Idol Billboard Update for Issue 1/31/09 – Idols Get a Lift

Here it is…this week’s Idol Billboard Update…right HERE.

The start of the new season of American Idol means Idols on the Billboard charts get a welcome sales boost in the middle of the January doldrums.   The biggest recipient of the Idol boost was David Cook, who was featured prominently during the Phoenix and Kansas City auditions.   But David Archuleta, Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson all saw sales increases this week, too.

And, Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” debuts on the charts.   The song raced up the iTunes charts when it was released this week. Right now, it still sits at #1.   Kelly’s single will be the big story next week when its huge sales are reflected on the Billboard charts.

Here are the highlights:

  •   David Cook, David Cook climbs from 18-10 on the Billboard 100, 22-17 on Top Internet Albums, 5-3 on Top Rock albums and it re-enters   Top Digital Albums at #7.   It had a 58% sales increase (while most albums in the Top 10 sank) selling 31K for a total of 892K.
  • Cook’s single “Light On” had a whopping 80% increase in sales, 68K for a total of 592K   On the charts:   Hot 100 – 39-23, Hot 100 Airplay – 54-55, Pop 100 – 27-23, Pop 100 Airplay – 26-26, Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks – 29-28 (it debuted last week),   Mainstream Top 40 – 24-23, Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks – 9-7, Hot Digital Tracks – 40-15, Hot Digital Songs- 43-17.
  • Cook’s “Time of My Life” had a 53% increase, 14K for a total of 1.08M.   It remains at #1 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Chart for the 15th week.   There are only six songs by solo male artists that have hit #1 for 15 or more weeks.
  • David Archuleta, David Archuleta climbs from 62-53 on the Billboard 200, a 6% increase 9K for a total of 597K.
  • Archie’s single “Crush” is still chugging along. It had a 9% sales increase, 40K for a total of   145M. On the Charts: Hot 100 – 47-39, Hot 100 Airplay – 75-74, Pop 100 – 40-42, Pop 100 Airplay – 44-51, Hot Contemporary Tracks – 8-7,   Hot Digital Tracks – 44-32, Hot Digital Songs, 47-37 and it moves off the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart to #6 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Recurrents.
  • Arch’s new single “A Little Too Not Over You” climbs from 98-83 on the Pop 100 and 73-66 on the Pop 100 Airplay.
  • Daughtry, Daughtry climbs from 104-97 on the Billboard 200.   It re-enters   Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums at #18 and climbs 21-18 on Top Hard Rock Albums.   It had a 7% sales increase, 5K for a total of 4.4M
  • Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Hudson climbs 92-57 on the Billboard 200, and 24-16 on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums, a 44% increase, 6K for a total of 569K.   I suspect her boost was related to the announcement that she’ll be emerging from mourning her family tragedy to perform at the Super Bowl and the Grammys rather than anything Idol related. I’m so glad she’s coming back.
  • Carnival Ride, Carrie Underwood moved little on the charts this week (BB 200 68-69, Country Albums – 9-9), but two songs debuted on the Hot County Songs Chart – “I Told You So” at #37 and “The More Boys I Meet” at #52.
  • Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” debuts on several charts this week: Hot 100 – #97, Hot 100 Airplay – #58 (lots of spins this week!), Pop 100 – #31, Pop 100 Airplay – #25,   Mainstream Top 40 – #27, Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks – #28, and the Canadian Hot 100 at #82.

    Congrats to Kelly! Yay for staying #1 for so long. I can’t wait to see her numbers next week.

    Looks like The Davids got a nice bump from AI8. It’s really wonderful to see how well they’ve done, considering this economy and the state of the music industry. Awesome.

    As for the other idols enjoying a boost, idol flexes it’s muscle. It ain’t dead yet.

    I’m so happy for David Cook!!! GREAT numbers! I can’t even imagine what will happen when another single comes out! There are so many songs on his album that will be great on the radio; I’m thinking Declaration, Lie, Heroes, Permanent, Avalanche, Life on the Moon, Mr. Sensitive, Kiss on the Neck, Come Back to Me, Breathe Tonight …. ummmm, I guess the whole album! hehe I’ve already purchased tickets for the Patriotic Festival in Va. Beach. Can’t wait… he’s quite the performer live; nothing like him and that beautiful voice of his.

    Will Kelly be number 1 on the Hot 100 next week? Does she have enough airplay for it? Either way, I am loving the fact that she’s been number 1 in itunes for several days now. :D

    Yay for great numbers all around. SLC will be featured in the upcoming episodes this week right? Maybe Archie will get his share of pimpage this time around to start the ball rolling on ALTNOY (not that the ball hasn’t rolled yet, but hey AI pimpage will still be great). Also, hoping for even more DC pimpage especially regarding his upcoming solo tour.

