Kris Allen and his band, dressed in Festive! Christmas! Sweaters! performed “Live Like We’re Dying” on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight (Dec 17).

Kris tweeted that they invited “Santa” to drum, but Dave said no. Boo!

Check out the performance,   after the JUMP…

Nice sweaters. I hope Letterman’s right about this being the first of many CDs.

hahaha those sweaters made me giggle! Awesomesauce! :D

  • http://twitter.com/dianeramos4real Diane

LOVED the Christmas sweaters!! And I love that Kris isn’t afraid to have a little fun!

“This is the first of many CD’s.” Yes!

  • season8fan

This is a great vocal and he proves the lyrics of the song by showing off his humor on TV!

  • Eileen99

I am still laughing my ass off at the sweaters. Never change, Kris. I see you being ~controversial. Great performance tonight – so tight. I thought it was the best live performance yet.

OMG those sweaters. I’m embarrassed for them. It’s like a bunch of dorky high school kids got together in the garage to play together. I just don’t get it.

  • http://twitter.com/dianeramos4real Diane

Oh yeah, Ryland was so “cute” looking with his sparkly hat! haha

  • idolprocrastinator

Sounded great to me! Kris and band seem to be getting more comfortable with every performance of this song. Hope this will give the single a bit of a push, maybe into ITunes Top 20).

As far as the outfits go, I loved them. I’m sure they’ll be some snarky articles in the media claiming Kris is bland and totally unhip, but Kris is smart and knows his demographics. The tweens and mom’s will love the cuteness of it all, and the college-age, 20 something crowd will appreciate the humor (who in that age range hasn’t been to an ugly Christmas sweater party?) I like that Kris and the band aren’t afraid to be their goofy selves and poke fun at their squeeky-clean image.

  • kt_cle

I watched the show, and have now watched the video twice. There’s something so funny to me about watching Chris Torres, with his long hair and usual swagger, rock out wearing the santa sweater.

Thought they sounded great, and I love how they don’t take themselves too seriously. Speaking of which, this was tweeted by Andrew earlier today:

on the way to charlotte, nc. playing at amos’ southend. long(er) set, so we may pull some hijinx -a.d

Should be interesting to follow tomorrow night.

  • deez

Kris and the band…cute as ever…the sound was little off, I think. (Plus it looked like they raided an elementary schoolteacher’s closet, lol!)

Nice job. Wish he’d gotten to talk! Will some of these people ever let the boy talk? Letterman is fairly unfunny, so it’s probably for the best.

  • jts323

cute…so glad he is getting props

  • sunnysider

Haha. Those guys are brave for wearing those sweaters on national tv. If you can look beyond the sweaters for long enough (hard I know), it was a really good performance. Both the band and Kris were on tonight!

They were just being silly, lol! It wasn’t meant to be serious .

  • Ratna12

That is absolutely adorkable. How can Kris sing with a straight face ?
It is such a serious song, but on the other hand it is like saying: Relax, just enjoy your life to the fullest, have fun, be happy, don’t worry about anything.

Yeah, I guess they were wearing the perfect sweaters.
    But, poor Cale. ;)

I think it’s called being funny. Or, as Adam might say, deliberately campy.

  • http://twitter.com/dianeramos4real Diane

Well, I for one loved it. It put a smile on my face.

  • leeaundra

I saw those sweaters and thought “reindeer jumper” from “Bridget Jones’ Diary”. Acceptable attire only in your mother’s house. I did laugh out loud.

  • dior

I guess Dave et al can’t believe Kris was the winner either? Boy did Dave flub that up. Anyway I’m sorry but Kris lost cool factor with those sweaters. What’s to get? Only that they aren’t cool.

  • Kirsten

Well, at least I can recognize what is on Kris’s shoulder. Anybody know what song the notes are for? Or are they just random? Like “Hello Kitty” English phrases.

The instruments were a bit over-powering, but it was a fun performance. The Jesus dude did not look happy in his sweater.

It’s like they are wearing their presents that Mrs. Weasely gave them. The Boy Who Lived Like He Was Dying.

Latin Jesus was in green because he’s Jesus. He must look different from the disciples, yeah! Thes guys are dorks and fans were dying on twitter. Lots of people get that it’s for fun lol!

  • sleepinin

    But, poor Cale.

But he had the best one! LMAO. The whole point of the ugly sweater is to have the ugliest one. :)

  • Q3

Nice to hear the band on backup and it was clearly a live performance because Kris changed up/messed up the lyrics — different every time they perform it.

I think it’s called being funny. Or, as Adam might say, deliberately campy.

Sorry but those Christmas sweaters are not campy. They are just Christmas sweaters.

No those Christmas sweaters may be nerdy but not “campy”.

And I cannot imagine Adam ever wearing one of those traditional Christmas sweaters. [Setting aside the fact that Adam is Jewish and too likely to don a Christmas sweater.]

  • kt_cle

The guy playing the keyboards ahd the worse sweater. It had a big x-mas tree on it.

Cale’s was definitely bad (so bad, it was good!). But I need a better look at Ryland’s (the drummer). In the quick looks I got, it appeared to be somewhat 3-D… I think I saw a big tree flapping around.

  • Q3

If Adam although he’s Jewish and his band wore christmas sweaters I would call him out as not being cool. Come on!

IDK. The sweater Jesus was wearing was pretty bad. And putting a Santa sweater on Jesus…IDK.

So, did they purposely search out the most hideous Christmas sweaters or were those the best they could find? I have a soft spot for Christmas sweaters.

  • Ratna12

I guess Dave et al can’t believe Kris was the winner either? Anyway I’m sorry but Kris lost cool factor with those sweaters.

I do think it worth noting that no one is to be considered a true artist unless he/she has mastered a musical instrument. I believe Kris plays at least two.

Yeah, he plays 4 instruments including ukulele and the viola.
Self taught on guitar and sang “Ain’t No Sunshine” on the keyboard in front of millions having been playing the piano only after one and half year.
That guy just has “NO” confidence nor “Cool factor” at all. Yeah, right .

    Reminder:

Can we stay on topic in this thread please? The subject is Kris. If you want to talk about the shit on Adam’s shoulder, there is a thread for that.

One of the guitars was off, but it was a good performance.

  • Kirsten

Sorry but those Christmas sweaters are not campy. They are just Christmas sweaters.

Urban dictionary ‘“ #1 definition of ‘camp’ :
Effeminate way of being Gay. One can be camp without being gay. Floppy wrists. Think Elton John and Jack from Will & Grace.

I think the person was refering to Webster’s second definition of the word.

2 a : something so outrageously artificial, affected, inappropriate, or out-of-date as to be considered amusing b : a style or mode of personal or creative expression that is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of high and popular culture <a movie that celebrates camp

The Urban Dictionary is really like wiki. It's user contributions and it is often missing detail or outright wrong. If it's not a recent slang word, Webster is typically a better bet.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I thought the Christmas sweaters were hilarious.

They sure didn’t put them on because they thought they looked good. Campy is the wrong word. Cheeky, maybe. It worked for me.

