Spoiler watch! There is a new one. David Archulta’s personal choice is a contemporary song–”With You” by Chris Brown.

ETA: Three songs One more song to go… I just updated Syesha Mercado’s song choices. The only undetermined song is David Cook’s producer’s choice.

David Cook

  • Simon Cowell chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Faceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Roberta Flack
  • David chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The World I Knowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Collective Soul “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot
  • The producers chose: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith.

Syesha Mercado

  • Randy Jackson chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If I Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Got Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Alicia Keys
  • Syesha Chose: “Fever” by Peggy Lee
  • The producers chose: “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell

David Archuleta

  • Paula Abdul chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“And So It Goesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Billy Joel
  • David chose: “With You” by Chris Brown
  • The producers chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Longerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Dan Fogelberg

David A.’s song choice is just PERFECT! Now, that’s a contemporary song choice and I can’t wait to hear him sing it. I suspect he’ll play up the “hearts all over the world” lyric over the “I need you boo” lyric.

  • Skylark

    It’s “With You”.

  • MrsTrep

    YAY FOR A CURRENT SONG!!!! :clap_tb: :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

I hope the rest of the mystery songs are current as well!

  • cheese

That’s an …. interesting choice. It’s nice that DA picked a contemporary song, but I don’t think I’ll be able to watch while he squats and squints his way through this one. Maybe he has a teddy bear named “Boo” he can think about so that he can connect to the song.

Chris Brown is only one year older than DA but light years ahead of him in pretty much every aspect of performance style, charisma, etc. DA’s vocal should be fine. It will be interesting to see if he can succeed with something a little different. Randy will wet himself over the runs!

I hope there are some more current songs, but I don’t have a whole lot of faith in Nigel to pick one for DC. He probably has only heard of Daughtry as far as modern rock goes.

  • poppyfunk

I’ll bet Archie can sing that one really well. I am really excited for David Cook choices and he will be the more marketable Idol but I wish the best for David A and Syesha and want them to perform well. BTW in local interviews David Cook spoke of “Archie” with a sincere fondness.

  • tinawina

I think it’s a good choice for Archie. It’s not like Chris Brown can sing so well that he has to be afraid of comparisons, and it’s the contemporary version of a schmaltzy ballad. I think he will do just fine with this.

  • Trina

I hope there are some more current songs, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a whole lot of faith in Nigel to pick one for DC. He probably has only heard of Daughtry as far as modern rock goes.

Didn’t the producers pick Maroon 5 for Blake last year? They can manage a modern choice when they want.

    Good choice for Archie!

  • devorrah

I love it. I just heard the you tube video and this song will have the girls rolling in their seats. It is just delightful and catchy. Good choice, David.

  • chachi

Sorry, I just cannot get over it. That is the funniest song choice ever.

  • vixen

MJ, you have this titled “final 4″ spoilers, but i’m pretty sure you realize it’s actually the final 3.

chris brown is barely on my radar, but i listened to the itunes preview and i’m sure it’ll suit archie just fine. it’s really just more of the same, tho, isn’t it?

  • cheese

Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the producers pick Maroon 5 for Blake last year? They can manage a modern choice when they want.

What I’ve heard is that Blake balked at the producers’ choice and got the Maroon 5 song cleared on his own through his connection with the band. I don’t know if the producers had anything to do with that choice.

The fact that the producers chose “Longer” for Archie does not give me much hope for a contemporary song. We’ll see.

  • Mackie

Funny comments about the song, I don’t think “With You” Chris Brown is a smaltzy ballad song. In my opinion, it is a more of smooth R&B/Soul song.

  • http://americanidollowdown.blogspot.com/ Sherry L

I don’t know that Chris Brown song, so I can’t comment on how good it is, but I think the producers choice is terrible and Paula”s choice is not very good.

I think the Billy Joel song is pretty boring. He might have a hard time getting the audience into that one. “Longer” is just a bad song. I can’t believe they picked that.

I’m really curious to see what they pick for David Cook, but I don’t have much hope that it will be good. I have a feeling Syesha’s producer choice will also be pretty lame.

