The Voice: Josh Kaufman Dishes New Album (VIDEO)

Yahoo music’s Lyndsey Parker, sat down with The Voice 6 winner, Josh Kaufman, to chat about The Voice tour, his debut album, working with coach Usher, and more.

Recording of his debut album hadn’t begun at the time of the interview–Josh and his fellow The Voice alums were in Los Angeles on The Voice tour–but the label had been in touch with him about the direction the album might take.

The focus at the moment is releasing a first single, says Josh, which they didn’t have time to get together before the tour kicked off 3 weeks after he won the crown.

Once the tour is over, Josh and the label will begin the process of getting some songs together and “seeing what works the best. What I like–what they like.”

While his pre-Voice band, New Etiquette brought the funk, blues and jazz, Josh probably won’t go full on with those influences on the new record.  “Just because there’s not as much of a market for that, obviously,” he explained, “But I definitely will include those elements.”

“I love what…Pharrell–the production that he does–he takes those classic soul sounds. but then modernizes them…and makes them sound like something that is relevant to today.”

Presently in his late 30s, how does he see his musical sensibility, fitting into the current pop music landscape? “I think there’s definitely a place for it, as far as the style thing. You have guys like Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and Bruno Mars taking those classic soul sounds and bringing them up to date. So I think there’s a precedent for that.”

Josh would love to collaborate with Pharrell. He’d also like to team up with Tessanne to do some co-writing.
