The Voice 27 Blind Auditions: Jay Ammo Brings His “A” Game with “The A Team”

The Voice Blind Auditions for season 27 came to a close on Monday night (March 3). It wasn’t long before the coaches’ teams filled up, but each coach was still able to turn for the first audition of the night, Jay Ammo, who was the final 4 chair turn of the season. (Read our Recap)

Viewers heard a quick voiceover of the singer prior to him opening the song as the show built up suspense. We learn more about Jay after his audition. He is a 28-year-old who is originally from Georgetown, Guyana, but now lives in Clarksville, Tennessee. The artist reveled that Jay Ammo is a stage name, which alludes to his military background. He changed it due to people unable to pronounce his actual last name.

He recalled growing up with many different cultures in Guyana, and says his parents tried to make sure he and his sister had a good life. But “it’s hard to pursue music as a career there,” he explained. He moved here to the USA to pursue music and to be a “hero” as he was deployed in Afghanistan. His job was in direct fire. It teaches you “mental stillness,” he said, as it is scary. He has been pursuing music since 2022 when he got out of the military.

“You really kept the integrity of that song, but also gave just the right amount of you in it”

For his audition, he sings “The A Team” by Ed Sheeran. His tone has a nice folk pop sound, dreamy and light, and beautifully phrased. The audition doesn’t showcase much range, but it’s artistic and effective. He hits a few nice falsetto at the end which hints that maybe Jay has more than what he initially showed. The singer quickly got John Legend to turn, followed by Adam Levine and then Kelsea Ballerini. He finally got Michael Bublé to turn towards the end.

John mentioned he has played in Guyana and asked Jay if he was at his show. Jay admitted he drove by but was too poor to attend. John described Jay’s voice as “kind of floating through the room,” and he noticed some Afrobeat influences. Adam called Jay’s voice “ethereal,” saying he has a “unique window” within the competition. Kelsea added, “you really kept the integrity of that song, but also gave just the right amount of you in it.” She continued by asking what a country singer like her may have to offer, and Jay told her he has covered her song “Better Luck Next Time.” Michael felt Jay had some pitch issues early on, but noted Jay’s storytelling ability.

Jay went with Team Legend

Ultimately, Jay went with Team Legend, making Jay the second to last member on John’s team.

Jay’s audition was one of the best of the night, but it was Team Kelsea who truly won big on the final episode of the Blinds as she won over Alanna Lynise who gave one of the best vocal performances on “Issues” on what would have been a 4 chair turn audition if John’s team wasn’t full (Watch her Audition). She also got another strong contender in Simone Marijic who showcased storytelling abilities on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Favorite Crime.” Notably, each coach was able to pick up big contenders, but not Michael, who failed to earn any 3-chair or 4-chair turning singers.