  • tinawina

    I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“with youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Chris Brown is a smaltzy ballad song. In my opinion, it is a smooth R&B song.

I just meant that Archie has a comfort zone of schmaltzy, inoffensive, vauge-ish love/inspirational songs, and “With You” is as close as you can get to that on the Top 40 right now. I like the song, and I like Chris Brown.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

Yay! I love Archie’s choice! I hope he can pull it off. :D

  • calimari

So far the only song I know is the Roberta Flack one Simon chose for Cook. Although, admittedly, I tend to not recognize songs by their titles, so I might be familiar with “Longer” or the Alicia Keyes one, but just not by the title. I’m so sick & tired of Archie that my excitement for the season is failing now as all the interesting contestants, except for Cook, are gone.

  • liza41

“With You” is a brilliant choice. The tween girls/teen girls/mosh pit will go crazy. If he does a good job on this song alone, I think he is a lock for the finals. I think “And So It Goes” is a good choice, but “Longer” is terrible. I can’t believe they can’t come up with a better schmaltzy ballad than that.

  • Mackie

I just meant that Archie has a comfort zone of schmaltzy, inoffensive, vauge-ish love/inspirational songs, and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“With Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is as close as you can get to that on the Top 40 right now. I like the song, and I like Chris Brown.

True, tinawina. Well, if Archie does make it to top 2, hopefully he can choose something less schmaltzy, so I assume he should try something rockish??

  • devorrah

Longer is simply a beautiful ballad by the late great Dan Fogelberg. Archie will have mad vocals with it as Randy always says.

  • Mackie

The producers “nigel” should have given more contemporary songs to the 3 of them. I was hoping that David C. could have been given “With or Without U”- U2, for Archie “Crazy” Gnarls Barkley and for Syesha – well “You know I’m No Good” Amy Winehouse (a song choice to prevent being compared to diva singers)- Oh, i guess its hard for AI to get hold of the rights for these great songs..

  • hotshot06

Idk if DA can really pull this off. Chris Brown is probably one of the hottest artists on the charts right now (the fact that many of you haven’t heard this song makes me wonder if anyone listens to the radio anymore…) and I can see him trying to sell this song and just coming off as corny. He lacks the charisma and maturity that Brown has built his career around, not to mention the very idea of him singing the word “boo,” makes me cringe. Either way the performance will be an interesting one but by no means a showstopper.

On another note, I can’t believe that Randy picked “If I Ain’t Got You,” for Syesha. This is the most bland and contrived pick in the world for her, and its a song choice that is going to set her up immediately for comparison to Keys. He would have been much better off picking a standard that she could put a modern spin on, rather than this beautiful, but heavily stylized piece.

Lastly for Cook’s choice I feel confident that he can work some magic on the “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” but the fact that he chose a song by Collective Soul seems a little too self-indulgent. Don’t get me wrong, I love the band, but I feel like the lyrics to this are almost undiscernable in the original, and for those who might not know the song, this could pose some potential problems.

Overall I’m prepping myself for another boring night on Idol, with uninspired song choices from three very talented individuals. Its such a waste. They really should have the viewer audience select a song from home for them to sing. Or go back to season two where they were given a random song to sing. Either way the producer choices and even the judges lately aren’t really cutting it. Who knows though, maybe they’ll prove me wrong tonight, at least I hope they do.

  • Kirsten

Wow! A song from this decade. I’ve never heard it before and I don’t care for Chris Brown, but I’m thrilled that we finally get a current song.

This is really the first open theme night we’ve had since the competition began. It makes one wonder if the Idols would have sounded more current if they had allowed for less restrictive themes.

BTW “With You” is one of those Stargate produced songs (as if you couldn’t tell by the beat if you listen to it on Youtube as I just did). It was released in 2007 and was number 2 on the Hot 100 for 6 weeks. Last week, it was number 30 on the download chart (having moved 1,586,181 units since it was released). So, I may not know the song, but I bet the kids in the mosh pitt have.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Here’s the video to “With You.” The song isn’t that vocally challenging, so Archi will have to really sell it like Chris Brown does. I’m not holding my breath, but I’ll try to keep an open mind.