    I hope that the SLC audition show will give Archie more of a boost. I don’t expect that he will get the kind of promo that Cook got, but something would be nice. I’m really surprised he hasn’t cracked 600k yet actually. My hopes for him to be platinum by this Spring may not happen at this rate.

    The 600 sales mark always bugs me. I think of Taylor reaching 600 and then taking 20 years to hit 700 (ok ok, not 20 years, but you get my drift!). But it does concern me for DA with altnoys slow uptick. Maybe it’s the January sales slump, but I’d like to see him get a big boost in sales soon. If AI covers him this week in SLC, it probably would help, also being on icarly soon. Oh, and btw, DA’s tour dates are confirmed now, a good size list. I expect MJ will post them pretty soon.

    Congratulations to Archie on Crush almost going 1.5 Platinum. Or is it called “Platinum plus Gold”? It should be there by next week. I hope the SLC auditions will give Archie’s sales a nice boost too. AI had better do some Archie pimping this Wednesday.

    I think ALTNOY is still ramping up. I have no doubt he’ll get to perform on AI and when he does I expect sales/airplay to explode for DA as well (if Z100 would get its act together and give it more spins that would help too.) I’m almost certain they’ll mention SLC as Archie’s hometown(ish) and maybe we’ll even get an awkward staged run-in with some friends or fam. But they’ll save the performance appearance for later.

    Great to see a boost for the Idols despite the time of year. and GO KELLY!

    I’m not expecting much pimpage of David in the SLC auditions. I think they will probably just mention that it is his hometown but that is probably it. I’m looking forward to the iCarly episode and David’s acting debut.

    I am still reeling over the Cook numbers. And they seem to have spilled over into this week too. Damn, Cookie! :)

    ALTNOY is fine. It only went for adds like what 2, 3 weeks ago? They haven’t even released the video yet I don’t think. Crush was jump started by Z100, I think a lot of songs move like this one is moving now if they don’t get some kind of big splashy debut. No worries.

    I will be curious to see the level of Archie pimpage this week. Since 19 doesn’t manage him, I’m not sure how much motivation they have to push him. I guess it depends on the share they get from the 19R linkage. There should be something though.

    Platinum by THIS spring? That would be a very tall order. Cook’s not even 100% guaranteed to go platinum by this spring, and he’ll be over 900k this after this week. Sales post-Xmas now depend overwhelmingly on radio play and promotion. But, even if an artist– especially a new artist– gets those things in abundance, in the industry of today, sales for almost everybody are a long slow crawl uphill once you pass the holiday season.

    Are we talking March-May, or is May considered summer already? I think DCTR will be Platinum before April, if we’re talking Platinum sold. Chances are it has already shipped Platinum, which means it could be certified very soon. I suspect they’d wait and have it certified closer to when the sales match up and closer to when David goes back to perform on Idol and get his plaque.

    I was talking about Archie, responding to what the the previous poster wrote. I expect it will take DA close to the end of the year, if he even gets there at all. Jordin’s STILL not there, and she had a much bigger hit.

    Cook should go platinum shortly. Still, as I said, there are no guarantees.

    I get that the point was about Archie, I simply disagree that Cook isn’t guaranteed to reach Platinum – if DCTR has already shipped Platinum, it’s guaranteed. Rumor (and logic) says that it has, even if the papers weren’t filed and RIAA didn’t perform an audit yet.
    At this point it’s a matter of when rather than if, IMHO.

    About Archie – anything’s possible. Who know, ALTNOY could suddenly blow up and send the album racing up the chart. Or it could do well and still not sell the album. Or it could flop on CHR. I think the album’s fate rests on what happens with that single, so it’s all up in the air right now.

    Cook is gong platinum. Even if LO plunges of the chart and his next single tanks, he’s going platinum. After this week he’ll probably have only 90k or less to go.

    I can’t see Archie not going platinum frankly. They are clearly following the Jordin plan for him and he’s outpacing her right now. His new song will get some play, it will just take a minute to get going. I don’t know if he has a No Air type hit on his album, but he def has a couple of Tattos. LOL.

    ETA: I agree with Noctem that it may take Archie until close to the end of the year to hit platinum. It depends on how his singles do. But I think end of summer is a real possibility.

    It was already certified 1X Platinum by RIAA (01/22/09).