  • tierbee

OK, two giggles now… one for the adorkable sweaters, one for MJ. And if I’m this giggly… perhaps that means I am WAY too tired and oughta go to bed, lol.

  • idolprocrastinator

Cool is subjective. Both James Dean and Buddy Holly were and are considered cool. Kris was probably going more for the latter.

  • alaadam

I think I saw my mother wearing Kris’s sweater when we went shopping on black Friday! I’m serious! Going to look in her closet tomorrow just to see! I guess it was meant to be funny cause I have been LMAO all night! Kewl factor went way down on that one. I don’t remember much about the performance b/c we were “admiring” the sweaters! Oh and was Kris’s hair parted on the side? Campy does not equal nerdy!

  • tinydance

And it was subtle. At first I was like “huh”…then I started to laugh.

What was on Kris’s sweater? Was that supposed to be a keyboard across the top?

  • tinydance

He looked like he would be on QVC…lol

    Very clever.

  • sunnysider

This was a win-win all around, I think. The performance was really good. The sweaters show Kris’ dry sense of humor (not to mention his refreshing lack of taking himself too seriously). He’s of the generation that wears “Snuggies” ironically. I think his fans will get it.

  • girlygirl

Wearing the sweaters was a joke. It was supposed to be a “haha look at us” type thing. It obviously wasn’t meant to be taken seriously…the guys in the band are obviously similar in personality to Kris…more than willing to make some fun of themselves.

I thought they sounded really good. Kris’ album has moved up about 10 spots on iTunes since the show aired on the East Coast

  • tierbee

That wasn’t campy. It was just fricking funny. Embrace your inner geek, Kris & band. I am really starting to love these guys, lol.

  • Eileen99

I thought the Christmas sweaters were hilarious.

Exactly. It was meant to be one big EL OH EL. The @replies Kris & the band are getting are resoundingly in favor of the sweaters. Pretty funny stuff, and the contrast with Adam and the constant questions Kris gets about the AMA’s just makes it even funnier to me. Oh, man, and I didn’t think Kris could crack me up anymore than he already has.

  • tinydance

The keyboardist had the most “unique” looking sweater of them all.

He had a BIG X-Mas tree dead center of his sweater.

    LOL

  • vanjess38

I love Kris’ sweater/cardigan. The keyboard player is Cale and I’m shocked about the reactions here because the fans were really loving it on twitter and ontd_ai. I’m also sure folks at home will love that they put the Christmas fun into their performance.

LLWD! They sounded great!! (It was the first time I managed to see the performance live on TV and and despite being grateful to the existence of youtube the difference in the sound quality and therefore in what you get from the song is huge)

OMG! I have read all the tweets about surprises and festive costumes and Kris in a red cardigan but I didn’t expect that. LMAO! I love them and their dorkiness!! Who wins for the worst (er..best) sweater? Kris with the cardigan and the notes, Cale with the Christmas tree, Andrew with the reindeers, Chris with Santa or Ryland with his amazing sparkly hat? Seriously, I can’t pick the winner. Kris always shows his adorkable side via twitter now he showed it and on TV! Way to go!

ETA: I see many mentioning Cale’s sweater with the HUGE Christmas tree! He maybe the winner ;-) but they are all hilarious.

Urban dictionary ‘“ #1 definition of ‘camp’ :
Effeminate way of being Gay. One can be camp without being gay. Floppy wrists. Think Elton John and Jack from Will & Grace.

Wow, that is a really bad definition of camp. This is a good definition of camp (from Wikipedia):

Camp is an aesthetic sensibility wherein something is appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. The concept is closely related to kitsch, and campy things are described as being “campy” or “cheesy”.

I think that describes those sweaters, and how they wore them, pretty well!

You rock those Christmas sweaters Kris Allen & Band!

    I’d call them delightfully kitschy.

To me the matching cheeseball attire:
    - are a sign that the band is bonding
    - represent the ‘what’s truly important in life’ message of LLWD. It doesn’t matter what we’re wearing — we’re having fun playing music together on David Letterman!

    Embracing the uncool…is pretty cool.

I’m not sure they are really that popular, You might see one person in twenty wearing one of those things (and the other nineteen people are laughing) To add to your comparison: It’s like some people thinking Thomas Kinkade is a great artist, or that a certain series of books (which I won’t mention b/c I don’t want to get hurt) is literature.

  • wonderings

Perhaps you’re inspired to…decorate your own holiday sweater! http://kcaiholidaycard.com/

  • JohnM

    Kris is hilarious!

And yeah, the band sounded better tonight than in previous appearances I’ve seen.

  • Starr

For one, they are all dressed in Christmas sweaters. Even if you don’t think Christmas sweaters are funny, the fact that the entire band coordinated is pretty adorkable. Also, the fact that they were just playing like they weren’t wearing Christmas sweaters. Sometimes people will try to call attention to what they are wearing or trying to make fun of just so people get the hint, but it was funny because it seemed at first like you were in the Twilight zone and you’re like, “Wait, are they wearing Christmas sweaters?!” :D

Oh, man. ‘Tis a good month to be a Kris Allen fan. I feel so spoiled!

  • Triskel4

Someone asked why the sweaters were a joke; that person went on to say that lots of grandmas and moms would be wearing them and even indicated that stupid Chris Allon the douche must be making fun of poeple by doing that, at least that’s what I heard over this damn expresionless internet.
Actually, in my neck of the woods, grandmas and kindergarden teachers are the absolute only ones who would be caught dead in them, and the teachers are quite aware that they are hideous. It’s like they’re contractually obligated or something. Oh, and my colleged students wear them one week out of the year — generally finals week. They think that they are hilariously “campy” — yes, the call them campy. It’s the same idea as when they put plastic pink flamingos outside of their dorms. And yes they do have ugly Christmas parties and everyone tries to wear the really, really ugliest one.
So, the whole idea of it scews to a somewhat younger demographic I guess — high school and college age students (particularly boys I think) which sounds like a good group to jump on the KA bandwagon. Although this is the point where someone is sure to point out to me that that is the group which never bothers to actually buy CD’s. Maybe they’ll go to Kris’s concernts and wear his t-shirts instead. Or maybe Kris could come out with a line of ugly holiday swearters. I see some truly awful ones around Halloween.
Really, it was a joke. a hilarious one, IMO, and humor, like most things is very subjective. I’ll say this though, those boys kinda had some big ones to go out there and rock those granny sweaters. Kris wins I think — he had sparkly beads on his arms to go along with the musical notes on the shoulders.

  • vanjess38

Jesus in turtle neck. He should think of auctioning it after the appearance. I can imagine the number of people who would kill to get it!
When they started playing, my husband asked who they were. He was in the bed room all along so he didn’t even see the begining of the program. I suspect he was attracted by the sweaters they were wearing.
When I told him that it was the American idol winner and his band, he smiled and said he’ll love to hang out with them, haha. He loved the sweaters and he’s just 45.

  • girlygirl

Album has moved to #127 on iTunes — that’s up about 13 spots from earlier today

  • http://MJO judes

Wow, the guys did a great performance! I just love their sense of humour. I so hope they get to come to Australia – they would totally fit in- their humour – especially Kris’s is so much like Aussie humour. Its not obvious but very dry & snarky & takes the “mickey” out of something without appearing rude !!