  • Kirsten

Here are some stats on the other known songs:

    David Cook
Simon Chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Faceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – written as a folk song in 1957 by Ewan McCall and popularized by Roberta Flack. It appeared on her 1969 album and went to number one on the Hot 100 and won a Grammy for “Song of the Year” in 1972.

David chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The World I Knowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – written by members of Collective Soul and released on their 1995 album. Peaked at #19 on the Hot 100.

Producers Chose: Something that your mother thinks sounds old-fashioned. Probably “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” (Irving Berlin in 1911. BB did not create charts back then)

    Syesha Mercado
Randy Jackson chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If I Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Got Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Alicia Keys – released in February of 2004 and peaked at number 4 on the Hot 100. It won a Grammy Award for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”

Syesha Chose: Something that has been sung on the show 700 times before. Probably “Summertime” (DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin in 1935 for the musical “Porgy and Bess”)

The producers chose: Something to sandbag her. Probably “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (which has caused several other contestants to go bye-bye).

    David Archuleta
Paula Abdul chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“And So It Goesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Billy Joel – written in 1983, but not released until 1989. This song peaked at number 37 on the Hot 100.

David chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“With Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Chris Brown – see above post.

The producers chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Longerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Dan Fogelberg – from the 1979 album “Phoneix”. In 1980, it went to number 2 on the Hot 100 and became a wedding standard. I thought this song was older than it was.

  • Kirsten

They really should have the viewer audience select a song from home for them to sing.

LOL. That would be funny. All the Archie fans would be voting for Cook to sing “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” and all the Cook fans would be voting for Archie to sing “Crank That”.

Or go back to season two where they were given a random song to sing

Turns out those songs weren’t as random as we were led to believe. There were only about 3 songs to pick from (written on multiple slips of paper) and each Idol had their own bowl.

  • poppyfunk

“LOL. That would be funny. All the Archie fans would be voting for Cook to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Man, I Feel Like a Womanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and all the Cook fans would be voting for Archie to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crank Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .”

I shouldn’t have read that just as I took a drink of coffee. Man what a mess I have to clean up!

  • grayhound

I hope I’m wrong here but I’m concerned with DC’s songs. I suppose it is possible to have a “moment” with ‘Yo Face but for some reason I don’t feel particularly in love with his other choice. I guess we shall see what the other pick is for him, but he has had so many “moments” this season I think the expectations are greater for him than the other two.

Do we really believe that DA won’t be in the finale? He could sing I’m A Little Teapot**** and still get there. With 3 songs each I don’t believe anyone will have a completely off night.

In the end the casual viewing audience will listen to the judge’s comments and vote accordingly. It’s almost like they need approval or validation from R, P & S on who to vote for.

Just concerned today, prolly cause we’re nearing the finish line.

    ****eta: and forget the words….

    DCFTMFW

  • J.S.G.

If DavidA sings ‘With You’ with the same rhythm and blues texture that he brought to ‘Shop Around,’ then that will work in a good way.

Syesha has to do at least one number where she can incorporate elements of choreography, so my choice initially would be ‘Miss You’ by the Stones. Then no one could say, ‘You know, Mick Jagger did that song so much better than you did.’

Crossing over to a male vocalist avoids the redundant comparisons, and I can see Syesha using a few of Mick’s dance moves while avoiding the ‘derivative’ label.

  • tinawina

On another note, I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe that Randy picked à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If I Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Got You,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for Syesha. This is the most bland and contrived pick in the world for her, and its a song choice that is going to set her up immediately for comparison to Keys. He would have been much better off picking a standard that she could put a modern spin on, rather than this beautiful, but heavily stylized piece.

I kinda agree. I think “If I Ain’t Got You” is a great song and could be a good choice for Syesha, but only if she takes it in a different direction. Slowed down and sang with emotion, it could showcase her in a new light – as someone who could be a hitmaker right now. But if she sings it just like Alicia – belting and all – it will remind everyone that she ain’t no Alica Keys. Syesha really needs to bring some imagination to this one.

That said, I think covering someone like Rhiana would have been a better choice for her. Perhaps “Unfaithful”?

