Song Spoilers for Tonight

It’s the girls vs. the overs tonight. 5 acts will be performing and two will be eliminated at the end of the show. Fergie is tonight’s musical guest.

Dermot is already on the main stage and the judges are already seated. Dermot hands the judges some love hearts.

Rai-Elle Williams – Mr. Big Stuff (Jean Knight)
Rai-Elle is pretty naughty in her VT. She is small, but mighty!
She gets a big colorful production with dancers. I think for the first time this season she seems kinda comfortable and in her element on stage. She sounds fine, but the song isn’t particularly demanding either. I also don’t think it will motivate people to pick up their phones. It’s such a weird song choice.
Louis says she has a small body, but a big future. Nicole compliments Rai-Elle’s hair and says she reminds her of a young British Lauryn Hill. Simon praises her and says she has to be in the semifinal next week. Sharon praises the song choice from the 70’s.

Kevin Davy White – I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston)
Nicole introduces him as a real artist and his VT is in this spirit, too. His parents came from Paris to visit him in London. He speaks to them in French and tells them his song choice for the week.
Kevin is playing an acoustic guitar tonight. He slowed down the song a lot. This sounds interesting, but will it work? He doesn’t have a big voice like Whitney, but he is doing his best to make the song his own. Hmm. In a way I like what he is doing, but half of me thinks this performance is just dragging on forever.
Louis says he is real and has real talent. He liked the performance, but not as much as last week’s performance. Sharon agrees that Kevin is a great artist and the nicest person ever on the X Factor. She says the performance was good, but not Kevin’s best. Simon liked that Kevin did something different with the song, but thinks the guitar was out of tune and lost the emotion. He says tonight’s performance didn’t quite connect, but thinks Kevin will survive the week. Nicole once again pushes his artistry and says he made this great song his own.

We are back from the break and Dermot is chatting to Fergie. Kevin is a big fan of hers and the BEP. She says he slayed it tonight.

Matt Linnen – Fallin’ (Alicia Keys)
His family visits him in the studio. He went home. He was raised by a single mother and she and his two sisters are the main women in his life.
This song choice is pretty overdone on singing talent shows, but Matt is hoping to make it his own with his raspy rock voice. But the song is still RnB and it’s weird hearing a rocker sing RnB. Matt is giving it his all. Overall, good performance, but weird song choice. Did he pick this song himself or was it handed to him?
Louis calls him consistent and praises the way he works the stage. Sharon says this was probably the best performance he has done … today. Simon calls him the most improved contestant this season. He calls him a fighter and says he has a lot of respect for Matt. Nicole also calls him a fighter and says she is proud of him.

Holly Tandy – Love Me Harder (Ariana Grande feat. The Weeknd)
She was really happy with her performance last week. She also met Harry Styles last week and got a selfie with him.
The song got a minimalistic EDM re-arrangement. She certainly made the song her own, but I’m not sure it’s going to pay off. This song just doesn’t work in a singing competition and I don’t think it will make people vote for her.
Simon praises the song choice and calls her current and relevant. Nicole wanted the vocals styled out. Louis thinks Holly could be in trouble tonight. Sharon says Holly did herself proud.

Grace Davies – Hesitate (Grace Davies)
Grace has a lot of experience with songwriting and she wrote her fair share of love songs. She makes fun of her early songwriting in her VT.
She is doing an original song tonight and it sounds really promising. I could totally see this released as a single. I only wish she had a better voice. But this is clearly the performance of the night – Grace got the pimp spot for a reason.
Simon calls the performance ‘great’ and also praises her VT. He says she got her mojo back. Nicole praises her songwriting. Louis calls her a seasoned performer and predicts she will have an amazing career. Sharon calls the song ‘brilliant’ and says she hopes people will vote for her.

The voting is now open and it’s going to last just over 4 minutes. Dermot recites the voting instructions. Time for a recap.

The winner of tonight’s prizefight will get to meet songwriter Ali Tamposi in Los Angeles. DErmot chats to the judges. The voting closes right after that.

We are back from the break. Tonight’s top vote-getter is Grace Davies. It’s time for the prizefight!

Rak-Su – Mona Lisa (Rak-Su)

Grace Davies – Hesitate (Grace Davies)

The vote is now open and it’s going to last about 10 minutes.

We are back from the break and it’s time for tonight’s musical guest, Fergie. She is performing her new single ‘Save It Til Morning’ from her second solo album ‘Double Dutchess’. Fergie is also a member of The Black Eyed Peas. Remember when Nicole Scherzinger missed some auditions this season? That was because she was performing with the BEP in Azerbaijan instead of Fergie.

The vote is now closed. Results after the break.

We are back and it’s time to find out who won the prizefight. The winner of the prize-fight is Rak-Su. Finally, Rak-Su managed to win a prizefight. The song is TOP 3 on iTunes, so it bodes well for them. I liked Graces’s song too and wouldn’t be mad if she had won.

So, who is going home?

Safe:
Grace Davies
Kevin Davy White
Matt Linnen

Going home: Holly Tandy and Rai-Elle Williams

I don’t think the results shocked anyone tonight. Song choice is everything. Or at least half of the battle.

Next weekend, all 6 contestants will be performing together. James Arthur and Ed Sheeran will be the musical guests. James is releasing a new song, ‘Naked’ on Friday!
