FOX president of Alternative and Specials, Rob Wade, told reporters yesterday at the Television Critics Association tour in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Jan 7) that So You Think You Can Dance is still on the bubble. The network is still putting together the summer 2020 schedule.

Wade told reporters that he is confident that the “right shows will come back.”

So You Think You Can Dance, hosted by Cat Deeley, aired its 16th season in June 2019. Wade said the future of the show’s future has not been impacted by the order for The Masked Singer spinoff  The Masked Dancer or Flirty Dancing.

“The Masked Singer and Dancer feel like very different shows to the classic singing and dancing shows so there’s enough room in the schedule. Look at how many police dramas and medical there are. There are certain genres like singing, dancing and cooking where you can have lots of different types of formats,” he told reporters.

If the Masked Dancer is anything like the Ellen Degeneres show spoof, where celebrities don costumes and hit the floor with a goofy freestyle, there should be no overlap at all. However, if the series gets serious and brings on choreographers to prepare the dancers, there could be a conflict. The Masked Dancer would probably bring in more viewers, but artistically, it would be no replacement for SYTYCD even if Travis Wall is on hand to help the celebrities.

Last year, SYTYCD was renewed on January 14. Auditions for the new season kicked off in February. So, the news either way should be forthcoming very soon.