  • MrsCastro

Awesome!!! I am totally loving David’s choice of “With You”!!!!

    WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s a video of Syesha singing “If I Ain’t Got You” on The One:

(or click the link below… haha Mackie! :P )

  • Mackie

I heard Syesha’s perfomance of “If I Ain’t Got You” when she sang it live at the cancelled show “The One” at YouTube and I Ain’t liking it, she was really.. ermm she kinda butchered the song unfortunately…No one can do any better job with that song besides the great Alicia Keys (whose voice is just amazing!) The beginning was ok but ending part, she sound kinda pitchy and screamy dawg…Hope she will improve tonight though!!! I love that song!! Click here to see it for yourself-

  • Karen

    Kirsten is da bomb!

  • tinawina

Oh god, that is JUST what I was hoping she wouldn’t do. sing it Alicia style and power noting it to death. Tone down the runs, sing it pretty and sincere and she might do well. If she does what she did in that clip – do the same instrumentation as Alicia and oversing, she will bomb badly. Ugh.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

I can’t see Archie doing “With You” It is a song that needs selling as it is not a vocally challenging song. Will Archie go up on the judges platform and sing to Paula?

  • littlepark

Will Archie go up on the judges platform and sing to Paula?

OMG, horrible image! Need brain bleach!

  • carolinagirl

I kinda like Archie’s choice. Contemporary, R&B–I think it will fit his voice quite nicely. I don’t know if it will be a moment, but at least he went for something modern and radio-friendly. If he plays the piano on “And So it Goes” I think it will be beautiful! Simple and heartfelt. I know he doesn’t bring much life experience to his performances because of his age and seemingly sheltered existence, but everyone’s had a broken heart in one way or another.

I think Cook will be great tonight! I am extremely curious to see how he “Cooks” up TFTEISYF! I smell awesome!! I still wanna hear him do Petty’s “Here Comes My Girl”. Yum.

  • PrplDva

I thought I had read on Rickey’s, that DC’s producers choice was American Woman. Was that just a rumor that got shot down?

  • KrazeeK120

I’m having trouble picturing DA singing that Chris Brown song. Vocally, he’ll have no trouble. That said, Chris brown comes across as smooth and sexy and DA, well, just doesn’t. If I shut my eyes during it, I might find it enjoyable, I guess.

I’m not worried about DC. He will do great.

    Here’s to hoping for a DC/Sy finale!

    Can you see DA singing:

    I need you boo
    I gotta see you boo

Hey lil mama, ooh you’re a stunner
Hot little figure, yes you a winner, and
I’m so glad to be yours

And will he be singing this all to the beat of a big kick drum, with a sly sexy smile?

I’d have to answer no to both questions!

  • SpenserJ

Will Archie go up on the judges platform and sing to Paula?

Yeah, thanks for creeping us all out MrRJ.

The night Archie did Shop Around is the only night I liked him. I thought he did really well with that song. So, there’s a chance he could do well with the Chris Brown song (which, even though I am an old fogey, I have heard before).

But – he’ll put me to sleep with the other two – so it’s a moot point anyway. And, I still don’t think I’ll be able to watch Archie sing a Billy Joel song. The recorded version of “And so it goes” is actually pretty bland to me (and I’m a huge Billy Joel fan), but when he performs it live – he gives it his story-telling touch and infuses it with a ton of emotion. It’s a whole different thing. I just do not believe that Archie has the goods (yet) to do it justice. But, good for him if he proves me wrong.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Spence…try this http://youtube.com/watch?v=9-N6b9_Di_I and you’ll see why Archie could never get this kind of emotion.

  • SpenserJ

That was really beautiful MrRJ – it almost made me weepy. Yeah, I’m not expecting the same thing tonight.

  • IGetCranked

Hey MrRJ, It’s better than him singing S*x and Candy by Marcy Playground..

  • gumby

I really, really hope the American Woman spoiler for Cook is just a rumor. It is such an angry song. I don’t want Cookie angry, I want him sexhay!! Pretty Woman would be a much better choice. It would be reminiscent of Alright Now. Alas, not holding my breath.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Hey, I like Sex and Candy. (the song too….)

