Weekend Ratings Notes: Sound Of Music Movie, SNL Big Ratings Gains

Some ratings tidbits from over the weekend: SNL earned it’s highest rated episode since 2012 and highest rated holiday special since 2004.  The Sound of Music movie which aired on ABC was up 18 percent from the previous year.

Call it the Carrie Underwood effect: ABC’s annual broadcast of the movie musical, The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews notched a 1.3 rating, up 18 percent from last year’s 1.1 adults 18-49 rating. It marked the movie’s most-watched airing in 6 years and highest-rated among young adults in 3 years – since 2007 and 2010, respectively. via TVByTheNumbers

The NBC Live presentation of the Broadway musical, Sound of Music, starring Carrie Underwood earned at 4.6/13 rating in the 18-49 demo and 18.470 million viewers overall. Saturday Night Live, featuring Jimmy Fallon as host and musical guest, Justin Timberlake, averaged a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating in the 25 markets with local people meters, a significant jump from the 2.1 the last Saturday Night Live original earned.

It was the top-rated SNL in both household and key demo categories in nearly two years, since the Jan. 7. 2012 edition hosted by Charles Barkley with musical guest Kelly Clarkson (7.0/18 in metered-market households, 4.1 rating in 18-49 in the Local People Meters), which benefited from a primetime NFL overrun.

Excluding nights of NFL overruns, it’s the top SNL in both household and key demo categories since the season finale on May 21, 2011, hosted by Justin Timberlake and featuring musical guest Lady Gaga (7.0/17 in metered-market households, 4.5 rating in 18-49 in the Local People Meters).

It’s the top-rated Saturday Night Live Christmas edition in nine years in metered-market households, since the Dec. 18, 2004 telecast hosted by Robert De Niro with musical guest Destiny’s Child (6.6/16) and the top Christmas show in the Local People Meters in the six years NBC has tracked that measure (excludes primetime Christmas specials).