I just love that more & more over the past few months , this side of Kris has become more obvious!! It is a very endearing quality!!

  • erinnthered

    Good performance. Great sweaters.

Dave and Paul really seemed to like them. Who knew? lol

  • May

Great performance, and I like how the camera focussed on the whole band. They have an energy that makes them very likeable and as someone mentioned earlier..the fact that they don’t take themselves seriosuly is also a big plus. That’s probably the main thing that’s getting Kris through what could have been a very rough post-idol year.

  • happygolucky

We had an office christmas party theme a couple years ago with an ugly sweaters theme. Not everyone participated though. Maybe this coming Christmas family get-together, we’ll try the same theme with the ugliest christmas sweater contest. All I have to do is point to this Letterman KA video so everyone knows what the theme is all about.

BTW, this was my favorite LLWD performance yet. The band was having so much fun.

  • summersnow

ROFL at Kris and his band rocking in their Xmas sweaters. I like that they dun take themselves seriously at times. This is what I call cool.

Love the convo between Letterman and the other guy at the beginning: “Holy cow, he won!” and “Finally, the winner!”

  • csprof

Those sweaters were totally unexpected, original, hilarious and IMO a brilliant move. Here is Kris and his new band performing on Letterman, which is a huge deal to them, and they show up in those. Were those women’s sweaters? Because I really cannot imagine either Cale’s or Chris T.’s being sold to men. Would it have worked if they weren’t such a good-looking group of guys? Not sure. And as someone said way up in the thread, the best part was how they performed the song straight as if this was what they wear every day. It was a memorable performance, and I bet they will get a lot more YouTube hits because of what they are wearing. Great job, and nice to see the band bonding.

  • Banished

So, how many of those sweaters were borrowed from their Moms? LOL? I love the sense of humor. Glad the song is doing well because of exposure..just wish they could expose some other ones now!!

  • astrogal

I think Kris wanted to copy the outfit Mayer wore for Ellen. Guy needs to get a brain of his own, seriously.

    Honestly though, I loved it.

  • ilovekrisallen39

Love the Sweaters, but loved the performance even more. And I fall more and more in love with LLWD every time Kris and his band sing it live. I really love the last couple of days with being so spoiled with Kris and we still have tonight and tomorrow, and then a few times next week to enjoy him. What time is the show tonight, does anyone know? And can’t wait until next week when we get to see the AOL session.

  • auntieaimee

LOL @ Kris alienating the Christmas sweater wearing grandma demographic.

  • washpd

And I cannot imagine Adam ever wearing one of those traditional Christmas sweaters. [Setting aside the fact that Adam is Jewish and too likely to don a Christmas sweater.]

Actually, some of Adam’s good friends throw an Ugly Christmas Sweater party every year, and Adam has definitely attended, and worn the ugly Christmas sweater! I’ve seen the pics! So, yes, Adam gets it.

I find it hilarious that some think Kris lost cool points with this. If anything, his cool points went waaaaaaaaaay up. The college student crowd would absolutely love this. Also hilarious? Those saying that the banter between Paula nd Dave as Dave was introducing Kris was about Dave not even knowing Kris was the winner b/c Adam was the true winner. LOL. Dave was just excited that his show finally got to have the winner on! You could hear Paul saying, “Finally! The winner!”

And yes, campy was the word I was going for, under its traditional definition, as someone else cited.

  • astrogal

Ryland does look like a Weasley’ ¦..

    He totally does!

  • http://doeeye.wordpress.com/ doeeye

I am still cracking up about the sweaters. Those boys…so funny, I wonder whose idea it was?

  • ilovekrisallen39

Yeah I don’t know why some people are thinking that they were making a crack about Kris winning Idol. They seemed really excited that Kris was there performing for them. I love Adam to pieces but some of his fans I just don’t get at all. And I would love to see Adam in a sweater like that. I think he’d really rock the sweater. Love that Kris and his band would wear stuff like that and be able to make fun of there self. And I saw alot of pretty kool twit’s about them and there sweaters.

  • savgal

I have two good-looking (IMHO) college-aged sons — one wouldn’t touch a Christmas sweater with a ten foot pole, the other who has the confidence to be Braveheart on Halloween would totally wear one in the same spirit Kris did. Looking at the musical notes on Kris’s sweater, I think it’s a real staff, if you count the top and bottom as lines, but don’t think it’s a real song. Now, if the notes (on R shoulder) were C B A G instead of D C B A (just lowered one step), it would have been “Joy to the World”. But def. think that sweater was Kimberly Allen’s :) .

  • jmom376

This was awesome! I love the performance and think the sweaters were a brilliant idea… It’s got people talking about him.. Kris and his band seem to be melding together so well.. I really like the fact that the band created their own twitter and we get to get a glimpse into their personalities. Lastly, I am extremely excited that I get to see them live tomorrow in Orlando. YAY!!!

We need a list somewhere that shows what words are exclusively for Adam (e.g., glitter, campy, etc..). That way us uneducated common folks don’t accidently mess up.. LOL..

  • SpenserJ

This seems like such a difficult song to sing live, and Kris pulls it off really well.

    Also, I love the sweaters!

  • washyourhands

Just when I think that I couldn’t love these guys anymore, they break out the ugly Christmas sweaters. LOL. But omg, how does Kris make a Xmas sweater sexy?! They sounded really good too.

  • jersey

I thought the sweaters were hilarious. Kris and the band sounded great. For those who think that guys who wear Christmas sweaters (because they don’t take themselves too seriously) aren’t “kewl”, I give you:

  • MaryS-NJ

Oh my gosh – I LOVE THESE GUYS! It was another good performance of that wordy song and these guys are the epitome of COOL – in a dork wrapping – lol!

  • http://krisallenonline.blogspot.com/ kizgold

They sounded great and I am so glad Kris got a band with the same quirky sense of humor. These sweaters topped even the leopard print snuggy lol You can now follow Kris’s band on twitter as well http://twitter.com/krisallenband

  • mimi

Kris and the band were so funny in the sweaters– loved it! I’m farily certain MOST viewers got the joke. Also, my tivo cut off just as Dave was coming over after they finished LLWD– did I miss any interesting banter?

  • Seeker

This was one of their best!! Amazing Energy! It’s baffling to me that this band got together in mid October, just two months!!! There’re so good together!
I agree with ppl who say Dave et Paul were not being snippy, their excitemant seem pretty genuine.
Right, the sweaters…. genius!! Again, I agree with ppl that the performance was even more awesome because none of them had a crooked smile or a smirk like, “Get it!” or “Look at wat I’m wearing!”
Also, imhobservation, Kris was not wearing a sweater, it was more of an oversized saggy-baggy cardigan! :P ! And he still looked hawt. (OK!How adorable was his hair!!!Gaaaah, Shallow me!! Die!!)
    Kris Allen & BHB FTW!!!

  • sallysimmons

I like Kris! I wasn’t his fan when the season ended particularly – my favorite was Matt – but I admit that he’s won me over with his musicality, his sense of humor and his quiet confidence.