  • LaFonda

I really would like to see Syesha or the producers pick “Umbrella” by Rhianna for her to sing, and have a scantily clad Syesha showing legs and boobs holding up a real umbrella dancing around on stage. This may get her into the final two. That is the only way I see her making it though. She cannot get by standing up and singing a power ballad. She’s got to use the assets that she has, and that his her theatricalness and looks. Her voice is good, but it is not good enough to win the competition by itself against the Davids.

  • carolinagirl

Will Archie go up on the judges platform and sing to Paula?

    Better Paula than Simon. :shuteye_ee:

  • tinawina

Hey lil mama, ooh youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re a stunner
Hot little figure, yes you a winner, and
Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so glad to be yours

Oh, he won’t sing anything about a “hot little figure” that’s for sure. LMAO. I bet he does the second verse about Jordans on a Saturday. Not that it won’t be funny as well. lol.

  • colette

Funny Kirsten — you sparked what could be a swell contest — what would be THE WORST SONG those producers could choose for these guys?

David Archuleta: Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”

David Cook: Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”

Syesha Mercado: Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”

Seriously (sort of): I know a lot of people want these kids to do current song hits. But whatever era they’re from, the songs that work best on this show are catchy, melodic, emotional — in most cases, sorry, well-plucked oldies. Didn’t Archie roar back by performing “Love Me Tender” and “Stand By Me”?

  • Michelle

    Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Archie roar back by performing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Love Me Tenderà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stand By Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

It’s a matter of perception…a lot of people saw it as more of the same.

I’m not an Archie fan but I’m not kidding myself…With You has the potential be a huge vote-grabber. Between that and Syesha’s Alicia Keys song, Cook’s set is the oldest set of songs…not encouraging IMO.

  • colette

Actually, I think “The World I Know” has great possibilities for Cookie. I’m crossing my fingers on that one.

Found these comments on a list of the worst songs ever written:

    “DAN FOGELBERG
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Longerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 1979
Dear Mr. Fogelberg: Why not consider a stage name?

Having trouble placing this song? Imagine youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re in a dentistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s chair with a 10-inch steel drill about to bore into your molars when this Muzak classic pipes in through the office speakers. The singer sounds like he could be your patchouli-scented sixth-grade history teacher, whispering politely about being in love with you longer than there have been fish in the ocean, higher than any bird ever flew. Then the violins kick in. Then you pray for the sweet, sweet relief of the drill.”

  • colette

CarieB — LOL! Actually it was Jason with the ukelele who could’ve done “Tiny Bubbles”

  • metsin6

I think DA’s song choice is a smart one. The only way he’s going to sell this is not just the vocals but the stage presence. While Chris Brown is no way in the same lead vocally as DA, he has the maturity, charisma, and playful sex appeal to sell the song. DA will sing it well, but it won’t matter if he does it with his usual “eyes closed while squatting down as if he has to take a crap and holding his hand out for change”. He has to really move around the stage, even if it’s awkward a la Clay’s Grease.
Syesha on the other hand has to have a fast song with personality to even have a smidgen of a chance in the final 2. If she sings 3 straight ballads, she unofficially conceding the finale to the Davids. With IIAGY, she has to tone down the oversinging and perform the arrangement in a different way for it to work. What made the song great was the way Alicia Keys sang it. She didn’t melisma it to death, it came from the heart.
That’s why I feel that DC is going to have the best night. He’s always been methodical with his songs. He’s the only one of the group that can really get into the meaning and nuance of the songs and put his own spin on it. He’s going to approach each song differently. And given the way he performed at home has any indication that he’s got that fire in his belly back and going to kick ass is saying something.

Saw this on another forum….Syesha to sing:

Producers Choice: Hit Me Up by Gia Farrell
Personal Choice: Fever by Peggy Lee
Judges Choice: If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys

David A.: Girls Night Out – Miley Cyrus (AKA Hannah Montana)
    Syesha: Crazy Bitch – Buckcherry

“Hit Me Up” is a weird choice for a singing competition, but a lot of people will know it (well at least parents and kids who saw Happy Feet. I think that soundtrack sold pretty well). I think it’s time for Syesha to put on her Haley Scarnato shorts. “Fever” will allow her “personality” to show as she slithers half-naked all over a piano. And the Alicia Keys song was a gift from Randy. I think we will be seeing one less David next week.

