The Voice Season 14 Battle Rounds continue tonight with coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys and American Idol OG winner and newbie Kelly Clarkson. Carson Daly returns as host. Join us as we LIVE BLOG every performance.
Each of the coaches will enlist the help of celebrity mentors to ready their teams for battle. Team Adam enlists the help of Julia Michaels, Team Blake joins forces with Trace Adkins, Shawn Mendes lends a hand to Team Alicia and Hailee Steinfeld helps Team Kelly. The winner of the battle moves on to the Knockouts. The loser is eliminated…or stolen by another coach. Each coach will round out their team with two steals.
Amber Saur vs Jorge Eduardo – Team Kelly Clarkson – Starving by Hailee Steinfeld – Download at iTunes
Kelly paired them as they were the most passionate of her singers. Amber has been working as a background singer for artists in Los Angeles. Jorge sang Despacito in the Blind Auditions and once competed on The Voice Mexico. La Voz! Kelly flirted shamelessly with Jorge during his audition, but nobody got mad. This season, the singers watch clips of each other’s auditions in order to comment on the competition. Amber and Jorge are a tiny bit intimidated to be singing mentor Hailee’s song. Jorge suggests singing a bit of it in Spanish. Hailee reminds them not to forget playing to the crowd. Kelly notes Amber has sass for days and suggests Jorge make the song a party. At the studio rehearsal, Kelly is encourages the two like a cheerleader. In past cycles, the coaches didn’t attend these final rehearsals, apparently.
Eduardo is accompanying the duo on guitar. His lower notes are too soft, but his full voice and falsetto are real nice. Amber stands out for me. She’s got an impressive range and expressive phrasing. Oh. They are both singing parts of the song in Spanish. Regardless, she’s the overpowering presence here. It’s maybe not the best song choice for Jorge.
Alicia loves Amber’s energy. Alicia would go with Jorge. Not sure why. Same with Adam. Because he can sing and play guitar at the same time? OK then. Blake goes with Amber. Smart. Kelly calls it a dumb move to put them together. She’s going with her gut. Kelly Chooses Jorge. Thought Hailee was better. But I’m not surprised she’s keeping the good looking Hispanic dude around. Amber is eliminated
Davison vs Reid Umstattd – Team Adam Levine – Love on the Brain by Rihanna – Download at iTunes
Davison is a worship leader and stylist! Reid considers himself a rock soul singer, but believes working with Davison will be a challenge. Taking a break from music to raise a family, Reid bartends at his father-in-law’s restaurant. Davison wants to win Grammy’s just like mentor, Julia Michaels. The singers are perplexed by the song choice. Adam feels it pushes them both, musically. He sees the pairing as a Blues Brothers kind of thing. They need to define their individual personalities, he feels. Julia is impressed that Reid could flip from full to false. But Davison FEELS EVERYTHING she says. At the studio rehearsal, Adam gives them last minute tips. Move around, he says.
I like the song choice for these two–if you don’t listen to the lyrics. It’s a love song, which means they barely look at each other as they sing. They mostly perform in opposite directions! But vocally? It’s a draw. They both have strong soulful voices. I think I prefer Reid, and I’m surprised to come to that conclusion. He’s got tremendous range–his tone and technique are a little more interesting to me.
Blake would go with Davison. Kelly says Davison’s runs are like a “warm biscuit on a Sunday.” The coaches are generally surprised that Reid held his own. Adam Chooses Reid. A little surprised, but maybe not. Adam loves his rock singers. And there aren’t that many this season. On the other hand, there are an abundance of R&B singers. Davison is Eliminated
Montages! We see brief clips of each pairing. Ah Megan Lee–montaged twice. We hardly knew ye.

TIME FOR A STEAL!
Jordyn Simone vs Kelsea Johnson – Team Alicia Keys – Don’t Let Go by En Vogue – Download at iTunes
Jordyn is a 17 year old studying music in high school. Kelsea’s grandfather was in a Mariachi band. He unfortunately passed away from liver cancer before her audition. The girls totally SQUEE when they meet Shawn. The mentor is impressed by Jordyn’s maturity and thinks Kelsea needs to be a megastar. Alicia suggests they dial back the beginning of the song–create some dynamics. At the studio rehearsal, Alicia changes some of the staging in order to help pace the song. She’s worried that Kelsea will lose her voice.
These singers have distinct tones. Kelsea is raspy and urgent. Yeah, she’s losing her voice. But it’s working for her! Jordyn’s husky alto is lush and full. Both are so soulful. Good thing one will get stolen. Both are so good.
“What’s it gonna be,” insists Adam. Oh har har. He’d “probably” go with Jordyn. Blake loves Kelsea’s raspy tone. Kelly might go with Kelsea, she says, but both are good! Alicia Chooses Kelsea Adam and Kelly steal Jordyn Neither turned for her in the Blinds. Kelly does a happy dance. She reminds Jordyn that she won a competition at her age. Blake is doing Billy Idol imitations. NOT SURE WHY. Jordyn Chooses Adam! She says Adam explicitly saying he’d choose her in the battle was the reason.
