Coldplay to Perform on American Idol next week: American Idol tweets, “Breaking news! @Coldplay will be performing on #idol next Thursday, May 3rd! What is your favorite Coldplay song?”

‘American Idol’ Scrambling To Find Substitute For Ailing Host Ryan Seacrest – I hear they tried to get Cat Deeley, host of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, to sub for him, with Lythgoe also on standby. – Deadline

‘Idol’ bits: another talk with Phillip Phillips; my Power 6; Justin Guarini’s play performance – Phillips said his kidney stones (and stent) are causing regular discomfort, with some days better than others. He acknowledged he tries to get as much rest as possible and bowed out of the Ford commercial last week. (”This boy here likes to sleep,” he said.) How was yesterday, when I spoke to him? “Today is alright.” His take on singing Queen: “I do like Queen. Singing wise, it’s kind of strange. It’s a kind of strange week. Hopefully, I picked the right songs.” The free choice song, he promises, “is going to be different.” – Read more at the Atlanta Journal Constitution

American Idol Backstage Scoop: Is Someone Really Sick or Just Crying Wolf? – We were lucky enough to be seated right next to Brian during the show, who seemed impressed by the first round of the singers covering Queen songs, but it was obvious he favored Elise Testone. Her cover of “I Want It All” was the only one that had him tapping his toes, smiling and swaying back and forth. Wow! Talk about a compliment! Phillip confirmed the videos were more for show and really hold no honest meaning behind them. “They put us in a room and said, ‘Talk bad about one another,’” he spilled. “It’s nothing serious. We’re all close. We have no hard feelings for one another. I have been sick. I’m not acting sick. It’s been a past rough few weeks so I’m pushing through it.” – Read more at EOnline

‘American Idol’ Celebrates Queen, A Sick Ryan Seacrest Rallies: What You Didn’t See on TV – 1. Ryan Seacrest’s first order of business upon hitting the Idol stage: a bottle of water, delivered promptly by stylist Miles Siggins. For the first half of the show, Ryan did look a little peaked and moved a little slower, with stage manager Debbie taking him by the hand from mark to mark. Lots of hugs, even an ice pack made its way over to the host during the show’s early minutes. But as Queen (and Skylar Laine) declared in song: the show must go on. And so it did. 17. Katy Perry pretaped her Thursday night performance of “Part of Me” with full military regalia. Perhaps taking her battalion shtick a bit too far, the 500-plus audience members let out a collective gasp when one of her dancers, who was rappelling from up above, hit her head on the descent. Ouch. – Read more at the Hollywood Reporter

American Idol’s Top 6 Make Queen the King of the Night

Prosecutors show photos of Hudson’s slain nephew – CHICAGO (AP) — The otherwise blank-faced defendant accused of killing Jennifer Hudson’s family appeared to cry at his trial Wednesday when prosecutors projected photographs onto a large screen of the bloodied body of the youngest victim — Oscar winner’s 7-year-old nephew. Wearing mostly black and with her long hair down over her shoulders, Hudson spent much of the morning outside the courtroom as prosecutors showed the photographs of Julian. Her sister, Julia Hudson, who is Julian’s mother, also stayed out of the room. The sisters walked into court after prosecutors were done showing the photos. – Read more at the Associated Press

Carrie Underwood, Hockey Playoffs: Singer Talks NHL Dreams & Zamboni Nightmares – “They need to make the puck neon pink, because I’m having a hard time watching TV and following it,” Carrie Underwood told Chicago’s US99 radio station back in April of 2009, when asked about watching her then-boyfriend Mike Fisher play for the Ottawa Senators. Fast forward three years, and the country superstar is married to Mike (who’s now a Nashville Predator) and has become somewhat of a hockey expert! – The Boot

James Durbin wants ‘American Idol’ to embrace heavy metal – “‘American Idol’ is really unsure about rock,” says Durbin, a finalist a year ago who lit up the stage, literally and figuratively, with his forays into heavy metal. “You have to assure them they need to love it and to give it a chance.” Durbin says he wanted to make the rock subgenre mainstream again. “When people think of metal now, they think of that Slayer stuff,” he says. “That’s not what it is. It’s melodic, it’s beautiful, it’s what’s in your dreams. It’s magic and it’s mystic.” – Read more at St Louis Today

American Idol Feud: Simon Cowell ‘Can’t Stand’ JLO – n his new biography, Simon Cowell unashamedly says what he really thinks about the Puerto Rican diva, the New York Daily News is reporting. “I’ve never met her” Cowell says in his book. “But I can’t stand her.” Ouch! Lopez made a mark on “American Idol” last year when she set a new tone on the singing competition. While Cowell was on the show, he was the surly, brutally honest and sometimes rude judge that contestants feared.- Read more at Latino.Fox.com