  • Jeweldude

What is the purpose picking the worse songs for the idols to sing? We need to help the producers pick a song for DC and SM. David A already has his sentence. This could either be his swan song or he could fly above the others. I vote for the first possibility. David C really needs to do something he can really ROCK. He would be so fantastic at something like “American Woman”. It’s to bad he can’t sing one of his own songs.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Actually, I don’t think “Hit Me Up” is that recognizable. I think they producers must want her gone. I expect bad comments from the judges on that one. Maybe even Jason-like bad.

YES! Finally, a contemporary song! “With You” is actually one of my favorite songs this year.

  • pdog716

    worst selections-

    Syesha – Convoy – C.W McCall
David A. – Mama Said Knock You Out – LL Cool J
David C – Seasons in the Sun – Terry Jacks

  • kthejohnster

actually the worst song choice for all of them is the iO commercial (877-393-4448)

  • mixman12

Oh, that Io digital cable song is really annoying, yet catchy! lol

  • baxter

Well in the end all that really matters is the Little D “paints the words of the song with is voice” and leaves me ” awash in endorphins”…hehehhehe :)

The mystery of Cooks third song is interesting…..I wonder why the drama here.
    Is the blog-mance dead? :o (

  • AFaninCT

David Cook is singing “Dare You To Move” (according to rickeys) and Aerosmith’s “Dont Wanna Miss A Thing”

  • cheese

TMZ spoilers are up. DC changed his song!

  • grrrr

Huh…now I kinda miss the Collective Soul song. Go figure.

  • idolfan86

    Cook changed his song? Weird.

  • baxter

WOW…things that make you go ummmmmm???? WOnder what’s up with the song change???

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

“Hit Me Up?” Seriously? I know it comes from Happy Feet, but it sounds like it belongs on a soundtrack to one of the High School Musical installments. It’s a very, very surprising choice coming from Syesha, unless she’s going to introduce it by giving us some bullsh!t speech about how inspiring the penguins are and how she wants to be free to dance, just like the penguins are. Actually, I bet you that’s the exact speech she gives — before, of course, she breaks down into tears and talks about how 9/11 gave her the strength to carry on in the competition. “Fever” gives her a chance to actress! her way through a song like she did with “Proud Mary,” which means that Simon will probably be the only one to see through it if she lets her legs compensate for her vocals like she did on that one.

As for Cook — the kids are basically getting one chance this season to pick the song that most embodies the type of artist they are and the kind of record they’d like to make, and he picks…mid-90s soft-tempo rock? Okay, my friend. And with “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” my money’s on him doing the Jeffrey Gaines version. Look it up on iTunes.

Archie: Hooray for something contemporary (not that I enjoy most Top 40 music, but I do like balance on this show), but “With You” hardly screams modernity to me. The Backstreet Boys could have easily recorded this same song thirteen years ago. But the good thing about this choice is that it showcases the modern pop trend of moving slightly more bubblegum-of-center than in recent years (Exhibit A: that insipid Elliott Yamin song), which is exactly where David A. falls on the music spectrum, and this is his way of reminding Sony of that.

Oh, and kind of O/T: Was anyone else disappointed by “Rockferry?” I love “Mercy” and was expecting an album full of high-octane retro beats from Duffy, but it’s mostly Winehouse-lite ballads. Meh.

    I don’t see them??

  • cheese
  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Somebody here (me) questioned all along whether Cooks choice was a smokescreen. Perhaps it was.

  • colette

Uh oh. The Aerosmith’s song OK, pretty standard.

But the Switchfoot tune? It’s droning, hardley any melody, takes a long time to get to the chorus…..say it ain’t so, Cookie!

I’d be so disappointed if he stumbled on song choice….

  • Michelle

I’m loving Cookie’s new song choices.

  • milajoy

    Thank you, MJ!

