I imagine The Voice executives sitting in a room planning out the narrative for the next season. There is ALWAYS a coaches narrative. Whether it’s centered on Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson bringing on the Girl Power (and bonding over being a product of that show that shall not be named) or the bromance between Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, there’s always a storyline that feels like it was cooked up in a writers room.
For season 16 it’s how the veteran coaches are super scared of newbie John Legend and his mighty might EGOT (The acronym denotes winning all the awards–Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.) The coaches are SOOOO scared that they all decide to use their block against the new guy. A decision Adam, Blake and Kelly decided independently, I’m sure. Ha ha. Just kidding. At least The Block, one of The Voice’s most ill-advised twists, is over and done with.
The Voice Season 16 Recap: Blind Auditions 2
When John finally used his block, it was to keep Adam from turning for middling talent Julian King. It felt like John was getting the whole “block” thing out of the way. But probably it was meant to play as payback for Adam blocking HIM at the top of the episode. Narrative!
My favorite singer of the night was Hannah Kay. I do like me some old-school country. So does Blake–I expect he’ll be hanging on to that one.
