. Are you kidding me? It’s another opportunity to see Cookie perform live! Rock credibility? Are we still beating that dead horse? He is the American Idol, whatever credibility that doesn’t ruin, this little Walmart event which most of the public will never get wind of, certainly won’t hurt further. Come on, DC sings about magic rainbows on your radio. A corporate concert he’s contractually obligated to do is hardly something to complain about, all things considered.
Also – here’s hoping we get at least 3 songs. I know I’m going to be tuning in and enjoying myself, whatever the concert might entail.
Wish I was a Walmart stockholder, that’s for sure.

  • Thea

As I said- he knew what he was getting himself into. Magic rainbows and walmart concerts are the necessary evil.
I cannot complain too much because it’s part of the same package that let us discover DC in the first place.
But I hope TPTB will try to tailor his whole schedule and marketing to him and his style a bit in the future.

  • dvls

I need to buy some Walmart stock! :money_mouth_tb:

  • lovegoodmusic

Glad to see that Cook is getting the exposure he needs to further his career. And once the Wal-Mart execs see and hear him perform they will make plans on promoting one of their best selling CDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Studio 19 is not taking a backseat when it comes to promoting Cook; instead they are promoting this powerhouse singer. Congratulations David Cook! :smile2_ee:

Geeze, I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait for Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first album to be released and there is still a long way to go.

Sorry to hear that Jason, Carly and David C will not be performing a duet together, oh well maybe some other time.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m also keeping my fingers crossed that Carly and David C will sing a duet together (I love Carlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice and she can sing rock), but I fear that will also be an unlikely scenario. Boo hoo!

  • RemusL

Ah, the mythical “rocker credibility” argument that gets trotted out usually by bands that haven’t been able to achieve success beyond local pub tours. The same disdain that artists once had for Idol disappeared once it became evident that by simply appearing on the show, they were able to acquire a host of new fans. Even allowing their songs to be used on the shows, regardless of whether the performances were good or bad, meant greater sales of the original music.

The name of the game is to expose one’s music to as wide an audience as possible. Potential fans can’t love you if they never get to hear you. Wal-Mart is simply another distribution medium. And if a corporation is willing to pay big bucks for an artist to give a private concert, one would be crazy to turn it down. Financial security allows an artist to create the type of music they want and at their own timetable.

  • Hoothere115

Oh no the did NOT pull Barracuda! They are going to hear from me…

  • psnax

Well, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think DC will be standing in the middle of an actual Wal Mart singing.

LOL!! Thanks for making me chuckle first thing in the morning! (Not that I would have any problem with DC standing in the middle of my local Wal Mart singing….) But seriously, to agree with many of the other posters, artists and celebrities of all kinds do corporate events all the time, it helps to keep them in the public eye. Hell, they even line up to play a short set to a few hundred people at 11pm on a Saturday night at the annual college balls at Oxford University, or give a 30 minute talk at the Oxford Union to several hundred people because it’s all a positive form of exposure. And positive exposure is what these people need to sustain their careers. So while Wal Mart may have a certain aura surrounding it, playing at a corporate event is not likely to harm a person’s career.

Not sure what to think on the Barracuda and Jason/Brooke duet. The former may be an issue of song rights, or possibly even timing of the show … and nothing to do with giving more time to certain performers. Not sure we’ll ever really know.

  • MrsTrep

Jason’s going to have to duet with Syesha to transition between performers if they’re following the S5 format, which should be interesting to say the least. Belter with indie, what the hell are they going to sing?

  • jersey

Mrs. Trep, I was thinking the same thing. That will be one weird combination. Jason is bound to get drowned out.

  • MrsTrep

They just said in the ‘showbiz buzz’ on my radio station that Archie’s mom said AI is fixed because there’s no way cookie beat her son. Losely quoted of course…..I’ll look for some source….and I found it and ya’ll probably have already heard it cuz it’s from MOnday….like I say below cuz I’m retarded

  • MrsTrep

it was from Monday…ya’ll probably already know.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Cookie as a door greeter??? Woo-hoo!!!

Seriously, I don’t care where he’s singing. I’d be there, front and center. And, I’d be willing to bet that there are some fangirlies in that shareholder/associate audience, too.

  • Chicago-sally

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so sad that my beautiful boyfriend has to shill for the evil empire

Private events pay very good money….it shows that 19E is working hard managing his career.
If you recall Whitney Houston did a private event years ago overseas for $1Mil and Jlo did Russia for 2.5Mil.

    Private events pay good.

  • hardkandy

Argghhh. They should have the Brooke-Jason duet at least. COME ON!

  • Allison

I was so looking forward to that Barracuda number. A real Idol ‘band’ — it would have been terrific. And a Jason/Brooke duet – I thought that would be a great pairing Before Jason said it.
    What gives?

  • RemusL

MrsTrep, I think you’re right. If this year’s concert format trots out the top 10 in the order of elimination, they may be reserving duets for the transitions between performers. If that’s the case, then we just might get that Brooke-Jason duet after all.

Personally, I think they should scrap the oder protocol except for the top 2. That way, they’re not boxed into strange duet combinations with voices that have little in common.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

I’m not sure what the problem is with doing a private concert for Walmart. I mean, I know some people are anti-Walmart, but I’m not sure that’s Cook’s base anyway. He probably won’t ‘have to do anything in this concert that he wouldn’t do in the Idols concert or in his various news show appearances, so no extra cheese witih it. And Walmart sells a LOT of music. Hell, Walmart is still carrying two Axium CDs for download. Cook is smart to do this concert.