LOL. A+ tweet exchange between Adam and Jimmy Kimmel regarding the Kimmel show tonight:

    adamlambert
So excited to perform on @jimmykimmel tomorrow…er tonight. Thats my cue to get to sleep. See you all onstage! :)

    jimmykimmel
@adamlambert yes – GO TO SLEEP! (I am very demanding)

  • AllenTX

I wonder which song Coldplay is going to play. Paradise already peaked, and they’re pushing Princess of China with Rihanna now, but Rihanna is not performing, is she?

  • AllenTX

Oh Durbin, lol, STFU about giving metal a chance already. If your album is heavy metal, I’m the king of England.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

Hmm, I wonder if a Coldplay theme might be on the horizon for the Top 5?  I would not hate that.

  • Anonymous

I can’t wait to see Adam perform on Jimmy’s show tonight, it’s going to be great.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

Oh James, I wish there was more metal on Idol too, it would be soooooooo much more entertaining if there was. But unfortunately not everyone has the voice to do it justice like you. But would it be too much to ask to do an 80s hair metal week just once Nigel?

  • Nele621

Atlanta article on Phillip: “He’s not a deep thinker,” which means, what? Not too bright?

ooohhh…I wonder what Adam will sing tonight on Jimmy Kimmel?  I am so excited about his new songs!  I have already played the snippets to death;can’t wait to get the cd!

From NBC Philadelphia Entertainment’s section: Singer Taylor Hicks has been getting a lot of compliments lately… wonder why?

Ballys Las Vegas is getting a makeover just in time for Taylor Hick’s run starting on June 26.  “A retractable soundproofing curtain, new lights and a stage extension will create “a first-class little showroom” in time for Hicks’ eight-week run, says Carlos Reynoso, who oversees entertainment for Caesars Entertainment.”

I liked James a whole lot last year. He’s a great rock singer and was entertaining but uh yeah AI got along just fine without heavy metal before and I continue to enjoy it now even without. If you cant sing heavy metal why should it be pushed on these contestants?  Give me kick ass singing and that entertains me.

    Anxious to see Adam tonight!

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Not super exciting, but if you go to the Kohls website, they have videos of the Top 10 doing some sort of photoshoot for an AI inspired line of clothing where they all talk about their personal styles and what not.

If Ryan cant make I would bring Steve Jones (?) from X-Factor as the host … it would be epic …

  • Kirsten

“I’ve never met her” Cowell says in his book. “But I can’t stand her.”

    Sour grapes?

JLo confirmed last year that she had been approached by X-Factor to judge that show, but picked Idol instead. In the end, she and Steven helped to re-energize a franchise that looked doomed after Cowell left (and seemingly sabotaged Season 9).  Meanwhile, X-Factor had to settle for his old pal Paula (making X-Factor look like a tired Idol clone with two ex-Idol judges on the panel) and the girl he originally cast as a co-host. JLo’s career rebounded due to her Idol connection, while Nicole’s foundered.

Does he give any excuse for hating her?

I am boarding a flight in about 2 hours to wing my way to Hollywood and Highland to listen to some new songs off Trespassing! Don’t disappoint us Adam. Play at least 4-9 songs… pretty please.

  • justmefornow

I liked your post, but on second thought, no.
I don’t want to hear songs butchered by singers with a 3 note range. If you don’t have the pipes like James, don’t attempt it. Stick to themes less vocally challenging.

  • Anonymous

Thats right James-You keep promoting Rock & heavy metal I will be forever grateful -now thats entertainment!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

Not every metal singer does multi octave vocal acrobatics, example Ozzy Osbourne, his range isn’t anywhere near Rob Halford’s. A gritty voice like Philip’s might be able to manage a Metallica song. As for hair metal, Bon Jovi’s 80s stuff is often classified as hair metal yet John Bon Jovi isn’t the most impressive singer and your standard Idol rocker has no trouble covering him.

  • Anonymous

Got my ticket to see Adam tonight. If it doesn’t rain, of course (concert is outside so would be cancelled if it rains)

  • justmefornow

Bon Jovi isn’t metal, just no. You are right, though, about Ozzy.
But what I liked most about your post was the mental image of Phillip covering Metallica. LMFAO!
    Thanks, I needed that.

  • Anonymous

    Ooh, have fun! So jealous!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

I never said that Bon Jovi is metal, I said that their 80s songs are often classified as hair metal, though hair metal itself isn’t really metal but anyway.

