Farmington, New Mexico welcomed back their hometown girl, Chevel Shepherd winner of The Voice season 15, with a celebration on Saturday (Dec 22).
Local residents greeted Chevel after her plane landed at the local airport. The sixteen year old singer waved from a top a convertible in a procession that made its way to Farmington High School where the Team Kelly Clarkson member is currently a junior.
During the ceremony, Farmington dignitaries honored Chevel as friends and family gave the young country singer a standing ovation.
Sheriff-elect Shane Ferrari told the crowd: “We’re sure proud of Chevel here in San Juan County, aren’t we? Thanks to her, the rest of the country is finally going to know New Mexico is part of the United States.”
State Sen. Bill Sharer, R-Farmington called Shepherd a great ambassador for the city and the state: “I am stunned, I am awestruck by her abilities.”
Farmington Municipal School District Superintendent Eugene Schmidt said: “What a great day for Farmington.”
Large video screens at either end of the basketball also replayed clips of her performances on The Voice this season. She told the audience at the school: “I feel all the support and all the love, so thank you so much.”
Chevel received welcome home gifts and awards presented by Farmington Mayor Nate Duckett and County Commissioner John Beckstead. “When we think about things that bring communities together, Chevel, you are absolutely one of them,” Duckett said.
