The Voice Top 10 Performances: Holly Forbes Hopes It Won’t Be Her “Last Dance”

On a week on The Voice that was themed “challenge” week, some singers took big risks. The last time we saw this theme was in Season 14, at the same stage of the competition, for the top 10 performances. That time around, runner-up Britton Buchanan was the only one who flipped a song, taking on Tina Turner. Tonight, we saw a lot of singers switching genres (most to country) or at least attempting a challenge. (Read our recap)

Holly Forbes was one of the contestants who took on a big risk. At the same time, she wanted to have fun this week. She decided to take on disco despite never having sun a disco song. She took on the classic “Last Dance” by Donna Summer, a tune that can serve as a vocal showcase. However, the chorus is repetitive, making it not a great competition song. Still, contestants have covered the disco classic a number of times on singing shows.

Holly’s opening was pleasant. I enjoyed the first ooh that made me jump out of my seat. Slowing it down, allowed Holly to show her tone off and start on a high note before having fun with the performance. Right as the song went up tempo, Holly ripped off her skirt, revealing a sparkly dress. At that point, she really let loose. However, once the song kicked up a notch, she was a bit flat vocally, and lacking some breath control. Nevertheless, the performance was fun, and a refreshing start to the show.

John Legend loved the “soul” she brought to the performance. Kelly Clarkson liked the skirt rip, calling th performance “amazing.” Her coach Ariana Grande called the performance “absolutely incredible” and “insane.”

Holly has been under the weather

Apparently, Holly has been sick, so this could explain why the latter half of her performance was a bit flat. She commented on her performance on Instagram saying, “My voice was gone all day so it was a struggle, but I had so much fun. Thank you for this experience.” I think she would have delivered a better vocal had she not been sick, but she still gave a solid effort.

It is fun to see Holly take risks on the show. She is one who hasn’t played it safe the past two weeks. Will the risk-taking play off? Will voters see this performance as Holly’s “Last Dance, Last Chance” or will she survive the cut and make it to The top 8? I predict Holly will be voted through and will see another results show where she doesn’t have to sing for an instant save.