And I didn’t suggest that Philip can cover Metallica but that someone with a gritty voice similar to his might be handle one of their songs. It’s not just about the voice, one needs a certain presence to sell it convincingly, Philip doesn’t have it.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure the only thing televised will be NCOE, but I’m not sure how many more songs they do. Have fun to all going!

  • Anonymous

“Gritty” isn’t how I would describe Philip’s voice.

  • Anonymous

American Idol is unsure of rock?  So is Durbin, hearing his wimpy album.

  • justmefornow

Exactly. You are so right. It’s not just about the voice. You have to have the presence, confidence, charisma, whatever you want to call it to sell it. This was always my problem with Colton. He never sold it to me. The whiney voice didn’t help either.
And you’re right, Phillip doesn’t have it. And watching the videos from yesterday, Jessica was painful to watch attempting a rock song also.

  • V Jemmy

I don’t want to hear songs butchered by singers with a 3 note range. If
you don’t have the pipes like James, don’t attempt it. Stick to themes
    less vocally challenging.

I think that you and I must listen to very different types of metal.  A number of metal artists don’t have much more than a three note range.  Difference is that they have the aggression, they can carry a tune, and their voice sounds good with the music that their band plays.  Oh, and they have a band.

I think that this is a major flaw in Durb’s plan to get into rock.  Solo artists in rock (at least in the hard rock/heavy metal/thrash metal genres) made it first in a band.  Sure, the band might have been named after them in some cases (Alice in Chains for instance), but they were still packaged as part of a band.  Sure, the pop charts are littered with solo artists, but when I listen to rock, unless your name is Ozzy, Alice Cooper, or Slash, I want a band to scream along with.

But who knows, maybe the rock world isn’t full of people like me who would rather see a band rock out than a single artist with some random backing support people.

  • http://twitter.com/svmreiter Susan Reiter

So is anyone familiar with the Kimmel concerts?  Adam will play more than one song but only one will be aired?  That’s how it works? And I suppose I should look for that in the last minutes of the show?

  • Anonymous

A very small clip of Adam singing at the EMAs with Queen ran on Entertainment Tonight last night.  The hosts were mentioning that Adam Lambert, an AI alum, was Queens new singer as a lead into talking about Idol’s Queen night.  Very, very short, but he looked and sounded fabulous.  Small bits of buzz adds up.

  • http://twitter.com/oceanarose Cathy Plemel

It’s a mini concert so from what I understand they will air 1 or 2 and put around 4 on the website.  Not sure how many he will actually sing though.  I would think NCOE would air and that he will probably sing Trespassing too but other than that no idea.  I’m excited to see the songs plugged in instead of acoustic.

  • http://twitter.com/oceanarose Cathy Plemel

Exciting day for me Colton on Ellen and Adam on Kimmel!  My two favorite Idol contestants.  Colton just tweeted about attending the correspondents dinner and that it was the rest of his big news.

  • Anonymous

lol, if anything, I would think hair metal is hard on ears. Although, it is hard on vocals as well, but not necessarily due to the range.

  • Anonymous

Simon, you’re not alone. I couldn’t stand JLo too. But she’s tolerable now…and er, well-liked.
Eh, a quote from Simon (off his new biography) and his take on JLo was so last season. I guess a straight off article about JLo performing her single next week on AI, whose music video shown earlier on the show (I missed that) was overly criticized by some organization to be too sexy and inappropriate for “family-friendly audience” doesn’t grab more attention than say a feud is brewing between American Idol and Simon and the latter is the instigator.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

3 note range – see death metal.

Solo rockers/metal artists. More in other countries than in the US but see Marilyn Manson. Rob Zombie is also solo but started in the band White Zombie, Marilyn Manson has always been solo to my knowledge.

James has so far been well received as a opening act for Evanescence, Staind, Godsmack, Halestorm & Buckcherry.

  • justmefornow

I just assumed everyone knew James had formed a band, not random backing support people.
I great one I might add with metal guys that quit In This Moment to join him, Archer and Dirty Penney.

An unbiased (i.e. non Durb fan) review from last night’s Buckcherry concert:

Opener James Durbin from Season 10 ofAmerican Idol acted as direct support for BC; I know he was on AI because my mother told me so.

He’s got a fun backing band, with three-quarters of the them looking like they are from a US Bombs photo shoot, bolstered by a guitar player, Dylan Rosenberg, who plays like a baby Zakk Wylde. I could also say Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas, but he didn’t play guitar and most people don’t know who Jim Dandy or Black Oak Arkansas is/was.

