The Masked Singer Season 2 Finale Recap – A Winner is REVEALED

Tonight, it’s The Masked Singer FINALE!  The last celebrity unmasked will win the GOLDEN MASK. Three masks remain: Fox, Rottweiler, and Flamingo.

Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke sit on the panel, while Nick Cannon hosts and is an executive producer. 

NOTE: The two hour finale kicks off with a clip show featuring The Masked Singer season 2 best moments. The Top 3 will perform for one last time in the 2nd hour before a winner is crowned.

FOX

Clues: “I already won a famous duel” Wayne Brady played Aaron Burr in a Chicago production of Hamilton.

Performance: “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding – Fox is pulling out all the stops. He has an advantage, being a TRIPLE THREAT. Fox is a dancer, actor AND singer. His skills are a distinct advantage in this contest. HE’S EVEN RAPPING! That was pretty amazing. The judges are wowed. Fox becomes very emotional about the competition. “This is all I’ve done my whole life…I’ve made people happy, but haven’t always been happy myself. Aw.” He says the show has made him one happy Fox.

Jenny namechecks Jamie Foxx again Robin thinks it’s Wayne Brady (IT IS WAYNE BRADY) Ken KNOWS EXACTLY WHO THIS IS. He mentions Jamie Foxx again. He’s so sure he’s jumping on the table.

Flamingo

Clues: 

Performance: Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival/Tina Turner – Oh noes. Not this song. It’s so cheesy! She’s dancing though! Flamingo has an unusual voice. It’s deep and raspy. She talked about not liking the sound of her voice. But she’s not generic.

Nicole says she might roll into the winners circle. Aw. Flamingo is crying her eyes out. She was told that she would never amount to anything. “I have truly had the time of my life,” she says. Jenny is sure she is Adrienne Bailon. Nicole agrees. Yes it’s her! Robin thought it was Fantasia. Now he’s changing his mind. He agrees with the girls. The judges were on to Adrienne from the 2nd time she hit the stage! Now, Ken will make a stupid guess. He thinks it’s Fergie. 

Rottweiler:

Clues: “My big break happened when I was just a pup and I never really got a say in defining who I was. I spent years trying to live up to everyone else’s idea of who I should be. And although I’ve fought hard to forge my own path, it’s been impossible to change how people see me,” says Rottweiler. The below clue is hilarious “This dog’s luck wasn’t great against a CAT.” Or KAT or KATHARINE MCPHEE Y’ALL . After Chris Daughtry left American Idol, the band Fuel asked him to be their lead singer. He said no, of course. The night Chris was eliminated, EVERYONE thought it would be Kat instead. The look on her face when Ryan Seacrest called Chris’s name is the stuff of MEMES. 

LOLZ

Performance: Alive by Sia – It’s another great vocal performance by Rottweiler! He’s hands down the best vocalist left in the competition. This is SOOOOO GOOD. No dancing or rapping, though. The lack of fancy stuff could work against him.  Robin says he’s the strongest vocalist on the show. Rottweiler says “I feel like I’ve already one!” Heh. Nicole is sticking with Darren Criss. NOOOOPPPPE. Ken guesses Dave Franco. Jenny guesses Jason Mraz. Close but not quite. Nobody has guessed American Idol alum CHRIS DAUGHTRY. Because that’s who it is.

RESULTS! The audience and judges VOTE. The third place winner of The Masked Singer IS…Flamingo! Last guesses: Jenny, Nicole and Robin guess Adrienne Bailon. Ken confesses he has no idea who it is. He goes back to an earlier guess–Jessica Simpson. And indeed, Flamingo is Adrienne Bailon! Her experience on the show is leading her back to performing again. Currently, Adrienne is a co-host on the afternoon talk show The Real. 

  • Flamingo’s physical clue was a hint to the NAACP image award that Adrienne won for her work on The Real.
  • The Taj Mahal in Flamingo’s package is a clue to where Adrienne filmed “The Cheetah Girls: One World.”
  • The “Couch Time” Flamingo spoke of was a clue to the interview Adrienne did with Ken on “106 & Park” in 2013.

RESULTS! THE WINNER OF THIS SEASON’S GOLDEN MASK IS THE FOX! The Rottweiler is runner up.  Nicole and Robin think Rottweiler is Darren Criss.  Jenny guesses Jason Mraz. Ken is sticking with Dave Franco. NOBODY GUESSES. Rottweiler takes off his mask AND OF COURSE IT’S AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 5 ALUM CHRIS DAUGHTRY!!! Yay. I wish he had won. But runner-up is better than 4th place. Right? Chris did the show because he wanted to challenge himself. He didn’t tell his kids! He can’t wait for them to find out. Unlike most of the previous masked, especially later in th season, NOBODY on the panel guessed Rottweiler’s identity. 

  • The Blue Roses in Rottweiler’s package are a clue to Chris’ favorite tattoo on his left shoulder.
  • The painting of Triumph that Rottweiler presented is a clue to Chris’ work as a comic book artist.
  • The crime scene in Rottweiler’s package hints to Chris’s guest appearance on “CSI:NY”

Last guesses for The Fox: Nicole and Robin guess Wayne Brady. Ken and Jenny guess Jamie Foxx. And of course, The Fox is Wayne Brady!!! Wayne Brady WINS The Masked Singer! Wayne says it was the coolest, weirdest most challenging experience. Nicole says the win couldn’t have gone to a more deserving, talented person. Jenny calls him a true legend and an icon.

  • FUN! In a quick shot of Wayne as Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway, he stands on stage with American Idol season 7 winner David Cook who played Charlie Price. 
  • The many superhero references in FOx’s packages hint to Wayne’s upcoming role on the superhero drama “Black Lightning.”
  • The “Doogie to Doubtfire” clue in Fox’s package is a hint to Wayne’s work acting alongside Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Robin Williams. 
  • The “strange thing to my bark” Fox spoke of in his package is a clue to the stutter he had as a kid.

I’m not surprised Wayne Brady/FOX is the winner and Rottweiler/Chris Daughtry came in 2nd. Think about it. Wayne is not the best singer, but he is the best all around entertainer. He sings, dances and works the stage. Rottweiler is a compelling presence, but he…stands there. Does this sound familiar? It should. Taylor Hicks won American Idol season 6 because of his talent as an all around entertainer, just like Wayne. Back then, I was surprised Chris went out in 4th place, but I thought Taylor had a good shot to win. And he did! I’m not bringing this up to relitigate old fan wars (PLEASE NO). I see an interesting parallels. But at this point, who wins it all isn’t really important. I’m glad Chris made it all the way to the finale so that his fans got as many performances as possible!

Another point: The Masked Singer weaves this weird narrative for all their contestants–that it took putting on a ridiculous costume for a celebrity to FINALLY realize where they belong! To FINALLY believe in themselves. I suppose everyone needs a backstory. Celebrity revelations can’t be TOO personal, or it gives the game away. So it seems like producers have gone down this “The Masked Singer helped me find myself” road. But since nearly everyone has that story, it feels super contrived.

And the WINNER IS FOX who is Wayne Brady
2nd place; Rottweiler is CHRIS DAUGHTRY
3rd place: Flamingo is Adrienne Bailon
