Kelly Clarkson has been a fan of singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile for years. Therefore, it makes sense that the American Idol alum and The Voice coach covered her song “The Joke” on a tour stop last week in Detroit, Michigan.
On the Grammys earlier this month, Brandi moved the crowd with a powerful rendition of the song, which won awards for Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots performance. Kelly was honored to pay homage to “The Joke,” as she did in 2012 when she performed a cover of Brandi’s song “Turpentine” in Springfield, Missouri.
