Song Spoilers for Tonight

This week the X Factor is honoring the late George Michael.

Some might remember George Michael’s appearance on the finale of season 6, when he sang a duet with Joe McElderry.

It’s the overs vs. the groups tonight!

Dermot enters through the entrance above. Harry Styles is tonight’s musical guest. The judges are already seated behind their table. Two double eliminations that were promised last weekend are off, one act will leave each night!

This weekend’s prize is opening for Little Mix at one of their concerts in Manchester Arena later this month.

This weekend’s theme is George Michael and we get a nice video montage.

Rak-Su – Faith (George Michael)
Rak-Su got to #1 on iTunes this past week and had another song in the TOP 10. We see them plan their performance. It seems they will be writing something new to go over George Michael’s chorus.
Oh yes. They start with singing, but then they start their original rap. They might not be strong singers, but they are current and relevant.
Nicole loved the performance. She says they bridged the gap between the old and the new. Louis mentions their iTunes success. He says they make it look so easy. Sharon says they made the song their own. She enjoyed the performance. Simon says they are current and relevant. He gives them glowing comments.

Matt Linnen – Careless Whisper (George Michael)
Matt visited his two sons on Monday. He actually has another son in Spain. We see him with a coach in rehearsal.
He gets strings quartet on stage and a band. Matt’s rearranged the song into a beautiful rock ballad, but I wish his vocal execution was better. The start was not solid. Nicole and Simon give him a standing ovation at the end.
Simon says Matt pulled the cat out of the bag. He calls his performance ‘ballsy’. He says his boys will be proud of him. Louis says this was Matt’s best vocal performance yet. Sharon loved the gritty-nes in his voice, but still feels some insecurities in his voice as an artist. Nicole says he came out fearless tonight.

Jack & Joel – The Edge of Heaven (Wham!)
They say this is their week. They watch Wham! videos on VEVO and pick this song. Simon says he loves their version of the song in rehearsal.
Jack provides solid lead vocals. Joel strums guitar and sings back-up. Aside from a few bad notes in the final chorus, this was amazing.
Nicole says they sounded Wham!-azing. Louis loves their personalities and thinks they will have a great future in television. Sharon says the song really suited them. Simon says this was their best week so far.

The Cutkelvins – Killer / Papa Was a Rolling Stone (George Michael)
The Cutkelvins are singing one of George Michael’s greatest covers. They’ve known ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ since they were young. Their late father passed his love for music to his children.
They turned the song into a modern club banger. We see the brothers singing in the background more than in the previous weeks. They join Shareen on the stage. Standing ovation from all 4 judges.
Nicole says they look great as a group together. Louis says this was their best performance yet. Sharon is happy to see all three of them together. Simon says something clicked for them tonight.

Sean & Conor Price – Freedom! ’90 (George Michael)
Sean and Conor have fangirls! They are also active on social media. Simon seems happy with their performance in rehearsal.
Conor sings the lead vocals, Sean plays guitar, sings back-up and raps. They have some great moments in this performance, but at times their vocals got a little lost in the beginning.
Nicole loved their vocals and arrangement. She says they are Irish rock version of Justin Bieber. Louis says they are real, it’s just them and their vocals. Sharon loves their enthusiasm and the performance. Simon says they remind him of his dogs, Squiddly and Diddly.

Kevin Davy White – Fastlove, PT. 1 (George Michael)
He says his performance of ‘Smooth’ last week is who he is as an artist. We see him talk on the phone with his parents in France.
For this performance, he is playing the piano. The arrangement is stripped-down. His vocals are great, even though I would prefer slightly clearer vocals. I think he will be the top vote-getter tonight, the song was staged to be the performance of the night.
Simon agrees this was the performance of the night and a moment. Louis agrees and says he is a decent, nice guy. Sharon calls him and the performance spectacular and perfection. Nicole says this was one of the best performances on the X Factor stage.

The voting is now open and will be open for about 13 minutes. Dermot recites the voting instructions. Time for a recap.

We are back from the break. Dermot says there is 1% difference between the TOP 2 vote getters.

It’s time for for a performance from out musical guest of the night – Harry Styles. He is performing his new single ‘Kiwi’. Boybander turned rock star.

The vote is now closed! Results after the break.

It’s time for the results. Simon and Nicole join their acts on stage.

Tonight’s top vote-getter is Kevin Davy White.

Safe:
Kevin Davy White
The Cutkelvins
Matt Linnen
Rak-Su
Sean & Conor Price

Going home: Jack & Joel

This was their best week performance-wise, but somebody had to go home.

See you tomorrow night.
