Some news for you on a slow summer weekend: The latest blog entry from David Archuleta’s My Space:

David has begun working on his upcoming album:

We started working on the album this week, and have been looking through songs and seeing which ones we like. I’ve also been meeting with several songwriters and producers, and the whole thing has just been really exciting! I can’t wait to see how things turn out in the end. We’ve found a song that I really like already too.

Tour rehearsals are ongoing, and David appears to be enjoying them! And he’s going to be fitted for outfits!

Rehearsals have turned out well so far, and the band is a great group of people. I had a tour rehearsal today, and after that I ran all over the place for different meetings and some phone interviews. Tomorrow I’ll be meeting with the vocal coach they have for all of us. He has worked with a ton of different people. After that I think I’m going to meet with the stylist and work some outfits out for the tour. So that should be pretty fun haha.

ETA: Pulled from comments, More about the album from David’s father from David Archuleta Fan Blast:

I am so happy to also let you know that David is doing extremely well this past week and has actually been meeting with some of the best songwriters and producers in the business. People that have worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to OneRepublic, Beyonce, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morisette, Enrique Iglesias, Brittney, Christina, Alicia Keyes, Sean Kingston, Usher, JT, Nick Lachey, I could go on and on. It is VERY exciting!! David has also been recording some songs that will be on the album already. He is definitely having a BLAST!! Tour rehearsal is also going VERY well. I think everyone will be very happy with the songs he has chosen to perform. There will be something for everyone!!!

David Archuleta: From American Idol to Pals With Vanessa Hudgens & Zac Efron?

Will David Archuleta make an appearance with Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens? That’s the subject of an item from Mike Walker of the Enquirer and he reports that Disney is driving strong to the hoop to get an cameo of the American idol runner up for the big screen movie High School Musical 3. It seems like a pretty shrewd move by Disney to try and grad Archuleta for the film but can they pull it off?

Walker writes that David is “up for grabs, and Disney’s grabbing the cute-as-a-button “American Idol” finalist for “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” – if they win the behind-the-scenes battle that’s raging with Fox, which has first dibs on David and an ironclad contract for his “Idol” tour this summer, which is just when Disney needs him for “Musical…”"

I’m really curious what Archie’s first album going to be like. I know its gonna be a pop soul kind of music which he loves, but I’m just curious how it is gonna be like with his amazing recording voice. The mostly ‘old’ themes during AI show restrict on what type of music he can do. I hope his new album would be cool, hip and young just like him!! :) About Disney, he should concentrate on the success of his first album and make himself more well-known before he tries out the Disney thing.

I KNEW it!!!!! If 19E won’t let him go now, I still stand by my prediction that Archie eventually lands with Disney.

The “High School Musical” rumor has been debunked. I personally doubt he’ll be doing it. Although, David A. has been listed as one of the invited guests in the WALL*E premiere next week.

I had to go snooping after seeing this thread!

If I was not so darned convervative I’d bet money on David A ending up with Disney… it will happen eventually. He’s a perfect fit. He’ll probably end up with a tv series on disney channel where he plays a pop star. He’d definitely appeal to the tweeners and that’s what Disney Channel is all about. Trust me – i speak from experience.

  • Virgii5

I’d bet money, LU, that he will not end up on a tv series on the Disney Channel where he plays a pop star. I’m sure they would love that, but that isn’t exactly what he is pining to become.. I’m sure it’s last on his list of things to do He’d probably go to college full time rather than do that, to be honest. Just my opinion.

    I can’t wait for his new album(s)!!!

  • Lu

Virgii – I guess time will tell. That route hasn’t worked out too badly for Miley Cyrus.

  • snuffles

By the time 19E releases their claws from David he’ll be too old for Disney.

  • mrcritic1980

Disney has an “American Idol” attraction coming in January and they have lent the talents of past “Idol” contestants in the past. I think they would let Archie do something for Disney if it’s in the best interest of 19E.

I really really cannot see David A as an actor. He just seems too akward on stage for that type of thing. He is most comfortable only when singing I think? In High School musical they have to be able to sing AND dance and we all have seen his attempts at the dancing. Who knows though, with enough training you can make just about anything happen

  • jpfan

Disney isn’t a bad fit for Archie now but he’s a much, much better singer than any of the other Disney teens. He’s pretty serious about his music so I think his album will “deeper” than the usual Disney stuff. He’s not just getting by on cute and he can go into other musical directions as he gets older if the pop thing doesn’t work out.

I don’t worry about tiring him out at all. He looks to be on top of the world since he lost Idol. Second seems to suit him just fine.

  • Mackie

From that blog posted by Archie himself, it is clear that he is concentrating on doing his first solo album and the tour, not some Disney show. Whatever it is, I think he will be fine without this Disney thing.

By the time 19E releases their claws from David heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be too old for Disney.

Arch just turned 17 and will be 18 soon this December. Ashley Tisdale is already 23, Zac Efron is 21 and Vanessa Hudgens is 20. So, he would still be young enuff for Disney, not that I would like him to go for Disney even though that would be a very marketable move for him if he also learn how to dance like them, I rather see Archie be in a more serious music career like Jordin.

