I planned to post the awesome news that Chris Sligh had co-written Rascall Flatts’ new single “Here Comes Goodbye”, but then I got an email message that Chris had taken down his blog post, and not to mention it until Monday.

But maybe it was so the blogs wouldn’t scoop USA Today.

I won’t be making that mistake again. Heh.

Seriously, though, what a fantastic coup for Chris, who was my favorite singer of the Season 6 crew. Chris wrote “Here Comes Goodbye” last April with Clint Lagerberg, who also co-wrote Chris’ single “Empty Me”, a Top 10 single on the Christian charts.

“He had the idea, ‘What if we treated goodbye like a person?’” Chris says. “We sat down and took it from there, painted this whole picture.

“I remembering sitting after we finished it and thinking, ‘This song is going to make a lot of women cry.’”

The writers cut a demo with Nashville singer Sean McConnell the following day, and the day after that, the group put it “on hold” — meaning Chris and Clint couldn’t pitch it to any other acts until Rascal Flatts decided whether or not they would record and release it.

Chris found out in late October that Rascal Flatts actually had cut his song. He learned Wednesday that it would be the first single from the band’s new album, Unstoppable, out April 7.

Chris hasn’t heard the Rascall Flats version yet. He describes the song as “pretty heartbreaking.” He says, “The demo we did was just piano/vocal, I know that they did full band, and they’ve got strings on it and everything.”

“Here Comes Goodbye” goes to radio stations Tuesday, 1/21.

Chris co-wrote a song with Season 6 contestant, Gina Glocksen, for her upcoming album. Plus, Phil Stacey and Luke Menard are both considering Chris’s songs for their next projects.

“To have the first major cut be a single for Rascal Flatts is pretty insane,” he says.

Congratulations, Chris.

Wow, Chris must be one heckuva writer!!!!

I was not a very big fan of Chris Sligh’s on the show BUT, I love Empty Me. It’s really an exceptional song, so I am very excited for Chris and can’t wait to hear the new song.

  • cookcricket

I cannot wait to hear it!

Congrats, Chris. That’s great for him!

  • janerazor

I didn’t care for Sligh during auditions, semis, or top-12…still not a fan. However, it’s always nice to see an AI alum catch a break. I think it reflects well on the show. So good on ya, Sligh.

This is GREAT NEWS…for Chris Sligh!

    Congratulations, Chris!!!

  • risalea

“Here Comes Goodbye” means here comes a GMA! It’s a fabulous song…had a chance to hear it when Chris had the demo up for awhile after he wrote it. Congratulations, Chris!

OK, fingers working faster than the brain…I meant CMA!

I loved Chris in Season 6 but was ready for him to go when he did; he’d seemed like he was ready to go himself. I love that blog post he wrote to last season’s contestants and his new video. I think he’s a great guy and am so happy for him. A lot of Christian artists rub me the wrong way, but Chris is just so down to earth and knows how to laugh at himself.

Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag for good this time. :o hmy_tb:
    Congrats, Chris! :clap_tb:

Congrats Sligh! I betcha you’ll be making some serious “bank” on that!

Way to go, Chris Sligh! I have said it since the beginning – that guy was going places and look. He can sing, he can write! I saw that he is on the cover of the Jan-Feb 09 issue of a magazine with a 6 page article. Now Rascal Flatts! Looks like his year.

  • CFIdolsfan

Congrats indeed to Chris. He was my next favorite season 6 guy, after Phil. I believe I had read Chris saying some time back that Phil was introducing him to people in Nashville. So I am sure that Chris meeting Rascal Flatts, whose leader, Gary LeVox cowrote Phil’s “If You Didn’t Love Me,” might have resulted from that. Phil himself had said that his next cd would be a Christian one, so if Chris has at least one song on it, it will indeed very exciting.

MJ, me, too. I hope Chris has a long, fulfilling career performing, composing and producing. He has an instinct for great hooks and a gift for songwriting prolifically on demand.

Fixed the link for ya here, iam2blonde2think.

I’m really happy for Chris. I thought he had the best voice of the guys in season 6 and if it was just about that he’d have been in the top 5. I’m not a country music fan but for the genre it sounds pretty good.

  • sanfrangirl21

Perhaps Chris will comment about how it came about that he met Rascal Flatts – if he did. It might be one of those Nashville secrets? I don’t think it was through Phil since he was dropped from Lyric Street.

  • HstryQT

Sorry for the “retract that comment” email MJ – but Chris said to not say anything so had to pass along the word!

Glad to see you posted it – sorry USA Today scooped you! Tricky tricky.

SO SO SO excited for Chris!! He deserves it, for sure. Now I don’t know if I should keep the Christian station on 24/7 or the country station – Chris is EVERYWHERE :) . (And that’s a great place to be!)

I really liked Sligh and to this day I think he bailed on purpose after he made the tour. If I recall he sang “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” off beat the whole way through. I KNEW he was better than that performance.

Anyway, things are working out for him..so, YAY!

  • sanfrangirl21

wow – I just now listened to the link of the RF song…can’t wait to hear the whole song on the radio!…. and I finally finished reading all the articles about Chris. It looks like 2009 just might be the year for him! GO CHRIS! I love it when Idols make big.
