Marcus Canty “Used By You” Music Video Premier

Nice to see that Sony hasn’t given up on X Factor season 1 alum, Marcus Canty. Here is the music video for his third single, “Used by You.”

In it, Marcus is gonna help a “friend” get even with guy who is cheating on her. What a guy. Check it out below.

The video will also premiere later today on BET’s 106 & Park.

Never heard anything by or about the guy but the video looks solid, current and not too cheap. Overall I just get an Usher-lite vibe here because whatever that dude had going on in the video Usher could sing, dance and sell better. Anyhow, nice to see a solid effort.

LA must have a lot of hope in this guy.  He’s bumping up against Usher, Trey Songz and so many others.

I agree it’s nice to see they haven’t given up on him like the certain winner of the show but I digress. lol LA always had faith in Marcus and I can see Marcus fitting in well with the likes of Usher, Trey Songz, Miguel, etc. It might take a while but I think he’ll eventually get there.

Marcus is the only one of the XF S1 contestants who has consistently released solid, current, radio-friendly songs. His first couple singles at least charted, even if neither broke Top 20, and he does seem to still have his label’s support, which I’m not sure is the case with either Melanie or Chris R. His biggest problem may be that he doesn’t stand out from all the other Usher-lite type artists out there, but he definitely has potential to carve out a nice career for himself as a niche Urban/R&B artist.

Another pretty solid piece of work they’ve produced by/with Marcus. So glad they seem to be working to develop him. I, too, really think he’s going to develop a nice career for himself over time — he’s smart, talented, hard-working and realistic, as far as I can tell. And he’s really devoted to music.

Drove me nuts the way Simon always seemed to be kind of itching to get him off the show as he persisted at the end. Because I like his voice and his attitude, and I do think he has some X-Factor, too.  Go, Marcus. (does make me feel bad for Melanie, though — but what doesn’t. And I have to admit that I like Marcus better. heh)

Another good song and video. It seems that LA Reid is trying to “develop” him outside the bubble. He’ll probably be the XF alum who’ll last longer on Epic Records.

    This is good. I’m impressed.

ETA: What is going on with Chris Rene these days?

  • Jenny Williams

Exactly what I was thinking. I don’t think he left the show with many fans, but at the rate he’s going he might end up being season 1’s biggest success story.

Chris had a good run with Young Homie, but his EP was quite weak. The tunes aren’t  better even than his original songs. IMO, he was one of the most marketable contestants the show had, despite not being the best singer. However, for some reason, the label seems to have completely abandoned him. He didn’t sing on the live shows from S2 (a bummer considering he was the most hyped contestant from S1 and Simon declared him his “favorite contestant”). It seems that the XF label machine operates in a much more obscure and sordid way than the other shows.

Chris R. went out on a radio tour to support Young Homie, which was a modest hit (peaking in the mid-20s on CHR). But his 2nd single (which was co-written by an ex-Idol whose name I’m blanking on, the kid who ended up in that web series with a bunch of other wannabes in a fancy house as they pursued their careers) didn’t do well at and his EP (which came out in October) also failed to sell much. I haven’t heard whether he’s got any tour plans for this year or whether the label plans to give him a full album. He’s sort of disappeared in recent months. He did perform his 2nd single on the XF Pre-Show, but even that was weird, since they didn’t bring him back to sing on the actual show, like Melanie and Josh did. So who knows how much the label and his mgmt is really supporting him.
