Today’s thread is brought to you by the numbers 6, 9 and 26.
Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” becomes the 1055th song to top the Hot 100 chart and only the 26th to debut there. The last song to debut at the top of the Hot 100 was “Pillowtalk” from X-Factor’s Zayn. Other artists that have debuted songs at the top of the chart were Idol’s Clay Aiken with “This is the Night”, Fantasia with “I Believe”, Carrie Underwood with “Inside Your Heaven” and Taylor Hicks with “Do I Make You Proud”. CStF also tops the Digital Songs chart with 379K beating his previous high-mark of 315K with “Suit and Tie”. This is the best selling week for a single in 2016 and the best since Adele’s “Hello” opened with 480K. It is the best sales week for a male artist since last year’s “See You Again” from Wiz Khalif featuring Charlie Puth move 418K.
CsTF moves into the top 10 of the Radio Songs chart at 9th with 83M audience impressions. It is the first song to move into the top 10 in two weeks since “Hello” did it last year and the first time a male has done it since Michael Jackson way back in 2001 with “You Rock My World”. It has also gotten harder to do now that the radio song charts are so misaligned with sales charts so singles are getting dropped on Fridays.
This is JT’s fifth solo song to top the Hot 100 – he did so previously with “SexyBack”, “My Love”, “What Goes Around Comes Around” and “Give it To Me”. With *NSYNC, he reached the top once with “It’s Gonna Be Me”. CStF is DreamWorks first number one and Max Martin’s 22nd as a song-writer and 20th as a producer. Only two song-writers have more (Paul McCartney with 32 and John Lennon with 26 and only one producer has more – George Martin (the main producer for the Beatles) with 23.
Dropping down a spot is Drake’s “One Dance” (103M AI (+19%), 153K in sales (-4%) and 31.4M in streams (-16%)), up 19 percent), Desiigner’s “Panda”, Lukas Graham’s “7 Years”, Mike Posners “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” and Fifth Harmony’s “Work from Home” to second through sixth. The Chainsmoker’s “Don’t Let Me Down” holds at 7th while Rihanna’s “Work” (featuring Drake) slips down two spots to 8th. Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” is moved back a spot to 9th. Rihanna’s “Needed Me” climbs into the top 10 for her 29th top 10 song.
Did you just successfully sue somebody? You might have if you’ve been to a concert in the last 17 years. As people have been complaining for years, Ticketmaster charges too much. I guess since they are a virtual monopoly, they can’t do that? So, they are giving back $400M in discounts – yes, you have to buy more tickets to get them. If you are one of the 50M people who purchased tickets between Oct 21, 1999 and Feb 27, 2013, check your e-mail for discount codes for future ticket purchases. If people don’t redeem enough of those discount codes by next year, Ticketmaster will give out some free tickets. Details here.
