The Voice UK: Danny O’Donoghue Blames Winner For Debut Album Failure

The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue totally shaded last year’s winner of The Voice UK, Leanne Mitchell, blaming her for the failure of her debut album on the charts. It only sold 500 copies!

Asked why Leanne’s album only sold 500 copies, Danny responded: “That’s not my fault, that’s not the show’s fault, that’s not the BBC’s fault, that’s just her fault. You can take an artist like that and question their work ethic.”

He continued: “I was told by Tom Jones, and by the label as well, that Leanne just did not want to work as hard as you have to work to be a popstar. She wanted to come on a show and win a singing contest. That’s good for her, because she won the show. But it’s not good for the premise of the show.”

Wow. REALLY? That’s nasty, spreading gossip, and not very kind. Danny is a coach on The Voice UK, along with Jesse J., Tom Jones and Will.i.am. The show has had low ratings this year, forcing the BBC to move it from Saturday to Friday to avoid going head to head with Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent.

After Leanne performed on the show Friday night she tweeted, “Hopefully you guys aren’t actually believing any of the bullshit in the press anymore.. Trust me, it’s ALL LIES!!” The singer took photos with Tom Jones and JesseJ, but curiously not with Danny. Hm.

Wil.i.am had a different take on Leanne’s failure when he spoke to the press last year. He said the wait between her win and her album charting at #134 was the problem. He felt the debut record should be released “directly after they win – I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if the label engaged and surrounded it. I don’t think the rushing happened and if it did, it was too slow. Especially in this day and age when everything changes every 20 seconds on Twitter. You go from something being hot to ‘Oh, it’s not hot anymore’.”

Are any of you UK peeps watching The Voice UK? Is it worth covering?
