The last time Gwen Stefani served as a coach on The Voice she WON with young pop singer, Carter Rubin. Now, nearly a year after he took the crown in December 2020, Carter has released his debut single, “Horoscope.”
The timing of the single coincides with Carter’s Libra birthday on October 11. On Instagram, he asked fans to connect the stars of Libra to unlock the single’s new artwork! A team of songwriters penned the tune including Aaron Accetta, Carter Rubin, Jackson Hoffman, Julia Pernicone, Ryder Stuart and Shep Goodman.
Gwen congratulated her former Team member on social media. “I am SO proud of @carterjrubin
for releasing his new song AND video #horosope!!” Gwen wrote. “Go check it out! Sending you love Carter. #forevercoach.”
And here’s a rare thing these days for a The Voice winner. Carter actually released the song on Republic Records. Yes, on paper, the winner of The Voice wins a record contract along with $100K. But in recent seasons, winners have gone indie immediately after leaving the show. The last time a winner released post show music on Republic was Chloe Kohanski who won season 13 in December 2017. She released a single in 2018 and an EP in 2019. She released new music this week, too, but independently.
Meanwhile, Carter thanks everyone who helped with the record. “horoscope is out everywhere now,” he writes on Instagram. i can’t even begin to grasp that this is real life. thank u to my amazing team at @republicrecords for helping so immensely to bring my new era to life…”
On The Voice, fifteen year old Carter impressed fans with covers of Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go,” “You Say” by Lauren Daigle and “Hero” by Mariah Carey. His backstory involved a brother with autism with whom he had a close relationship. Additionally, Carter had the distinction of being the youngest male winner and the second youngest winner overall in The Voice history. Carter hails from Shoreham, New York.
