On yesterday’s CBS The Talk Gwen Stefani said that when NBC asked her to return to The Voice as Adam Levine’s replacement, it came as “a shock.”
“I haven’t talked about it yet,” Gwen admitted, “because it was such a shock. I wanted to come back so bad. I mean, the show is so fun.” She continued, “I’m happy for Adam, because he’s been doing it 16 seasons… He has his baby. He’s going to be able to go on tour and do music in a different kind of way. It’s exciting for me though.”
Adam Levine suddenly announced he was leaving The Voice after 16 seasons. This, after NBC announced he and the rest of the panel–Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend–would be returning.

Gwen, who appeared on three previous seasons of The Voice including season 7, 9 and 12, said that Adam helped her decide to join the show when NBC contacted her the first time.
“Adam’s actually the first person to reach out to me when they were trying to pitch me the show,” she said. “He texted me out of nowhere, and I didn’t even really know him. To think that he’s not going to be there is bittersweet. And plus, like, being between him and Blake [Shelton], the amount of laughter, I would have to stop and massage my face, because it would hurt.”
Gwen said working with boyfriend Blake will be “fun” and “exciting.”
“I mean, Blake’s my best friend, so I get to hang out with him at work,” Gwen gushed.
As far as Kelly is concerned, Gwen said, “I’ve known her since I’ve known Blake, and she’s been at the house with the babies…it’s all in the family. It’s going to be really comfortable.” While she doesn’t know John, she loves his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
Will Gwen be bribing artists with team jackets like Kelly did? “I feel like I did that already…” Oh. That sounds almost like shade! Heh. “I’m not very competitive, but I’m going to pretend like I am for the show.”
“Every season that I’ve been back, it’s been a shock,” Gwen told E News in a recent interview, “’cause they kind of wait till the last minute [to tell you]. I guess they really want you to be like, ‘Please, take me.'”
“I feel a little overwhelmed in so many different ways,” she added, “‘Cause I haven’t done it in a while [and] because Adam’s not gonna be there.”