How confident do you have to be to go on Letterman for your first time wearing a stupid sweater? That guy is just cool.

If Adam wore a traditional ‘Grandma gift’ Christmas sweater, I will be first in line saying ‘not cool’ .

But 1980s fingerless gloves and a painted-on tear is cool? Hee.

  • poporange

Good move with the sweasters for Kris Allan and the back-up band..Kris Allan does have that boy next door/17mag look which is a marketers dream.

The single find is ok..Realistically in Ai terms the cd is doing ok for a winner not great. Just hope Allan does fine w/ the cd or single and that it has legs.Face it there is a trend for most Contestants when the promo from AI/label slow down ..they fade a bit..almost like thier a fad and some move on..This is my observation and opinion ..

  • ilovekrisallen39

I just can’t quit watching this performance,I just loved it so much. Kris looks even more better looking with his hair like that. And so think that Andrew and Cale are so sexy and rocking there sweaters, know matter how there sweaters look.

  • babybelle32

The sweaters and the performance were both great. The thing that I love is that this totally looks like Kris’ band. Kris Allen would not have a band where it looks like it’s just him with four guys backing him up, these guys actually look and sound like a real group. From their first performance I noticed that they didn’t look like a manufactured group, and that they seemed to give off a vibe like they’d been together for years, and not just a few weeks. I think this is why so many of the directors and camera operators focus on the whole group when they are performing, which for some reason seems to just work.

  • hoosiermama

Also, my tivo cut off just as Dave was coming over after they finished LLWD’“ did I miss any interesting banter?

Only that Dave said, as he was holding up Kris’ cd, that this is the first of many cd’s!! YES!!

Love the sweaters! I wanted Kris to wear red so he’d stand out, and he did–yeah! But they all looked adorkable and sounded really tight. Good performance. I think Kris is more bouncy when he’s wearing his sneaks than when he’s wearing boots, fwiw. Me likey!

My daughter’s high school student council is sponsoring bad Christmas sweater day tomorrow. I’m sure I can find something appropriate in my closet for her to wear (*hangs head sheepishly!*)!

  • mimi

Thanks hoosiermama! LOVE that Dave said that!

  • ilovekrisallen39

Yeah it was just a fantastic performance all around. I’ll be back later was up late to watch this last night and had to get up earlier to get the kids up and ready for there school day, so only had about 3 hrs of sleep so am very tired. Plus later is his gig that his doing tonight so want to be wide awake for that. Someone on twitter said she’ll be at the show and having a feed so we can see this. And I know the band said they might have a few surprises since there set well be a little longer tonight.

  • BCU79

Today is Idol Day during Amazon’s 12 Days of Christmas sale. Kris’s cd (along with Adam’s and Allison’s) is on sale for $7.99. There is also a contest you can enter to win tickets to next year’s finale.

I loved the Letterman performance. Kris sounded great and the band continues to gel.

  • LaRue

The performance was great. Loved Paul Schaffer’s “Yay, the winner!” bit. And those sweaters FTMFW! I would so rock Cale’s. It had the biggest tree I’ve ever seen on an article of clothing. Good stuff all around for Kris and the band. LOVED IT!

  • gulfluv

This is so great! Great performance and, yes, Christmas sweaters FTW! I LOVE Ryland’s sparkly hat, too. I’ve gone from indifference to love with Ryland, and I think the hat helps, lol. These boys are so fun, I can’t wait to see what “hijinks” they come up with tonight.

  • dana

they were very good tonight, loved that performance!

And yay for Letterman with the cd in hand to say it’s the first of many … I got the biggest smile on my face :D

  • Eileen99

I am still laughing this morning, so much I forgot to even look at iTunes last night! And yes, the guys are still getting tons of fugly Christmas sweater love on twitter. I think I’ll be laughing all day….. LOL to whomever said Kris has just lost the Christmas sweater-wearing granny demographic!

  • nyc

How did this performance change the iTunes numbers?

  • washpd

Also, imhobservation, Kris was not wearing a sweater, it was more of an oversized saggy-baggy cardigan!

    A cardigan is a sweater. ;)

Still laughing about this the next morning.

  • anovich

I think Kris and the baqnd played this smart. I’m sure they know that the 20 somethings demographic are all into the Ugly Sweater Parties right now – and there they are on a national show, their first time on Letterman – rocking the ugly sweaters. I think it makes them easy to relate to in that they are keeping up with the common trends in their age bracket (we need to remember Kris is only 24, and oh, look – he’s doing what lots of other 24 year-old guys are doing right now).

Love the Dave comment about the first of many – seems to me that maybe he realizes what a talent this guy is.

  • dana

are those beads in the arms of kris’ cardigan? :)

ryland’s cap reminds me of justin bieber (the boy who wanted to beat him up). hehe. :p loved the glittery cap and sweater combination. heh.

This is very true lol! I was forced to go out and buy an ugly sweater for a party last weekend, and I know my friends would all find this funny.

But 1980s fingerless gloves and a painted-on tear is cool? Hee.

Haha this is very true too. I don’t know too many 20 somethings that find the fake emo 80s leather look to be appealing, but I am sure there are plenty of 12 year old girls squeeing about it while writing their bad poetry and shopping at hot topic.

  • maturin

Kris’ band is getting better and better. And they all looked adorable.

That LLWD song is damn, damn catchy –go little song go!

  • SashaB

This was a fun and great performance by Kris and his band. Love the matching Christmas jumpers. They look so damn happy. Great job.

  • Izzieq

That was hilarious. Loved the sweaters! It’s just good fun..and it got people talking and tweeting them about it too. And, hey they didn’t let Ryland play Santa…so Torres just wore Santa on his chest!

It was a great performance and good exposure for Kris as well. It’s nice to see them having a good time.

ETA: BTW it is so nice to see a Kris Allen thread first thing in the morning (for me anyway) and having so many comments already.

  • Truthiness

Love the sweaters, adorkable and obviously meant to look goofily, so it’s funny/cute. I’m all for it! And yes, as he was rocking the turtleneck and grandma sweater, Jesus wins for me.

Not my favourite performance of the song, but I think that’s more a function of the sound at Dave’s studio. It’s tone is a bit…hollow. And the ending wasn’t as good as I’ve heard it before, but minor things.

So did it give Kris a bump in album and single sales?

Random question, and haven’t read the rest of the thread yet to see if it was addressed, but why would Letterman say no to dressing like Santa? That seems pretty innocent to me. Not getting that at all.

ETA: LOL to Kris and Santa-gate ;-) Banned from performing with Santa in his band! WTH! Looks like Kris is stirring up the controversy now ;-) J/K

  • Truthiness

I did at first! But then I wanted to hear Dave and what he had to say (oh, and as a Dave fan for years, he often says “the first of many,” to most of his musical guests), so kept the sound on. But there is this whine/tone in his voice that especially at the beginning of this song that I’m not a fan of. I think I’ll go listen to a live CSA again to get it out of my ears.

