Ahead of last Thursday’s (4/7) American Idol series finale, Lee Dewyze dropped the beautiful new video for his song “Stone.” It’s from the singer’s fifth studio album, Oil & Water, released in February.
The evocative new video was filmed at a summer camp near Big Bear Lake, California, and was directed by Gabriel Younes. In it, an elderly man, played by actor Harwood Gordon, comes to terms with death as he physically and emotionally bathes in a river and buries a live-version of his soul in a freshly dug grave.
The American Idol season 9 winner told Entertainment Tonight that he accomplished exactly what he set out to do. “The music and the lyrics themselves are already so emotional that when the final pieces of the video were put together and I saw it for the first time, I was blown away. It moved me, and that’s what we were all hoping for.”
The director also hopes the film has an emotional impact, “I just hope they feel it in their gut and on the back of their neck when they’re done watching,” Younes said.
Lee made the decision not to appear in the video. “I wanted this video to feel like a short movie with a score, rather than me with my guitar, and I want the audience to make of it what they make of it,” he explained. “The song and the video have meant so many different things to so many people. It’s kind of amazing.”
