Robin Gibb Dissed ‘American Idol’ – He was firmly dismissive about the contribution of reality television like American Idol, although he performed on its stage a few months later and, on this season’s finale, the show’s young contestants sang his hits in tribute. “This is gladiator television that’s not really about talent so much as television ratings,” he said. “And of course whoever wins is going to have a big album.” He went on to say how most of the kids on the show were “straight out of the shopping mall.” “I am frustrated,” he replied. “It creates the idea that the industry is being controlled by people like these judges. They are the soothsayers, they are the kingpins, and it’s all governed by these three or four people. That message is going out to millions of viewers because of the popularity of the show. There’s a feeling of intimidation. Truly talented composers think they can’t get past these people. Real artists get put off because they think that’s how the industry is run and they get frightened.” – Read more at The Daily Beast

The week the top 13 was chosen, he told us about his favorite season of the series: “I watched season 10 the most because of Casey [Abrams]. He brought something different and he kept me interested. I really liked that and that’s what I want to do this year.” ”

Stars arrive for Foster gala – Michael Johns, the Australian singer of American Idol fame, seemed equally smitten. “This reminds me a bit of my hometown, Perth — the clean air, the beautiful boats and buildings, this glorious Empress,” said Johns, who was pumped about getting asked to sing Rick Hansen’s theme song, Man in Motion, at tonight’s Miracle Concert. “David said he never gets to perform it because he can’t find good rock singers,” said the dashing singer, who performed an acoustic version for the Hansen biopic Heart of the Dragon, and met Hansen for the first time Friday. “David calls it his ‘rock song.’ I like that.” – Read more at TimesColonist

Paula Abdul Offers X Factor Advice for “Very Sweet” Britney Spears and Demi Lovato – “Live television is just that,” Abdul told us at last night’s Lupus L.A. Orange Ball at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. “You have to go with the flow, speak your mind, and just remember millions of people are watching. “I think they’re going to be fantastic,” Abdul said about Spears and Lovato as judges on the show. She added that Spears seems “lovely” and “very sweet,” adding, “Demi seems sweet as well.” When we asked if she’ll watch this season of The X Factor, the 49-year-old said, “I’m a fan. I’m a fan of all of these shows. My humble beginnings have always been mentoring and helping other people.” – Read more at EOnline

I couldn’t agree more. As far as modern rock & metal vocalists go James is one of the very best. I hope James goes in GnR, AC/DC, Zeppelin, Metallica, early Aerosmith kinda of direction by creating hard rock music that borders on and crosses over into metal, sorta play jump rope with the line that divides the 2 genres. This is gives him lots of creativity for sound and content and ample opportunities to show off all the aspects of his voice.

Adam’s concert at Six Flags was fantastic.  Javier and Jermaine were great too (really good voices).  It was a big crowd and clearly they were there for Adam.  He received such an enthusiastic response.  The crowd was quite mixed as far as age range too.  It was nice to see the diversity.  Never Close Our Eyes and Naked Love got a huge reception.  Cuckoo too. Really all the songs did, but if I had to pick two I would say NCOE and NL.

Adam looked adorable in his shorts.  It was nice to see a little skin.  He’s usually covered up in seven layers.  LOL

I find it interesting that Joe Ricatelli and another RCA person have been traveling with Adam for the radio tour. Maybe they are trying to gauge crowd reaction to certain songs to help select the next single. One of the PLJ DJs said the other day that he had spoken to Ricatelli who said they are going to really work the album because they feel there are a lot of singles on it.

If Adam can get radio play, I feel optimistic that Trespassing will do well. Fingers crossed that with NCOE going for CHR adds this week, some of the big boys will jump on board. Z100, I’m looking at you.

You described my preferable direction for James to an absolute tee. Would be beyond thrilled if he meshed all those bands into his sound.

And I loved your description of playing jump rope between hardrock and metal–that is how I like my rock the best.

Since Cook is no longer with RCA/Sony, I don’t know if he would be certified even if he did sell enough.  Guess we number nerds will never know for sure. Lambert hasn’t been certified in the US either.  Crush hasn’t been certified.  Doesn’t mean a thing.

    Reminder:

The headlines thread is NOT the place for numbers discussion! The discussion has turned into an excuse to fan war, so I’m going to stop it right here.

Whoa! Are inferring that AI fans actually partake in fan wars? Nonsense I say! :)

i think that is correct that outside of Japan music sales in Asia don’t amount to much due to rampant piracy.  The money is made in touring and endorsement.  And there apparently is a LOT of money to be made in that regard.