    Still like the sweaters though.

interesting!! I feel very different regarding it. I love the beginning, it’s one of my favorite part. Over the time this song grew on me; at first there are others that i like much more than LLWD and when playing the cd, i would start at BWCU but not anymore :)

Considering the fact that Weezer did one night of their Letterman week with the whole band in Snuggies/Slankets with WEEZER embroidered on them, I think the Kris Allen Band and their ugly Christmas sweaters was exactly the right tone for this show.

So nice to see him looking happy and very pretty in the red sweater.

  • smartcookie

He’s at 28 overall and 14 in pop on iTunes for the single. We won’t know about any possible bump in sales anywhere else till next week.

  • SarahP

awww this is too cute for words, and i feel all christmassy and happy, though i live in a part of the world where christmas is not celebrated..

and is it wierd i find kris and his sweater kind of adorable-sexy?

  • nyc

We won’t know about any possible bump in sales anywhere else till next week

No, I mean the iTunes chart for album sales. That’s what always gets looked at and reported. I guess iTunes didn’t show any significant bump or it would have been posted.

  • ross

oh, and as a Dave fan for years, he often says ‘the first of many,’ to most of his musical guests

Wonder if he said it to Adam? ;) Anyhow, I hope he doesn’t say that to most of his musical guests. Just the ones who have a debut album out. Otherwise, “the first of many” wouldn’t make any sense. :)

And the sweater thing has gotten everyone talking so seems like it was a smart move by Kris & Co. without being controversial.

I guess so, but I doubt it was meant to be a smart move, just meant to entertain and amuse, which it did. :D

Well it’s actually done both – I would love to know who suggested this first – did it come from Kris himself, his PR team and I wonder what Jive thinks about this all.

nyc, LLWD did get a bump. I check Itunes before Letterman, and LLWD was at 28. I checked at like 1:30 a.m. or so, and it was at 24. This morning it was back up to 28. I guess everyone is still buying Christmas music, but it definitely got a little bump.

  • ross

I wonder what Jive thought about Britney shaving her head? My guess is they thought the swaeters were fun. I’m sure they have an opinion about everything, but I hope Christmas sweaters don’t represent a big deal to them.

Last night I checked the album and it was at 140 and this morning was at 127, so I don’t know if that is enough of a move to call it a bump, but I guess it got a small bump.

I know that all we can check is iTunes (well, Amazon, too, right?) but doesn’t iTunes represent a smallish percetage of album sales? How would we really know there was a bump in album sales until people have a chance to go out to stores this weekend and buy an album?

To be honest I can’t see one Letterman appearance increasing album sales in a huge way — but it seems most appearances by Kris do create bumps in his sales, whether it be single or album sales.

The thing is (I’ll probably have a hard time wording this), to me it’s more like: all the appearances have a cumulative effect, over time, to build Kris as an entertainer and artist with the public. I think his ability to entertain with music and even with humor creates a positive word of mouth, and so does his natural likeability. So many venues that have hosted him have tweeted positive things about him, for instance. If he can also surprise people and not let his performances get stale, even better. I’ve seen a lot of musical acts get ahead in the same way. I think it’s going to work for him.

I know that all we can check is iTunes (well, Amazon, too, right?) but doesn’t iTunes represent a smallish percetage of album sales? How would we really know there was a bump in album sales until people have a chance to go out to stores this weekend and buy an album?

    1) Yes, iTunes is a small percentage of album sales.

    2) We wouldn’t. We don’t really know if there was a small, huge or nonexistent uptick in single sales, either. Or if his sales went down. We can guess based on the rankings, but if the people ahead of him all got higher sales, too, based on the season and all the promo and sales going on right now for everybody, or if everybody went down, or various other scenarios, we’d have no way of knowing till the actual sales figures come out next week. Last week, it appeared that David Cook got a bump of about 2500 album sales from his appearance on Carrie’s special. We knew that as of yesterday. Not the day after his appearance.

  • smartcookie

As an example of how unreliable iTunes is as an album prognosticator, the last time I looked (sometime this morning), SuBo was sitting at #21 in album sales. Is there anybody who doesn’t know that her album is killing everybody else and is so overwhelmingly the #1 album right now that it ain’t funny? But on iTunes she’s #21.

  • ross

Thanks smartcookie, that’s all very interesting stuff.

Before I go back to work, here, I just want to say I have to disagree with Truthiness, I thought Kris sounded terrific on Letterman. I was very impressed by how he sounded, in fact. It was like buttah, to my ears.

Other than that, I like how they seem to have rocked up the arrangement a little. And I especially like how Kris seems to have smoothed out the vocal somehow so that it sounds much more like he’s bringing out a soulfulness and meaning in the melody and words I didn’t notice was there before. He’s done this with Heartless in the past, bringing more emotion and more vocal “smoothness” (I don’t know how else to put it) to the song over time. I love how he does that.
(Always is working on things, improving them.)

    Good point.

  • Truthiness

Wonder if he said it to Adam? Anyhow, I hope he doesn’t say that to most of his musical guests. Just the ones who have a debut album out. Otherwise, ‘the first of many’ wouldn’t make any sense

What does Adam have to do with this? I have been a fan of and watched Dave for many years, that’s the point. So yes, he says to a lot (note, I didn’t say all) of his musical guests “first of many,” for non-debuts (assuming he pays enough attention to remember to know it isn’t a debut CD). He may say, ‘their latest hit CD,’ even if their previous work hasn’t been a hit. In other words, typical talk show host-speak.

Though Dave has other things more unique to him, like, the Indiana thing being a way to his heart. And honestly something like those hokey sweaters is right up Dave’s alley. He loves that kind of humor, so good choice by Kris and his band. And yes, I’m sure it was a Kris choice, not just a Jive thing, and I think it was a smart and funny choice.

  • Eileen99

I think whatever Dave said about the CD is completely irrelevant and wouldn’t read a single thing into it. He could probably care less about album sales or promoting anyone’s career and has the same rote spiel(s) for everyone that’s on.

I do agree he probably loved the ridic sweaters. That is right up his alley, as Truthiness said.

  • anovich

Well look at how much we’re all going on about the sweaters – you have to think that people who watched Letterman last night and didn’t know much about Kris before are also talking about the sweaters – even if it’s just something like, “How ridiculous was that guy and his band last night who wore Christmas sweaters to perform on Letterman.” As I think we’ve all learned the past couple of weeks, all publicity can be a good thing, no matter what it is for. So if the ridiculous sweaters get people talking about Kris then it’s all good, IMO.

  • wonderings
  • BootStar

And I cannot imagine Adam ever wearing one of those traditional Christmas sweaters. [Setting aside the fact that Adam is Jewish and too likely to don a Christmas sweater.]

Oh, please. Plenty of secular Jews dig OTT Xmas kitsch. And I’m sure Adam could find something to his liking here. Or if he prefers how he looks in traditional Chanukah colors here.

Thought the sweaters were hilarious (did I see musical notes on Kris’s?), and it was a great performance. And I loved Paul saying, “Finally, the winner. Finally.” No kidding!

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the gossip mags ran a picture of Kris and the band in the opening pages of an upcoming issue as one of those “Bits & Pieces” blips. Is it front-cover news? No, of course not. But someone is going to mention it, I would almost bet on it.

