The Voice Blind Audition: Dana Monique can SING.
Dana Monique, 41-year-old singer from Houston has spent most of her career as a backup and cruise ship singer, but she’s ready to step out into the limelight and take the spotlight for herself.
During her The Voice season 20 Blind Audition, she turned coach Nick Jonas just 10 seconds in. John Legend turned later into the audition. First impressions are key, and she did start VERY STRONG. As it went on, I was a bit bored. This isn’t the best Aretha song to audition with, as it is a bit campy. And it is more of a dance soul track. She did show off her range later in the song though, which was quite impressive. Nick notes this “power” as soon as she’s done singing.
African American Female Powerhouses have had a tough time on The Voice, so it’ll be interesting to see if Dana is any different. I totally see the Chaka Khan vibe in Dana, as she names “Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Tina Turner” as influences. Check out her cover of Ain’t Nobody by Chaka Khan HERE. Dana is a ringer. I think if she’s smart, she will mix in some ballads as these oldie dance hits might make her too “dated” sounding.
Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton wish they would’ve turned, but they (especially Kelly) did not want to lose to John. Blake tries to use reverse psychology, saying Dana would pick John for sure. Legend busts out a little tune, singing some Chaka to woo her. But Nick hits home that he turned really quickly.
Dana ultimately chooses Nick. This season is not about the obvious choice, and Blake is really hitting that point home, even if he doesn’t turn. Nick scored big with Dana. Even if she does not win, she has strong enough vocals that she should make the top 10 at least. To wrap up this little writeup, here’s a little cover from Dana’s Instagram of Aretha Franklin’s Chain of Fools from a rehearsal.
