    Desperate.

How so? It’s just giving more people an opportunity to audition who didn’t already. They add last minute auditions all the time.

I like how they listed the accomplishments of the last few winners-that’s something that idol has over the other two shows.

Season 10′s Karen Rodriguez made it onto the show after auditioning on MySpace. I don’t think that it’s a sign of desperation.  Part of it is about giving more people a chance to audition, but a bigger part is about promoting the show online, and via social media sites.

Opening auditions again this late does leave the impression they aren’t totally satisfied with the contestants they’ve seen so far.

extended cause there’s not enough talent. whyyyyy

  • chessguy99

I take it as they aren’t finding enough decent singers to fill the fodder spaces. They pretty much should have an idea of their top 4-6, but they need passable talent to make up the early elims.

I kind of wonder if they are doing this because with Nicki Minaj now known as a judge, auditioners who are more in her genre might audition where they wouldn’t have before. The regular auditions already had started before the judges were announced.  Also I don’t believe in other years when they did online audtions like the myspace ones, they were done so late. So maybe they are looking for a different type of contestant and now that the judges have been announced, it will encourage different types to audition.

Karen C, that makes sense. The lower level producers who pass the auditioners have been cutting anyone in Ms Minaj’s genre for years. If they didn’t know she was joining the panel back when the auditions were filmed – they would not have been told to let some rappers through.

So now they have to fill in some of the blanks, since Ms Minj on the panel creates an expectation for the audience, and it wouldn’t hurt if there were some level of built in fans already on their myspace pages…works for me as a good reason.

    IMO.

Just like with the small town tours, I doubt that they are seriously looking for contestants.

They pretty much should have an idea of their top 4-6, but they need passable talent to make up the early elims.

chessguy99, they also need a strong mid card to keep people’s attention after the fodder is eliminated…else the audience drops off until much closer to the Finale.

They might do that to some extent anyway, as a natural attrition – but seasons with a poor mid card are more vulnerable to that effect.

Of course, I may be giving the Idol PTB too much credit here – who knows? *snerk*

    JMO.

Not only the producers, but the auditioners themselves probably wouldn’t have auditioned.

They must have found some new plants.
