The Voice 26 Contestant Preview (15 Singers to Watch!)
The show opens with the coaches performing a cover of The Eagles’ “Heartache Tonight.”
Adam Bohanan vs Kevin James Graham – Lose Control by Teddy Swims- Team Reba
Adam lived in England with his mother for a while. It’s where he learned about music culture. He sings what Reba calls “Dirty Soul.” Kevin is classic hard rock singer who can hit incredible high notes. Snoop thought he was a woman. Kevin notes the song is out of his wheelhouse (It’s totally in Adam’s). On the other hand, Adam is intimidated by Kevin’s range. Reba gives him advice on making eye contact with the audience.
Kevin has a bigger range, but Adam’s bluesy tone cuts through. But both singers bring something great to the performance. Between the two, Adam is a contemporary sounding soul singer, while Kevin harkens back to 70s and 80s classic rock. However, he’s adapting to this song pretty well!
Gwen mentions that both singers are one-chair turns. “That was so good. The harmonies together were perfect.” But she thinks Adam won the battle. Michael would choose Kevin, but he thinks Reba should choose Adam. Snoop felt Adam was close to Teddy, but Kevin put his own twist on it. He likes Kevin’s showbusiness flair. Again, Snoop won’t pick a winner. Reba picks Adam. Kevin is eliminated.
ChrisDeo vs MisterMoon – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King – Team Snoop
MisterMoon is a duo made up of friends. ChrisDeo is a solo. He believes they’ll harmonize well together. During the mentoring session it was ChrisDeo’s 17th birthday. She seems very young. Hm. Snoop attributes “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” to Amy Winehouse. Please tell me that’s the only version he knows. He calls it an Amy song TWICE.(Carole King wrote and recorded it, the Sherels had a it with it). The duo sins folk rock in Nashville. ChrisDeo works in a coffee shop. Snoop coaches them through not staying inside their heads.
MisterMoon are older and polished singers compared to ChrisDeo. However, the latter has a power to her voice that still needs work, but has potential. She’s the strongest of the three singers when it comes to dynamics. Their harmonies are the best part of the performance.
Reba loved three part harmony. She notes that ChrisDeo had a rocky start, but improved. But she’d pick her because she’s powerful. ChrisDeo is crying again. Michael loved the harmony. He wants to build a trio. He thinks having a duo is a huge advantage. Gwen appreciates the duo’s confidence, but she loves ChrisDeo’s tone. “Confidence is key, says Snoop.” He heard nervousness from all three, but calls them all superstars. Snoop picks ChrisDeo (she’s crying of course) MisterMoon is eliminated. Snoop thanks them for comforting and helping ChrisDeo.
Edward Preble vs Mark Shiiba – What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong – Team Buble
Mark, a roots/folk singer was Michael’s Coach Replay pick. Edward is a standards singer with the fedora and everything. It’s hard to know how much of Edward’s schtick is completely put on. Does he sit around at home acting like that? Having said that, Edward studies music and was the best of the standards singer. On the other had, Mark has a really unique sound. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea. He wants Mark to feel the song, not just sing it. Michael demonstrates for him. This is much more in Edward’s wheelhouse.
While Edward has a beautiful tone and knows his way around a standard, he hides behind a rat pack trope. Mark’s voice isn’t as objectively beautiful, but he’s authentic and heartfelt. This song was out of his wheelhouse, but he did his thing with it.
Snoop thinks that Shiiba would be a challenging pick if Michael made it. Reba notes how different the two singers are, but she feels it worked. She’s pick Mark. Gwen calls Mark captivating, but she is mesmerised by Edward. She’d lean towards the latter. He sensed nerves from Edward (yes). He feels Mark delivered as a storyteller. Michael picks Edward, Mark is eliminated. Boo. It’s too bad nobody stole him. Edward was the inevitable pick, I guess.
Torion Sellers vs Jeremy Beloate – Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars – Team Buble
In this montaged performance, Micheal picks Jeremy, Torion is eliminated. Jeremy has a unique sound that could take him a long way in the competition, Michael says afterward.
Suede Lacy vs Torre Blake – What I Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell – Team Snoop
Another montaged performance has Snoop saying he sees potential in both singers, but Snoop picks Torre, Suede is eliminated
Frankie Torres vs Gabrielle Zabosky – Never Tear Us Apart by INXS – Team Gwen
Gabrielle, who got a 4-chair turn, never heard of the song pick before but loved it when she heard it. She and Frankie became friendly during the blinds. Gwen found a soulful arrangement of the song she feels suits the pair. Gwen advises Frankie no rely on her growls. She looking for a gritty, emotional performance. Gwen seems particularly enamored of Gabrielle, but thinks she gets in her own way at times.
Both singers are powerhouses, but Gabrielle performs with an intense charisma. Frankie has her moments, and good for her not being completely buried by Gabrielle’s bright light.
Michael loved the bluesy arrangement and felt like it complimented both their voices. He gives Frankie props for her bravery holding her own against the forceful Gabrielle, but also allowing her to have her moments. He would lean toward Gabrielle. Snoop appreciated that they didn’t try to outdo each other. Reba didn’t know the song, but now she loves it. She loved Gabrielle’s high parts. She’d choose her. Frankie admitted she was nervous, but Gwen couldn’t tell. Gabrielle was nervous too. But unsurprisingly, Gwen picks Gabrielle. but Reba steals Frankie. That happened at the very last second.