For anyone interested in the next event: Kris performs tonight in Charlotte. I think he goes up on stage third just before Derulo, who is closing the show. Here are 9 photos of Kris “rocking around the Christmas tree”, OK, he is just sitting there for an interview, the “rocking” part will happen later at the venue (without the tree, I guess).

  • Truthiness

I thought the ‘Adam farted’ controversy was the silliest topic ever discussed here. But the ‘Christmas sweater’ controversy is getting very close to that for epic ridiculous. Unless people are being ironic and I’m not getting it.

I gather that it’s a good thing Kris wasn’t invited to sit down afterwards and evidently there are correct ways and baaaaad ways to sit. So guess it could be even sillier.

The KAB Ugly Christmas Sweaters have their first article!!!

Funny because I just read on one of my fave non-AI sites about someone being invited to an ugly xmas sweater party. Sounded like a great idea, so glad that Kris invited us all to his during this performance.

Sounds fine to me. The problem is people always check iTunes and Amazon befoe the idol’s appearances and then report every minimal move.(and point to failure or success depending on the rankings) In fact, last week the SYTYCD thread was updated hourly by changes in rank.

But if changes on iTunes and Amazon are irrelevant for Kris, then they are the same for every other idol and every past and upcoming appearance. I’ll be relieved that we don’t have to analyze every time a single or album moves 2 or 3 places.

Does anyone have a second to explain about “Santa” playing drums? Did Kris’ drummer want to dress as a Santa and the Letterman Show didn’t want him to? Why would that be a problem? Or, is that just a joke that they wanted to do that?

  • Eileen99

My musician son in college can’t stand anything Idol-related (too mainstream), but I know he’ll love the Letterman vid. He wore pink plaid pants & a ninja turtle costume top in a high school talent show one year while playing his electric guitar. It’s just what they do and love.

  • Eileen99

Bridget – I gather they really wanted Ryland to dress as Santa and were planning to. Both Kris & @krisallenband tweeted about having a special guest in the band. Later, Kris tweeted that the Letterman people scorned Santa.

  • bridget

Okay, well, that sort of makes them Grinches, I guess. The sweaters were fun, anyway.

thanks for the info (I don’t listen to Letterman often) even though you killed a little bit my buzz :p

Mltfan, I do watch Letterman quite often *and though I don’t recall how many first time artists are on the show*, I truly believe/feel David Letterman’s response and wording was not so typical. This is just from my own experience in watching his response to the musical guests. BUT, since I’m a fan I will allow that I’m reading into it. However, when I told my husband the response (also a Letterman viewer, but not last night) he seemed to think it was a very positive response as well.

ETA: I just got here and I’m reading over some comments about fanwarring, I hope I wasn’t responding to something that I shouldn’t, however, since the comment was still there I’m pretty sure I’m okay. ;)

Considering that a Letterman gig isn’t that easy to come by I would have thought that Kris and his band would have been a bit more professional in their dress and would have attempted to make a real good impression on an American audience that really didn’t know who they were.

Instead they came across as a bunch of frat boys singing at a college tavern and making fun of the idiocy of wearing Christmas themed clothing. And thank heavens cooler heads prevailed and the drummer wasn’t allowed to walk out on stage and make a fool of himself and Kris in a Santa suit.

As a first impression of his “brand” to a lot of people, I think Kris missed the mark with this one.

The people who tune in and watch Letterman have a similar sense of humor to Kris’. I think the most of the viewers probably “got it”. I doubt he would have done the same thing on a show that attracts a different audience with different expectations. Letterman viewers expect dry humor.

  • Giavonna

I was at the Letterman taping last night. This is what went down. Kris and the guys came out in their sweaters and me being a NYC-tuded person was horrified at first. I was like WTF with those dorky sweaters??? Then I figured Geeky-Christmas sweaters must = the New Black. (Did not know about Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties until this morning so I guess…wow COOL!) The guys all had their guitars except Kris and he was freaking out a little playing air guitar to Paul S & the band. Finally his guitar came out and he was visibly relieved. He started to play along with the band. (They were OK with that I think.) Then Dave announced them. I have to say that live the song sounded nothing like it sounded on TV or on YouTube. It was PERFECT ‘“ Kris and the band nailed it. My friend, who is not even a Kris fan yet, was impressed. Really, it was awesome and much better than the broadcast. He was as adorable as ever too. When they finished ‘“ I deflated – and then Dave came over and said what he said about the many CD’s. The cameras cut, the show was over, and Dave walked away. The guys hung around for a minute more ‘“ congrats all around to each other and then they walked off.

It was very cool to see Kris live again. I saw him at Huckabee, for the non-show at Bridgeport :( , and from the outside looking in for the GMA sound check at 6:00 a.m. a couple weeks ago (OMG! I am a Kris stalker!!!: ) Can’t wait until he tours – I’ll be there too.

I don’t think Kris and his band were “making fun” of anyone except themselves. In a tweet, Andrew called himself and Ryland “nerdy,” and it seems like all of the band members, including Kris, were good-naturedly embracing their inner nerds. The best part was that they “owned” what they were wearing–there was no smirking, no embarrassment, no attempt to explain what they were doing. I don’t see how it’s any different than Adam wearing his high-fashion shoulder decoration last night. In both cases, the performers wore something of questionable taste, and in both cases, they owned it. I’d say they’re both “fierce” for doing that.

ETA: Thanks for the recap, Giavonna! Good to know that Kris sounded so good in the studio!

  • mmk28

I think Kris did great. Personally, I don’t see any missed opportunities. I think he came across as a fun dude that can sing.. He is not everyone’s cup of tea and I think he gets it. So if he can’t please everyone, he might as well have fun in the process. I think I remember seeing somewhere that the DJ from the Orlando radio show that is sponsoring the jingle balls tomorrow night said they can wear a santa suit if they want too.. LOL.. I really hope they do it.

FM G – I thought the same thing at first but didn’t care after he started singing. I think the fun aspect of it is OK. And people are talking about it today so that’s good. I am not concerned. Kris needs to attract an older male & female audience who buys music. By older I don’t mean young executives on the rise, I mean college kids and young adults who still know how to have fun and love music. Let’s face it, that demographic still gets into stupid stuff and/or the outrageous. (Personally, I would have preferred a tight black tee or black tailored shirt paired with dark tight jeans and some cool boots – but that’s just me and my KA fantasy.)

The humor of the Christmas sweaters was soooo Lettermanesque, I would go so far as to speculate that Kris is a fan, and that it was partly a nod to his host.

I doubt the denying of the Santa Suit had anything to do with the silliness of it–I mean, c’mon Letterman is the guy who dropped watermelons off 5 story building just to watch them splat–he’s the king of kitschy, ironic humor.

  • vanjess38

Guys, I have no question about Susan Boyle. Watching TV guide Network now, I see why she’s selling big. American Idol should take a cue and stop manipulating their show and their winners or runner ups can make it big.

  • cookcricket

To me it’s interesting how the opinions vary here, from “WTH?” to “what Santa scorned?” and then to “Cool, the guy knows what he’s doing!”

