X Factor loses 1m viewers (and 5 weeping wannabes) as viewers tire of ad break overload
The X Factor started jettisoning acts from its live show last night.
But producers may be more concerned at the near-million viewers who seem to have left voluntarily.
The slump came after fans were forced to endure advert and promotional trailer breaks that filled more than a fifth of Saturday night’s programme.
The X Factor was watched by a peak audience of 12.7million on Saturday night – a huge drop on the 13.5million who tuned in for the first live show of last year’s series.
There were a total of eight promotional breaks during the two-and-a-half-hour show, which meant viewers had to put up with more than 30 minutes of adverts and trailers between 7.30pm and 10pm.
At some points, viewers saw just seven minutes of live performances before the next four-minute commercial break cut in.

She may have wowed the judges with her first live performance on Saturday night, but it seems that Kitty Brucknell’s fellow contestants don’t feel the same way.
Following last night’s twist – where each judge had to eliminate one of their acts – Jonjo Kerr, who was given the boot by Louis Walsh, hit out at the results.
Speaking mainly about the odd blonde singer, the 27-year-old confirmed the rumours of a rift between her and the other contestants and admitted that he had argued with her.
‘To think that Amelia is no longer in the competition and that Kitty is…that’s just weird, ‘ said Kerr.
‘She should have been the first person to go. I’m not just saying that because I was the first person to go.’

Alexandra Burke has confirmed that she has decided to push back the release of her second album to 2012.
The ‘Start Without You’ star, who previously denied speculation that the collection would not hit shelves before the end of the year, confirmed that she is currently putting the finishing touches to the record.
“It’s going well, ” Burke told Digital Spy. “I’m actually pushing the album to next year. I’ve decided to. I know I had a big old rant on Twitter and was like, ‘I’m not pushing it to next year’, but I don’t want to rush.
“I actually want to have a couple of singles out before I release the album. I’m at the moment considering whether to bring the single out at the end of this year – so we will see what happens.”

The Girls Aloud lovely’s new sound has been fine-tuned by manager Will.i.am and New York-based hip hop producer Alex da Kid. Last night an LA source told us: “Cheryl’s album is finally coming together now and is sounding incredible. It’s completely different to anything she’s bought out before and has much more of an urban vibe than her previous pop-based stuff.
“There’s a lot of heavy beats and it has a real old school flavour to it.

Cheryl Cole has surprised Simon Cowell by flying a birthday banner over his Miami home.
Cheryl Cole – who is believed to have fallen out with Simon Cowell when he fired her from the US X Factor earlier this year – hired a plane trailing a cheeky message over the property he is currently renting in South Beach, Miami, to celebrate Simon’s 52nd birthday.
It read: “Simon Cowell is 52 today! Ha ha ha! Love Cheryl xoxo”
Simon – who famously axed Cheryl from the panel of the talent series after just four auditions – was said to have found the stunt “hilarious”.
A source told the Sunday Mirror: “Cheryl knows he likes to keep his birthday quiet so he thought it was very funny that she was teasing him over it. They had a strong friendship outside of work.
