The tricky second album is the one most acts dread, especially when expectations have reached fever pitch.

Little Mix offered up a very good debut pop album in the form of DNA this time last year, which helped them break through to international adoration.

It seems the windy affects of last week’s ‘hurricane’ are still affecting the British Isles, or more particularly, the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards as Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall saw her skirt blow up in her face.

The popstar was walking the red carpet with bandmates Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock when a breeze caught the hemline of her grey skirt.

Many an X Factor contestant has gone on the show to escape their troubled lives, but this series, none more so than Hannah Barrett.

X Factor rapped over ‘shameless’ plugs: Contestants repeatedly shown using sponsors’ products
The X Factor has been criticised by fans for ‘shamelessly’ plugging sponsors’ products on last Saturday’s programme.

During the two-hour ITV talent show, contestants were repeatedly shown using Samsung products – and on another occasion, a TV catch-up service from another sponsor was featured.

The X Factor is a rightwing Cinderella story that never comes true
The rags-to-riches fairytale of success through hard work helps to keep a recession-damaged audience in its place
Every autumn, to my great delight, The X Factor returns to our TV screens. I am the sort of fan who watches the show religiously, weeps along with the contestants and shouts obscenities when the judges take against my favourites. I love it despite myself.

It’s self-evident that there’s always been a Cinderella element to The X Factor: on one hand it’s a singing competition, and on the other it’s a rags-to-riches tale of ordinary people trying to make it in this cruel world; but never has that narrative been more dominant than the in the last couple of years, where it has virtually eclipsed the singing altogether. Last year’s shows featured montages of contestants working in Asda (Jahmene Douglas) and living in a bedsit (James Arthur), each one consciously positing The X Factor as their only route out of the poverty and mundaneness of modern working-class life.