  • milajoy

Also, here’s David Cooks other two:
Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot.
“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith.

  • tmtpoole

OK, now I’m curious about the tidbit…

  • cheese

OK, now I’m afraid the tidbit is “DC had to change his song in mid-dress rehearsal”

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

“Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” is fast approaching “needs to be retired from Idol FOREVER” territory. I hope that’s Nigel’s choice, because if Cook picked that pile of dreck for himself, I’ve officially lost all hope for him.

  • milajoy

This night is REALLY going to be great!

  • baxter

Is the Areosmith song the one from some movie??? Too lazy to go tubing for it right now.

DOn’t have a clue about that Switchfoot song. Aren’t they a a Christian Rock band??? Cause is they are it’s no wonder I don’t recognise them or the song…..I’m a heathen!!!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Baxter — Switchfoot is a Christian band, but they’ve had some pretty successful crossover hits. I would say that their Christian message is distinctive, but not preachy. Actually, that’s what iTunes says about them — I have no opinion, seeing as how I’ve only ever heard one of their songs, LOL.

  • tmtpoole

This night is REALLY going to be great!

    OK – I’m like a kid at Christmas…

Me too! I just downloaded it and re-coiled a little from my computer when I saw it tagged as “inspirational” genre! Cookie is a heathen, too, though! What’s up with that?

  • Michelle

baxter – yep, it’s the Armageddon song. I know, but recognition factor!!!ftw

Switchfoot – I didn’t recognize it till I Youtube’d it, but it’s got a great soaring melody type thing going….oh, you know :D right down DC’s alley.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!?! :wink_wp:

  • milajoy

    lol…I didnt mean to.

  • s0x_prisoner

Ahhh yes I love that Switchfoot song!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

I like Aerosmith, but I don’t want to hear Cookie singing DWMAT on the freaking Idol stage. Then again, he could change my mind. The Switchfoot song isn’t so bad, but I hope he can speed it up a little; it takes a while to get anywhere good.

Major trainwreck potential for Archie tonight on “With You”…I hope. VFTW might get another field day!

  • grrrr

baxter – yep, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the Armageddon song. I know, but recognition factor!!!ftw

The silver lining here is, of course, that the last time this song was heard on the show was when it was sung by Antonella so, really, it can’t and won’t be worse.
Personally, DC’s prob. the only person who could make me not loathe that horrid song, but he’d have to overcome about 10 years of hatred.

  • colette

A Christian rock band? An Armageddon song? Is this Idol suicide or what?

OK, a few deep breaths are in order here.

I wish I could believe that this song, if he’s doing it, will be the kind of 2-minute punch he needs. The song choice challenge is this: it can’t just be a song people like a lot for its message or whatever. It has to be a song that can have an opening, bride and big finale in TWO MINUTES.

Am I the only listener that doesn’t get how that could happen with this Switchfoot tune?

The only thing I’ve been worried about with Cookie is that he’ll pick a real outside, edgy-indy thing, cause that’s what he loves most, and blow the contest — which relies heavily on votes from mainstreamers….

  • nomi

Ahhhh… The played-out “Armaggedon” song. Didn’t someone already sing it this season? I know Anotella Barbarella sang it last year during her heyday. Dianne Warren is never far away from these proceedings, is she?

  • colette

oops, meant “opening, BRIDGE and finale”

You’re not alone. It’s a nice song, but it’s rather dirge-like. I’m not sure it’s the best choice.

  • baxter

I wonder too if DC pulled a fake out on us. His camp has been so tight with spoilers all year that I found it hard to believe he was so casual about announcing his song choice. I hope this is the situation and not another forced change by the producers.

ETA….got off my lazy bum and tubed that Switchfoot song. Nice song…but DC is going to have to cut and paste that thing to squeeze it into 1:30. Fingers and toes are all crossed!!

  • NickDaddyo

I’ve always said if I were on Idol, one song I would certainly perform is “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot.

    Make me proud, David Cook.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    The producers chose: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Want to Miss a Thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Aerosmith.

There’s ONE good piece of news; DC didn’t choose that song himself.