  • gerreb

very well said. i don’t think he’s too interested in the disney stuff. i think he has a better understanding of what music can do for people and what it’s done for him, and I don’t think he wants to communicate that through doing Disney musicals.

  • abbysee

While I wouldn’t mind seeing him do a cameo in the movie, I really don’t want him associated with these guys who are more actors than singers, and really not great singers either. I don’t know if they are flashes in the pan, but it seems like it.

David is a serious musician, so I don’t think he could do that and still consider himself such. With the people clamoring to work with him, he doesn’t need the Disney folk. If David makes a good amount of money Jive will never let him go. If they treat him well, he will never go elsewhere.

Jpfan, second suits David well, I was worried about what losing would do to him, and should not have. He’s on top of the world. It’s like the weight of the world was lifted off his shoulders. I think it wasn’t papa that was stressing the kid, but the stress of the competition. As soon as it was over he became animated. It’s a beautiful thing. I think his cd should be a mix of john mayer meets michael jackson circa the Off The Wall album. Something fun and peppy with some message music thrown in.

  • awilliams

    Yep, what abbysee said.

I remember how animated and almost joyful David A was when he came out and did “Shoparound” on AI. Towards the end he looked anything but joyful.

I think many underestimate David A. He looks very young and appears awkward and tonge-tied at times but that doesn’t mean the kid isn’t thinking this all through. I suspect he is way too serious for the Disney/Hollywood crowd and that he will gravitate towards music that reflects his own sense of ethics/morals; “message” music if you will.

You know what? This might sound kind of off-the-wall but think…his dad was/is a jazz musician, his mom is a singer too…I can really see David A expanding over the years into a kind of jazz-pop fusion style. Sting did…it took him a few years to go that route but I think Sting is still fabulous today. Whose to say a young one like David A won’t branch out like that. In 15 years he will only be 32; still young in the music world.

  • soundscene

I agree with awilliams and abbysee–David is far too serious about music to want to go the Disney route. It would be like he’s making light of something he cares so deeply about. He used to have (still has actually) a profile on iLike, and his musical tastes are extremely varied. I remember somebody found his playlist from myspace and, again, varied–from pop to rock to hip hop to R&B to soul. The woman from TV Guide who interviewed him commented that David seemed to have a musical library in his head. Somebody would mention a word and he’d start singing a song with that word in it (in one of his early interviews, he did just this, catching himself when he realized he couldn’t sing just any song on camera). Music is how he expresses himself, literally at times. Disney is just not the direction I could see him going.

And it seems that Jive is taking that into account right now, since he’s meeting with some great producers and songwriters. Frankly, I’m surprised that he’s already recording. But it does make sense to get some things done while he’s not on the road. And he’ll likely be recording more songs than will actually make the album, so he and Jive will have a lot of different songs to choose from.

I wonder if this means we’ll be getting a single soon?

  • Aladdin88

I definitely agree with soundscene and awilliams…I think many people underestimate Archuleta and believe they have his future career pegged as a result of what they saw on American Idol. Based on what he told Michael Slezak during his EW interview, even David didn’t think he did a very good job of showing the audience who he truly was.

Yes, he’s still a teen and may like Disney, but I doubt that someone with that much natural musical talent and broad knowledge of so many different genres would choose to shoe himself into tween pop for the sake of self-promotion. In that same Slezak/EW interview, David admitted to studying old Billboard chart books for fun to learn the history of songs from all around the world–clearly, this is a guy who takes his music very seriously. I would be stunned if he ended up on the Disney roster.

Thanks for bringing that up. I had forgotten about that.
Archuleta takes it seriously and has got the smarts to boot too. He may do very well on the business side as well. There’s alot we don’t see presented over the television set. I suspect his co-contestants saw more of this side of David A. hence the respect Cook shows him. Didn’t Andrew Lloyd Webber refer to him as a prodigy?

I’m trying to think of other teenage “prodigies” who went on to successful and respected careers; Stevie Wonder comes to mind. Carole King was still a teenager when she was writing professionally. I think she wrote a string of hits for Phil Spector back in the 60′s.

  • Aladdin88

I think it was Neil Diamond who called David a prodigy, but ALW seemed impressed with him as well. Regardless, that’s quite a compliment and only reinforces why I don’t think we’ll be seeing him go the Disney route any time soon. He may be a teenager in many ways, but musically he’s far from being one.

  • elle

Awilliams, ALW himself was working in the industry when he was 17.

I also always find it interesting that anyone thinks David and Disney are a good fit. It must be that they have never really turned on the the Disney channel to see what it’s about. He really bears no relation to the type of shows and type of singers on that channel. Every Disney star is packaged the same way – do a show, make an album, even if you can’t sing. David clearly CAN sing and has expressed no interest in acting right now. Don’t see the fit.

I believe there was a rumor about him doing a cameo in HSM3 – not too wild of a stretch – but nothing about a starring role. Doubt it will happen though.

  • bluegreen

David is a great natural fit with Disney, proved by his audience demographics during the show; I am sure they would love to throw him in HSM3 or else create an appropriate vehicle for him when they get the chance.

Whatever, he is a great natural talent and I really am looking forward to his album. He’s got a wonderful gift and I’m happy for the kid that big companies are fighting over him. Gotta feel good.

I think he’s gonna have a super career. I really do!
