Chris Daughtry and his band Daughtry dropped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform their single “Crawling Back to You”.

The tune is from the band’s new CD Break The Spell, just released on Monday.   According to sales predictions, Break The Spell is expected to sell between 140-160 copies next week.

And as a super-special bonus, Chris and the boys perform an acoustic version of The Black Crowe’s “She Talks To Angels” for VH1 Top 20 Countdown.

Gahh, ‘She Talks To Angels’ is one of my (many) favorite songs. That was beautiful.

Chris’s voice is NOT pleasing to me. Does he always sound like this?

I just can’t get into Daughtry’s latest single. I think his voice is beginning to show wear & tear.

  • Nele621

If he is already showing wear and tear, what is he going to sound like at 40? How can he make it to 50? It’s not just the voice, but he squeeks when he tries to get the higher notes.

I remember I think it was the Leno performance I really liked how he sounded. Maybe he just has a virus.

There is something wrong with Daughtry’s voice, I first noticed it when he was on Idol singing his last single. He’s lost power and range. Something is really off and he didn’t sound good neither at the AMA and this performance on Ellen.

I definitely think Daughtry needs to go to a vocal coach or an ENT.  His voice is not sounding good, and it hasn’t for some time.

Yea, something isn’t right with his voice.

I thought the Ellen performance was pretty good…not his best but certainly not bad. It’s a tough song to sing. Angels though was excellent. Chris at his finest!

Pretty sure his voice is fine… listen to She Talks to Angels…. The difficulty is the song — Crawling Back to You — is replete with super high notes that are very difficult to sing live, in addition to rocker “screamos” which most pop fans don’t get but are pretty common in rock music.

vinny rock, I understand what you’re saying, an A#4 is a pretty high note to sing several times in a song.  It just sounds a bit too high, and maybe it would be better to arrange the song in a lower key for live performances (which by the way, many musicians do).  Singing this song at all of the promo stops, as well as tour is going to take a toll on his voice.

After reading everything here I was expecting the worse on the Ellen video but I actually thought it was pretty good.  The verses were beautiful, he can get a little screamo on the chorus but I think that’s just him infusing his rock vibe.  I liked it!  Of course I LOVE She Talks To Angels!

This song is pushing his voice with all the high notes. He either needs vocal rest or changing the key of the song to a lower key. If he keeps pushing his voice like this there is a good chance he will damage his vocal chords.

At the AMA and Ellen, Chris did not sound good.  I believe it is a combination of sound mix and straining of his voice.  On “She talks to Angels”…he sounded amazing.  Powerful, rich and no hint of vocal straining.  Very well done.

As far as I’m concerned, he could sing She Talks To Angles all day.  Love it!  I think the performance on Ellen was slightly better than the one on the AMA’s.  I do agree that CBTY does put a certain degree of strain on his voice but there were parts of the performance that I enjoyed.

    Thanks mj