I seem to remember someone saying, “…you can’t please everyone all of the time.” So I think the some/all and the all/some definitely applies here…and maybe just perhaps many right now, but can’t say for sure. Mileage ya’ know!

(Personally, I would have preferred a tight black tee or black tailored shirt paired with dark tight jeans and some cool boots ‘“ but that’s just me and my KA fantasy.)

As a first impression of his ‘brand’ to a lot of people, I think Kris missed the mark with this one.

To me this was branding them as cool, ironic, geek chic. Kind of Weezer like and definitely very Lettermen. Dave eats that kind of crap up with a spoon. Which is why I like Lettermen as I do too, and obviously so does Kris. So I think that Kris came off very well with doing a song that’s on the radio enough, it is a Top 40 hit, so it’s definitely getting spins, and they did a cute thing referencing xmas and did it in a deliberately cool/geeky way while doing so.

And I’m jellus now because no one I know is throwing and ugly xmas sweater part. *pouts*

  • mmk28

Would love to see sometime!! *Wondering*, has Kris ever worn boots?

Yes, during photoshoots, Elle magazine ;-) .OK, I know you mean while singing. I think he wore when he performed on SYTYCD. That’s why he wasn’t so bouncy as he was yesterday. That’s why: Sneakers FTW. JK, I like him in boots but I want him to feel comfortable while performing. Maybe they need to make special boots for Kris. He is picky after all.

They are now setting up for Kris. I can’t wait for The Truth and BWCU!!!

However, when I told my husband the response (also a Letterman viewer, but not last night) he seemed to think it was a very positive response as well.

cookcricket, just saw your comment. Thanks and it echoes my own perception of what happen. I tought then it was genuine words from letterman and not routine commentary.

Giavanna, THANKS for the letterman comments. I have no doubt he sounds much better than what is broadcasted. *note to self: don’t miss Kris on tour*. In the very good recorded videos, we can hear how very nice his voice is

Tess, the festive outfits are very appropriate a week from Christmas at a Letterman show. It was all fun and I heard that the ugly xmas party is a trend with the young crowd so it was also current. Great idea !

Instead they came across as a bunch of frat boys singing at a college tavern and making fun of the idiocy of wearing Christmas themed clothing.

I guess some people don’t remember how funny and even silly the Beatles were when they started out. Or the Rat Pack, weren’t they kind of like frat boys? What about Bing Crosby and his goofy radio and movie comedy with Bob Hope? And how about current bands like All Time Low? It doesn’t seem to me like having a sense of humor and being entertaining means you make a bad impression on people or that you can’t make great music.

  • Mtlfan

Kris, stop looking so hot and all will end.

cookcricket, I’m still up. anybody else on here? I’m backtracking a little…be back in a few.

Okay, I got lost in twitterworld. Looks like Kris got a lotta love from the guys tonight too…several tweets saying, i.e., “Kris should just close the show,” etc.

I guess no videos have surfaced yet. The girl who got the awesome vids in Philly got some vids tonight too…y’all probably already know that. I’m excited because hers were good! As for The Truth, it wasn’t my fav at the outset either, but it has really grown on me. Can’t see it as a single, but I do like it a lot.

As for the next single? My 19-year-old daughter got in for Christmas break tonight, and she had not heard the album. I told her I was gonna play 2 songs and for her to tell me which sounded most radio friendly. I played half of CSA first and then about 3 lines of AWM when she said “the first one.” So a teenager picks CSA. Interesting that she and I both like it. But she did say that AWM sounds like a happy-go-lucky kinda song (can you say summer single? jk).

  • hoosiermama

Just peeking in before bed…long day–8 hrs. driving, but I had my awesome KA cd to keep me company! The Truth is growing on me, I must say. Also listened to a Beatles hits cd–there are so many of their songs I’d LOVE for Kris to cover!! We Can Work it Out, Ticket to Ride, just for starters. Oh heck, he could do any Beatles song and I would flail!! :-)

And Ross, you can never use too many smilies! :-)

  • cookcricket

Sds like a long day hoosiermama. Looks like you’re saying g’night. I love the idea of Kris covering the Beatles!

I listened to the Beatles or a Beatle type band (not sure which, tbh) covering “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree” on utube and then looked up Kris’s version. I’m amazed at how Allenized Kris’s version is!

This told me, imo, that even though he’s influenced by the Beatles, he has his own different sound and that impressed me! *Honestly can’t believe how much I love this guy!*

  • cookcricket

Diane, yay to you’re daughter liking CSA. I’m just hoping for the ‘right’ next single.

G’night all, if anyone is here. LOL! Looking forward to the vids!!!

@hodgesmusic thanks man. I was up all night making that.

    hahaha

OMG LOL hahahahaha I love Kris. Too funny :D

I showed the YT video to my 18-year-old brother and he cracked up and was like, “Wait, they performed this on TV?” and I was like, “Yeah, on Letterman” and he smiled. I think Kris and his awesome band are really breaking ground on the young guy demographic, since their sense of humor is so dorky and awkward but funny and witty as well. I do agree with those who said that Letterman and Paul seemed to really like Kris. I mean, how can you not? I bet they got to talk before the show and Letterman probably dug the sweater idea hahaha :D

But there is this whine/tone in his voice that especially at the beginning of this song that I’m not a fan of. I think I’ll go listen to a live CSA again to get it out of my ears.

This is actually what I love about Kris, so to each his own, I guess. I think that’s a quirky side to Kris’s voice that I love. The video of “Is It Over” here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4COh0CI218 at the end, that “whine” or “hitch” in his voice or whatever you wanna call it, it really gets me. It’s a nice surprise, and I think it’s what makes Kris a little extra awesome.

    Tess
    12/17/2009 at 7:41 pm

Considering that a Letterman gig isn’t that easy to come by I would have thought that Kris and his band would have been a bit more professional in their dress and would have attempted to make a real good impression on an American audience that really didn’t know who they were.

Instead they came across as a bunch of frat boys singing at a college tavern and making fun of the idiocy of wearing Christmas themed clothing. And thank heavens cooler heads prevailed and the drummer wasn’t allowed to walk out on stage and make a fool of himself and Kris in a Santa suit.

As a first impression of his ‘brand’ to a lot of people, I think Kris missed the mark with this one.

To quote The Joker: “Why so serious?” It was all in good fun. Some things shouldn’t be taken seriously, and I think it was a festive idea and definitely something that fits in with Letterman’s style, so it didn’t seem out of place to me. Sorry you feel that way, though.

I was at the Letterman taping last night. This is what went down. Kris and the guys came out in their sweaters and me being a NYC-tuded person was horrified at first. I was like WTF with those dorky sweaters??? Then I figured Geeky-Christmas sweaters must = the New Black. (Did not know about Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties until this morning so I guess’ ¦wow COOL!) The guys all had their guitars except Kris and he was freaking out a little playing air guitar to Paul S & the band. When they finished ‘“ I deflated ‘“ and then Dave came over and said what he said about the many CD’s.

I am a Kris stalker!!!: ) Can’t wait until he tours ‘“ I’ll be there too.

