Something I’d first like to note about Cam Anthony, the 19-year-old standout from Philly whose Blind Audition aired on The Voice season 20 premiere Monday night (Mar 1)  is his enunciation.

The singer enunciations each word clearly and puts so much feeling into his singing. Apparently, he has had some technical training. His low notes are another strength of his. A lot of his low notes are as clear as bell. If I’m being honest, I think Cam deserved turns from the coaches prior to him showing off his upper register. The song choice, “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith, was a bit stale as this song has been done quite a bit on these shows. But nevertheless, Cam impressed.

Blake Shelton makes big promises

Nick Jonas turns first, blocking John Legend, which is a smart move as Cam leans R & B which is John’s expertise. John looks sad and says, “he blocked me.” The coaches go at Nick, with even Kelly Clarkson, who did not turn, saying “Nick stole that chance from you!” Blake Shelton’s approach winning Cam over is to tell the singer that he won’t pick anyone to be on his team like him. Smart move by Blake as Cam knows that this betters his chance on the show. I find it a bit ironic that Kelly says “that’s a big promise” when she has made some big promises before and not kept them. Nick goes with a family approach, but Blake just tries to get the mother on his side. Cam ultimately chooses Blake.

Picking Blake is interesting for sure. I think it was the right pick and will increase Cam’s chances on the show. I’m assuming Cam will be making most of the calls on song choice and who knows, maybe he will delve into a country ballad at some point.

Cam is not a no-name

He was on the Ellen Show when he was 12, and he also won Showtime at the Apollo a few years ago with this performance. His voice has gotten deeper since he won Showtime. He’s got stage presence and has those runs down. His control is impressive. I bet you money that he would have chosen John had he had the chance. Here’s his cover of John Legend and Jhene Aiko’s “U Move, I Move.” Watch it here.  The combo of Blake and Cam shall be interesting and something to watch in future episodes.