  • Anonymous

Maybe we can call Voice phenomenon BGBH(black guy with bald head). I agree with you about how bad music piracy is in Asia, but touring there is really profitable.

Oh yes, that’s a good point. I forgot he’d been dropped. So they may not bother. Of course Archie was dropped too, and they still got his stuff certified, so I wouldn’t count out the possibility. But I agree we won’t be able to say for sure.

Last comment about certifications/sales (and then I promise not to speak on it any further, mj). The US is one of the few countries in the world where sales numbers are readily available to the public. Thus actual certification is less important, because anyone interested can go check the numbers for themselves. In most other countries sales numbers are very hard to come by, and certification is often the only way for the public to get an inkling of sales. Therefore, I think, labels are more likely to get anything qualified certified internationally, because it’s major bragging rights.

ETA: No disrespect intended, but they all do look similar!

lol  Cook doesn’t have the same following in Manila.  David Archuleta’s songs are chart topping on radio all over Asia.  But that doesn’t mean Cook can’t test the waters and see what comes out of it :)

  • djafan

SonyAsia and Ivory music continue to support and promote David A even in his absence.  David A accepting to endorse Bench was a great move IMO.  His face is on billboards, malls, commercials.  Forevermore single from Forevermore CD continues to chart at #1 after a month of it’s release.  A second single and video rumored to be Rainbow may be the next release.  Songs from David A’s The Other Side Of Down continue to be played on radio in Asia.  The mini series Nandito Ako in which David A is the lead actor is scheduled to air in the US this June.  And a US album BEGIN. is scheduled for release on August 7th.

It’s great for Archie that he’s really popular in Asia and that his career is clearly big over there.

I don’t believe Cook has anywhere near the same support in Asia and am certainly not expecting him to appear in a soap opera, or whatever it is.

Alas, the fact that he might go over there and play for however many fans he does have is inevitably going to be sucked into some inane continuing fanwar. Sigh.

That took him out of commission for four years?

My recollection is that Cook went to Manila in May 2009, only two weeks AFTER his brother passed away.  I recall that some Filipino fans were worried at the time that he would drop out, but he reassured them once he got there that missing the show was never a consideration.  (Though I do recall some Filipino fans complaining at the time about Cook not smiling very much or being somewhat aloof, which, given what he was going through at the time of the trip to Manila, were I thought kind of mindblowing complaints to be making.  Made me realize how I would never want to be a celeb — you have to be always on, or you’re apparently standoffish or not very nice.)

Following that, he and his band continued to  tour until the end of November 2009, and was working on his album in 2010, which wasn’t released until June 2011.  Really, he didn’t have any new music to promote until mid-2011 and he toured primarily in the U.S. in late 2011.  I think that the parting with RCA et al probably took place in early spring as they were still talking about promoting him in Japan in January 2012, but then after that, it was silence.

But honestly, I don’t know where four years in your comment came from.

Just wanted to say that HK isn’t as big on pirated cd’s as other parts of Asia, there are one on 2 stalls in the markets, but its really not that abundant. However we do have several HMV stores, and HK Records (another music and video store) that do good business. The pirated films/music are generally not very good quality, and because HK doesn’t have the same restrictions as China its easier and better to buy genuine cds. BUT saying that I’m sure that most teens download from the computer and do not buy either real or pirated music….

  • http://twitter.com/thePeachMango Peach Mango

Well, from the artists’ point of view, there’s no real difference between a listener buying pirated music vs. a listener downloading songs on their computers.  The end effect is the same:  the artist doesn’t get paid for their  music.

David Cook does get some airplay in Asia.  Not only the Phillipines. They did release TLM in Japan, and I’ve heard that Hard To Believe was released as a single in Indonesia, and is doing well. He also did a show in Vietnam a couple of years ago.  It’s good if he gets to do more shows there.

  • Anonymous

Didn’t say there was, just wanted to point out that not all parts of Asia are full of pirated goods on every street corner…and that teens are the same the world over, and download free off the internet.

  • mmb

i think its fantastic if David can go tour in the phillipines, indonesia etc.  This is a tough , tough business but its a big world.  If you can make money in Asia, go to Asia; if your efforts are better spent in south america, go there; if you will do best at home, stay there.  There have always been american artists (both from idol and not) who have done better abroad than in the US — look at the Scissor Sisters , huge in the UK, but never as big in the US, or Lana Del Rey, she has done incredibly well outside the us but gets little radio play in the US, the UK seems to love her.  I could go on and on with more examples and include Idol alums as well.  Glad to see David taking the bull by the horns and pressing forward.