Thanks for the recap, Giavonna! Lucky you were there! And it’s good to know they sounded even better live; that has always been Kris’s strong suit :)

Sorry for the double post, but I didn’t want to make a really long post to respond to the whole thread while I was gone LOL when I went to sleep last night it was at 100 and you guys sure hung out on this thread LOL

I’m so excited for the videos from tonight’s concert! “The Truth” and “Before We Come Undone” live! Woohoo! Kris got a lot of good feedback. One DJ was skeptical of him first and thought that his rendition of Heartless/Gangsta’s Paradise was an attempt to gain street cred, but as soon as Kris sung Man In The Mirror, the DJ was a fan! That really made me smile. I think it’s something Kris can be credited for; he has a tendency to change people’s minds about him (see: Lyndsey Parker interview with AINow.org), especially guys who tend to write him off because he’s the American Idol. It’s kind of ironic that the title of American Idol seems to be more of a negative than a positive for Kris. On the one hand he does get to record and get publicity as the winner, but on the other hand, so many people who belong to the demographic his music most resonates with don’t want to touch anything Idol-related with a ten-foot pole. So I think Kris has been handling himself really well, and kudos to Jive for being really smart with booking him on these small shows. It’s like a grassroots effort, building his album from the ground up with these small shows.

  • http://MJO judes

Thanks so much Giavonna , for telling us about your Letterman experience. Sounds great!!
Speaking of Kris on Letterman- I am soooo happy- this Letterman show was on here last night only a few hours after it was aired in the US!! This is the first time I’ve seen Kris perform on my TV since he was on AI!!!
Letterman’s humour is usually too US focussed for us , so we don’t always “get’ what he’s talking about but Kris’s humour I believe is universal – as its not forced its just who he is!!!
Waiting patiently for the videos. Sounds like they’ll be great!!

  • Starr

Video of Kris’s Charlotte, NC performance last night is up:

    Here is ‘Can’t Stay Away’ : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujifA9yZ-Hc

    My observations:

    1. Kris looks hot as hell
    2. That white T-shirt should be illegal
    3. Man boobs
    4. Try to survive once you’ve hit the 3:31 mark on that video.

And “Before We Come Undone” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNm56XDukRs

  • ilovekrisallen39

Oh my God That performances for CSA just wow. And Kris should always wear white teashirts. And I think Am going to need a shower after that video. I want CSA as next single if he does that kind of performance again.

  • Starr

    Here is “The Truth”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZw4jeVbsh4

The drums are a bit loud, but that is to be expected, since the video was taken in pretty close proximity to the stage. I personally think that there wasn’t a need for three guitars; I wish Cale would’ve played the keyboard on this one, because the piano parts really add to the song on the album. But this is the first time they have played it live; I think they will learn from it next time and possibly have Kris’s mic turned up louder to rise above the drums, or have Cale on keyboard to balance out the guitar. Still, I’m happy I get to see this song performed for the first time!

  • vanjess38

Now I get why Kris has been wearing shirts on his tees. He doesn’t want any trouble of being accused of killing anyone. Gah! those pecs…….. no more words!

I think Kris will play the piano on this song in future. I’m also sure they tried it out to see where they need to fix and I agree with you Starr. This is not a guitar song. That said, I don’t trust some camera sounds. This particular one didn’t have a good sound, not even on CSA. I think we’ll really the real feel when the radio station’s videos are posted.

  • J9BT

Wow – Starr, were you up all night? What a nice surprise to find these awesome videos this morning!

The sound quality isn’t the greatest, but it seems to me like Kris put on some great performances. Agree with all on the white T-shirt!

I love all three of these songs, especially “CSA” and “The Truth” – once the buying public starts to hear more of his singles I know his CD will sell more.

  • mmk28

Starr, TY for the videos! ITA with your observations on CSA!!!! What can I say, as much as I love seeing him with his guitar I’m REALLY glad that he doesn’t play it during that song.

For totally different reasons The Truth could be another song where Kris’ guitar isn’t necessary. I’m not talking about instrumentation (I’m no expert in these things) but the song is SO intense anf full of emotion that could be expressed even better without the guitar. (actually I’m having second thoughts on that, I like it that he is rocking out with the others during the instrumental parts, but maybe he could do it with an electric guitar and then Cale could be on the keybords. I really want him to play electric guitar in one song: if this isn’t the one and CSA can’t be for the reasons mentioned above then the only one that is more rocking is From the Ashes, but I don’t think he will do it live any time soon. I just want him to rock on the guitar as he did in Bright Lights on the Idol tour). However he still manages to express everything the song requires with his voice and his face (and I want to cry now, OK not really).
This song it’s definitely a difficult one for Kris (at the end of the song he seems a little exhausted vocally and emotionally) but it’s the first time they perform it and it will get better with practise (just remember how much he has improved in singing LLWD live after all these performances). Guys, next time tone down a little the drums, the bass or whatever, I want to hear Kris’ low notes clearly. Maybe it’s just that the person taking the video was in front of the speakers. We’ll see next time how it goes.
What made me really happy though was that people were singing along!! He definitely had some big fans in tha audience.

  • Banished

Sorry, not sure how to add people’s quotes, but Starr I got worried when you wrote this about the man boobs. Just checked it out, those are pecs, not man boobs, believe me!!!

And YAY Diane!!! That’s what I keep saying… CSA’s got universal appeal!!

Yeah the person that did the video’s were in the front row. The person also got the set list I think Cale gave it to him personally. Also the person got to hear the soundcheck earlier. I really loved CSA and an still teamCSA. The next song there suppose to for us to see from last night should be up soon. I think it’s suppose to be IIO.

    Yes, ilovekrisallen39 it’s IIO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RIrEmN5ep8&feature=channel

I love it live, it suits him vocally so much. OMG Andrew, Kris, Cale guitar action FTW! Maybe he can play electric guitar in this one but the song starts as acoustic, so no. It’s OK for now, I can live without Kris’ electric guitar since Andrew and Cale are amazing in that.

Yeah I just posted about that in The new thread that MJ put up. So freaking hot. I fall more and more in love with IIT the more he plays it live. I think as the more they play TT the better it well get. Buy damm Kris and that white teashirt,is something else. So freaking hot. Can’t wait to see what they do tonight.

OK, finally seeing videos from last night and am just about to keel over here. Let’s just first say that Kris was totally hot last night, the t-shirt, the moves, the new-found confidence…the whole damn package!! My gawd. Although I am not a huge “Truth” fan, I just loved it. Really great live and I think I liked it rocked up a bit. I am on the fence between CSA and BWCU for next single. Both great songs, and really good live. CSA shows a sexy side to Kris that is to die for, while BWCU really showcases his lower register and WOW. Am I making sense? I am deliriously happy with all these songs. But I have a love affair with AWM too.

Anyhow, thanks to the fans who video all of this. You guys totally rock.

Yep, from these videos I now definitely believe BWCU should b e the next single. Its super radio friendly, it has a slightly different tempo and feel to it than LLWD without being a “slow song” and it translates well to live performance. I can see this being performed on talkshows too as well as intimate settings.