Durbin has a sturdy stage presence, even if his recent makeover makes the North California boy seem like he’s trying out for a Darby Crash Broadway show.

What he needs is steady material, because he varies from sleazy rawk and drool to heavy-metal thundering. If he can marry the two, then the 23-year-old will be around a long time.

Metal is all over the map, some of it’s melodic, some of it’s atonal. There are so many subgenres of metal that it’s reached the point of becoming ridiculous (death metal, speed metal, black metal, power metal, symphonic metal, hair metal, progressive metal, et al.) How about in honor of James another category of metal: American Idol metal? Just a thought… From this year’s crew I think Elsie is the best equipped to sing metal. I would have liked to see her take on a song of recent vintage like Dead Sarah’s “Weatherman.” A song to give any singer’s vocal cords a serious workout. (Ouch) With Jessica’s powerhouse voice I can envision her doing fine with the music of Europe’s Symphonic Metal bands who have female lead vocalists like Within Temptation and Nightwish. Anyone for hearing PP sing Metallica? There’ no reason to think Idol is going to have a night devoted to Heavy Metal, not after all these years of using the same formula of pop, country and some rock thrown in for a change of pace. Why mess with a successful format, the highest rated show on television.

  • Anonymous

I like the variety that James sings. I like his metal but I also like when he sings rock with a hint of blues. He also has a beautiful voice for soft rock.

  • Anonymous

Metallica on Idol, now there is a novel thought. Singing aside, the show house band would not at all be able to pull that off musically. But then again, I’d rather see the attempt than the Climb or Wind Beaneath My Wings on tv ever again.

  • Mateja Praznik

Metallica on Idol isn’t some impossible dream, I’ve seen Enter Sandman performed on Swedish Idol. Now, American Idol … As long as folks like Nigel and Ken Warwick are in charge … Yeah, we are stuck with Billy Joel.

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

With Jessica’s powerhouse voice I can envision her doing fine with the music of Europe’s Symphonic Metal bands who have female lead vocalists like Within Temptation and Nightwish.

I love Withing Temptation and Nightwish to death but somehow I never connected Jessica with that style, lol. But if she ever has a mental breakdown and pulls a good girl gone bad thing and trades her Beyonce influence and Idol diva image for gothic gowns and leathers, she totally has a voice for this sort of music.

Hahaha, this reminds me of the “whyyyyy won’t Adam sing opera?” thing.

  • s k

American Idol is not now, nor will it ever be a show where metal will be embraced.  If James wanted to be a metal star why did he go on a big commerical hit show where the contestants are better known for kareoke versions of 70s songs than for anything cutting edge?

It always irks me when some former contestants try to act as if Idol needs to be “fixed”.  Idol is doing just fine…metal or no metal.

PI think it would be laughable Jessica singing Nightwish or Within Temptation. And I don’t think Elise is a very good rock’n’roll singer. I think at this moment she’s totally lost and doesn’t know what she’s about.

Actually, the one who could sing very well a hair metal band like Skid Row or Strypers is Joshua. But he would probably take it to church with meaningless runs and it would be a disaster

America’s taste in music sucks, that’s all I can say.

  • http://twitter.com/bignliddle BigNLiddle

Yeah, but I don’t really think that music is selling well in the US these days nor goes along with what Idol has been trying to put out there…”the search for the next (pop) superstar”.

You can do it even if you’re female and 7 months pregnant

ETA: whoops, I forgot it was supposed to be Idol.

  • http://twitter.com/bignliddle BigNLiddle

No, but they’re considered “classics” to some people…songs that everyone knows the words to. It’s really why I don’t see any of the top 6 doing that well in the music industry, selling millions. Sure, they sing fantastic, but where would they fit? I love Elise and her voice, but I don’t think she’d really fit well anywhere in the industry. Same goes with Joshua. Country genre eats up just about any country Idol contestant, so Skylar may/probably will get lucky. There’s not much buzz around Idol anymore with all these other singing competitions. Idol would really benefit from another pop-singing female artist winning (Which I personally thought Erika Van Pelt may have fit the title, but I got that wrong apparently lol).

    /end rant.

    :)

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

I agree that a female pop artist would be the best winner for Al at this point. However there is no excuse for AI to continue shunning the metal genre, Black Sabbath & Metallica are classics too. There are plenty of metal hits from the 80s that most of the audience will be familiar with, and IMO will make a welcome edition to the tired and overdone AI song list. Viewers have gotten bored and something different to what’s been done before (like an 80s hair metal theme) will inject new life into the show’s entertainment value.