Disappointed about Barracuda. The concept of that massively increased my interest in seeing the show.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I’m wondering if Cookie was supposed to leak that “Barracuda” thing. I seem to recall Carly doing an interview, and she mentioned collaborating with two other contestants on a song during the tour. She wouldn’t give names or any other info.

  • SpenserJ

I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get to see Jason play drums at all. And, I’ll be downright despondent if I don’t get my Brooke/Jason duet.

I hate Walmart, I hate everything about it and I don’t shop there. But, I definitely think that DC should take their big fat paycheck. The timing of Walmart’s annual shareholders conference is typically shortly after the end of the season. That’s why it works well for them to book the newest AI for their event.

  • Michelle

Bleh, Walmart…that’s corporate music for you.

I was wondering how long they’d get away with “Barracuda” :) (Not very!)

RemusL – Brooke will close the first half of the show and Jason will open the second half if they do it the same way they did S5. I can’t remember who closed the first half, but Daughtry opened the second half, dueted with Elliott, then Elliott went….but I digress. I also agree that they shouldn’t use exit order, but who knows. If they use exit order does that put Carly & MJ together? My memory is gone so I don’t remember the exit order….

  • Allison

Carly & Michael seem to have been thrown together a lot already. I wouldn’t mind hearing them duet again.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

In Season Five they didn’t do exit order. Mandisa opened and then dueted with Ace, who finished 7th. Maybe they just do exit order for the top 4? Not sure.

  • MrsTrep

pj -I believe on LKL it was stated that they would perform in exit order this year…. I could be wrong. In S5 they did the top 4 as the second half of the show and and 10-6 in the first half. It may have just worked out for the duets to do them in order for 4-1 because Elliott and Daughtry were awesome together. I don’t think E sang with Kat though. I could be wrong, she wasn’t there for the first show I went to. In S5 they did a girls song and a boys song. I am not thinking that’s a good idea this year. The boys don’t sound so hot together IMO.

  • vagabond

I’ve only been to one AI concert and that was way back in Season 2. They performed in exit order with a few group sets thrown into the mix. The concert was a lot of fun. I’m hoping that is the format this year too.

I’m sorry there will be no Barracuda, and even sorrier for no Jason/Brooke duet. Rumor was they were going to sing Lucky which is a duet with Jason Mraz and Callie Colbert (I am probably spelling her name wrong.) It’s on his latest CD and would be perfect for the two of them. But…….oh well……it’s still going to be great fun! :)

  • holeighannie

I don’t think it’s fair to lump all Dreadheads together and say they’re all overreacting…Sooner is one person and the scary boards don’t count on principle. Just sayin’.

I’m disappointed, as a Jason fan, but as a Carly fan as well. I think they should play to everyone’s strengths this year instead of force them into awkward group songs when we all know they sound like crap as a group. Jason Brooke would’ve been one of the best duets possible, but what do I know? lol.

  • lefty

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry there will be no Barracuda, and even sorrier for no Jason/Brooke duet. I was hoping they’d sing “Details in the Fabric” from the same CD – it’s a duet with James Morrison, but I think Brooke and Jason would have sounded terrific together on that song.

  • mocha

Some years they went in exit order on tour. Season 5 they mixed up 5-10, and put them so that the duets worked out better- Kellie with Bucky, Paris and Lisa, Ace and Mandisa (strange pair, but it worked). I would hope they might do that this year, they could put MJ and Carly together to close the 1st half. Can’t see why Brooke couldn’t always return in the second half to duet with Jason even if she is in the first half. I had been thinking the 2 of them could do Colbie Caillat’s Realize, with the guy’s part expanded a bit, great harmonies in that one.

  • vagabond

Colbie Caillat is who I meant dueting with Jason Mraz on Lucky….LOL….I wrote Callie Colbert, kind of a mixed up version of her name. (slaps forehead) At any rate it is a really beautiful song and Brooke and Jason would have done well on it.

Well…..(as Jason would say LOL)……nothing is written in stone yet, they haven’t even started rehearsing so we will see how it all comes together. It will be a good tour and we will all get to see our favorites so it’s all good. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

So, since it’s apparently unacceptable and devastating to Cook’s career for him to be performing at the Walmart shareholders meeting, what kind of corporate event would it be acceptable for him to perform at? I guess only something like Budweiser, right?

  • http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84731174 purplesmile

I was hoping theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Details in the Fabricà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from the same CD – ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a duet with James Morrison, but I think Brooke and Jason would have sounded terrific together on that song.

I love this song, too (Jason and James are my current top two fave artists), but I had never really considered Jason and Brooke doing it. Neither seems like the type to be pulling on threads, but maybe Brooke could use the “calm down, deep breaths” advice. Heh. ;)

  • Natasha

I’m bummed about Barracuda, and Jason and Brooke would have been great singing together. Jason and Syesha? Whoa, talk about a mismatch.

  • cheese

I’m reading that the WalMart meeting actually goes from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. CT, so anyone who tunes in at 11:00 will probably miss David’s performance. I really hope he brings his guitar and doesn’t have to deal with cheesy canned music.

  • Thea

Guys- the walmart thing is on and streaming. I think it’s jennifer hudson on right now. I hope i did not get here too late and the Cookie is still to come!!!

And now, Magic Rainbow– just him on guitar, mixing it up quite a bit. He’s making it his every time more, and now I am loving it!
