A few of my thoughts…

Best of the night, for me, came from Matt McAndrew and Chris Jamison.  Matt delivered another big emotional performance. I dig the way he plays with dynamics. He can go from 0-60 pretty fast, but I think his phrasing delivers a gut punch. The falsetto part of the song was weakest, so he should probably back off of that.  Performing “Sexual Healing” was a tall order for Chris, but I thought he brought the goods, vocally–even while he was a little hoarse by the end. He does seem awkward on stage (serenading Gwen. Uhm.). If he’s heading towards rhythmic pop, he’s going to have to work on his swagger.

Taylor John Williams did his “thing” to “Royals.” I thought it was a little sleepy–the performance could have used more urgency and conviction. But I’ve come to appreciate how he flips songs.  Gwen is wisely stepping back and allowing him to do his thing.

Good thing Craig Wayne Boyd has amassed a loyal fanbase, because I thought that performance of “Take it Easy” was weak sauce. He actually sounded flat on the chorus, which is unusual for him. Midtempo rockers make lousy competition songs anyway–there’s nowhere to take them. Doesn’t matter. He’s golden.

Church belter, Damien, really upped his game this week.  His rendition of “Somebody Like You” was too ornate for my taste (dial back the runs, dude) but the drama and pure emotion (CRYING!) should have viewers on his side.

Oh Danica Shirey. That performance of “These Dreams” was all kinds of shouty and full of pitch problems. It became increasingly hysterical as the performance progressed. I think she’s in trouble.

Luke Wade started off well enough, with a cool jazzy take on “Holding Back the Tears.” But by mid-song, Luke’s repetitive ad libs began dragging the performance down. Still. WHAT THE HELL. The coaches lobbed softballs all night–including at some performances that were hardly perfect–until Blake and Adam decide to call Luke out for “thinking too much” when he performs. Good point. But the attempt to throw the biggest competition to their own boys under the bus had “douche move” written all over it.

Ryan Sill. Eh. “Open Arms” is way too big a song for him. Ryan CAN sing, but with him, I keep waiting for SOMETHING to happen. Vocally, he needed to belt out that chorus, and he couldn’t do it. There were also the usual pitch problems. Every remaining singer is better than him.

OK. That’s me! Time for some POLLS!