  • Anonymous

LOL .. remember Adam said entitlement’s not sexy.. I’m afraid you’re going to be dissapointed. Peeps who attended Jimmy Kimmel mini concert before said mostly they sing 4-5 songs. That’s why they call it mini concert. But maybe Adam will sing 6 songs. ;)

  • Anonymous

I’m jealous now.. but hope you have fun!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

A female pop artist would be ideal only if she was very very very current. She’d have to have some edge. Edge doesn’t usually win Idol. They could maybe produce a teen pop type though. Other than that someone for the urban charts would be good because it is one of the only charts that is 1. Not overloaded with Idols at the moment and 2. Receptive to Idols.

Really, Idol excels in finding charismatic kid next door types as winners, usually with big voices. That’s not very pop right now.  I think the only one of these shows that could find a real pop star winner in this moment is X Factor.

  • Anonymous

Well they didn’t do it with the X-Factor USA S1 winner.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

She hasn’t even been released yet! LOL

That said, I don’t think she’s a pop type. But what I am trying to say is if any of these shows is going to do it, the odds are it will be XF IMO. Which is saying a lot because I hate that show. Heh.

  • Anonymous

Is James’ music mainstream or what?  I heard “Love Me Bad” over the loudspeaker system at Macy’s today. Had to smile after hearing that.

  • Anonymous

LOL! I’m a James a fan and I’d say LMB fits in perfectly well with typical Mall Music (I won’t comment on whether I think that’s a bad thing or good thing). He really did try to be all things to all people in his album.

  • Anonymous

I agree with you that AI winners are kid next door types. But I disagree that they’re usually have big voices. When people said big voices, they usually think Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera and maybe Beyonce. I think AI winners with big voices are Kelly, Fantasia and Jordin. The first winner of XFactor, Melanie, has big voice.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Oh okay. So big voice is the wrong word for what I mean then. I don’t know what you call it but people who can glory note. LOL. I think Scotty and Lee are exceptions.

  • Anonymous

Really? *spitting milk from my nose* We seem to usually come from the same angle concerning rock artists but Joshua? singing hair metal? Um, not feeling that one at all.

I’m not so sure about Elise being successful post-Idol in rock (don’t know her well enough to know which direction she may go in or what her forte is) but her performance of Zeppelin was the only one I thoroughly enjoyed this entire season. She actually reminds me of Beth Hart a bit.

  • justmefornow

All I can say is THANK GOD he didn’t sing it on Idol. That album really is like a box of chocolates, isn’t it? (Forrest Gump reference lol). I still loved though.
But I can’t wait for this next one, with a established sound and identity.

And speaking of sound, this was with strep throat?!!…..

My interpretation of what James was saying is that he feels Idol viewers may actually enjoy hearing some metal tunes if contestants were given the opportunity to sing them. (it was my impression that they usually are given set list of songs to choose from.) I’ll have to go back and reread the article but I didn’t read anywhere where he said Idol needs to be fixed.

I agree with him. Look how much flack Casey & James were getting from Iovine for wanting to sing Nature Boy and Heavy Metal last season and just yesterday Elise and Philip for singing songs that don’t fit into either the Idol-pop niche or are Idolized versions of non-pop genres. I would find it a much more interesting show as a music fan to hear much more obscure songs in a wide variety of genres but I realize that the formula for Idol has worked for 10 years so unless rating fall thru the roof there is no reason to target viewers like myself. So, I have decided not to watch unless I hear someone may do something unique.

  • Anonymous

UGH…IT STOPS TOO SOON!!! I wish I could hear the rest! That vid has MUCH better sound and I was lovin’ watching and hearing. Rumor has it he has been ill with Step…can’t verify…but you couldn’t tell the way he was singing and running around on stage.

He said he lost 20 lbs. so he could be more fit on stage and it is certainly showing. James already had energy on stage and now he’s a whirling dervish. lol. Reminds me of Mick Jagger saying he ran marathons so he had the stamina for his shows.

  • Susan

Thanks for the info that James’s set is 35-40 minutes!  My camera will shoot 41:37 with the 8GB memory card empty. ;)  I may need to check on new batteries just to be sure though.

I also may skip recording one song in there so I can take a few photos.

All of this is assuming Pop’s allows cameras, of course.  And mine looks big and professional, even though it’s a point and shoot.  I got it into the Pageant to see Adam two years ago though.  And to Scottrade for the AI concert — twice.

I saw the ustream and a youtube of NCOE has already been posted.  Wish I could have been there to see it but right now I am still waiting to see him on Kimmel since it isn’t midnight here yet.  Here is the video of NCOE. He sounded so great. Can’t wait to see him sing this on Idol.
