Tyra Banks Has a Bunch of (NOT) Great Ideas for DWTS Season 30

(ABC/Eric McCandless) TYRA BANKS

With her first season of Dancing with the Stars as new host and executive producer behind her, Tyra Banks has big plans for next season. Never mind that everytime reporters asked a production question regarding season 29, she replied that she had very little input into the decision making.

The former model and America’s Got Talent host told reporters after Monday’s DWTS finale that she’s making sure to jot down all of her ideas for season 30. For instance, Tyra thinks new judge Derek Hough is a keeper. Good thing she approves, amiright? Also, she’s got it all figured out how to keep both Derek AND judge Len Goodman on the show!

“Derek is so fantastic,” Tyra said. “He has such compassion. He gives the most amazing critiques. He’s firm, yet warm. I think he did a really fantastic job. I do miss Len, [but] I feel like there’s a way to have them both be here. I have a little notepad in my phone on how I can make that work, but I’ve got to get that approved by the team.”

Or maybe just expend the judges panel to four? When Derek’s sister Julianne Hough sat in for Len in the past, Len simply returned to the panel when he was ready. Nothing to figure out here, really.

A 30th season retrospective is OK but…

Also, Tyra is all about a 30th season retrospective. But she’s also all about not turning off ALL THOSE NEW FANS THE SHOW HAS NOW (???). I mean what? Ratings started off higher (curiosity maybe?) but eventually settled into a typical pattern. Season 28’s finale earned a 1.1 in the key 18-49 demo while season 29 garnered a 1.0.

“There is something beautiful about a doing a retrospect when you hit a milestone year,” said Tyra. At the same time, there are so many new viewers this season, and a retrospect may not resonate with them. So, if we do one, it would have to be for those diehard fans that have been here forever, but not make it so ‘inside baseball’ where the new people don’t know what the heck is going on.” Or, in other words, never mention that former hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews existed.

If you haven’t figured it out, I am not a fan of Tyra’s awkward live hosting. I remain, and will be forevermore, Team Tom.
