The Voice UK 2018 Blind Auditions 3 Recap (VIDEO)

On Saturday (Jan 20) The Voice UK 2018 headed into week 3 of the Blind Auditions on iITV 1! Sir Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson, will.i.am return to the coaches panel. Joining them is newbie the X Factor UK’s Olly Murs. With host Emma Willis.

Sorry, due to circumstances beyond our control, no live blog this week. Do enjoy these videos, however.

Chris James  – 28 – Prince Ali from Aladdin – He’s an audiobook narrator. He’s a very dramatic narrator.  He’s a huge fan of classic rock music. Chris plays in a band now. Very musical theater–really BAD musical theater. The crowd is really into it–Chris is playing the fool up there and they love. it. And Olly Murs hits his button WHYYYYYY. Joke contestants on The Voice. OK then. That was not a good vocal.  Jennifer said it reminded her of her cruise ship days. Is that supposed to be a compliment? Team Olly Picks Chris.

Tai – 18 –  Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield – She’s currently in school and one of five kids. The youngest. Mo says she’s spoiled. Tai has been writing songs since 9 years old. She’s got a nice range, but I’m not sold on her tone, and there are pitch problems galore. Jennifer wonders if there are two people. Yes,. Tai is that all over the place. Nevertheless, Will and Tom turn at the last minute. Jennifer compliments her “sass.” Will likes her falsetto and her “smooth enticing” presence. Tom loves her attitude.  In need of a real beat maker, Tai chooses Team Will

Gemma Kalmakrian – 34 –  Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf – She’s a receptionist and a married mom to a four year old.  Her corporate gig is a drag! She’s 6 foot with red hair, which made it difficult to get cast in West End musicals. She’s got a good voice! But no turns at first. I like her tone a lot. She hits a big crazy note…and still no turns. Sad. She is better than some others who made teams. Offstage, Gemma is tearful.  – No Turns

Ruti Olajugbagbe – 18 – Budapest by George Ezra –  Ruti still lives at home and works a part time job. She plays guitar and admits she uses the instrument to hide behind. Someone’s gonna have to break her of that habit.  Ruti is very very nervous as she hits the stage. Her tone is deep and beautiful, but there’s a lack of confidence, for sure. Tom isn’t sure of the gender, but he hits his button anyway. – Team Tom picks Ruti

The Voice coaches breaking out into “impromptu” performances is a thing that happens every week. This time, Olly Murs sings  “Dance with Me” as the audience goes crazy.

Ant & Ox – 21 – Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 – The duo met at university and started making music together for fun. They have nice forces. The harmonies are a little iffy. I imagine them performing in a bar to a bunch of drunk students. – Wow. Tom, Jennifer and Olly turn at the last minute. REALLY. Jennifer sees potential. She wants to work on their harmonies. Tom’s duo came in second last year! Jhud reminds him she won. Olly used to be in a duo, and he loves their “cheeky fun.” Ant & Ox choose Team Jennifer.

It’s a montage of losers! Mickey Cohen –  She’s nervous. Yet, at the same time she says “Music is the only option for me.”  She’s so nervous, she forgets the words. Poor thing. The next singer, Janel Antoneshia, is pitchy REALLY REALLY pitchy.  The two don’t even get The Voice official videos. Probably for the best.

Mark Asari – 28 – Walking Away by Craig David – He’s also really nervous and has a very noticeable stammer. As a result, he’s very shy. Being able to sing has been freeing. Because singing comes from a different part of the brain that regular speech, he does not stammer when he performs. He’s got a smooth, soulful tone. Nice dynamics, intonation and phrasing.. Will turns right away. It takes a big not to get Tom to push his button.  Jennifer ALMOST pushes. I get why she doesn’t. While the performance was nice, it lacked emotional urgency. He struggles to get through the post performance questions. Finally, he adds a little lilt to his answers, in order to get through it. These are survival tactics he surely learned long ago.  Mark sings his answer. Mark Chooses Team Will

Simon Davies – 30 –  Sign of the Times by Harry Styles –  He lives out in the country with his wife and daughter and teaches special ed classes. His vocal are unusual, ethereal. When he pushes up into his otherworldly falsetto, the coaches go nuts. Will, Jennifer and Olly turn at the same time. Tom finally gives in. A four chair turn for Simon. I like his voice a lot–unique, emotional with an effortless range.  He sings like a pro, really. But he’s apparently just a bumpkin. All the coaches fight hard to win Simon over.  Olly brags that no problem–he could ring up Harry Styles if he wanted. Heh. The crowd shouts for Olly, but Simon chooses Team Tom!
