Johnny Gates – 31 – Providence Rhode Island – Maggie May by Rod Stewart – Click for Video Preview. He’s from a super Italian family. At one point, he joined a band. Interestingly, he was inspired by Taylor Swift. The band found her producer, moved to Nashville and had a showcase. Things eventually fell apart, and he ended up in LA. The band opened for Rod Stewart on tour. Now, the band is on hiatus and he’s auditioning for The Voice. He’s got a real retro vibe going. His rock voice is reasonate. Not gruff or growly–the tone is clear as a bell. He can hit some high notes too. Without sounding flat! He gets turns from Blake, Gwen and Alicia. Oddly–not from Adam. Maybe he doesn’t want another rocker on his team. Alicia calls his tone “outrageous.” She loves his range. Gwen compliments his “presence.” Blake promises to keep Johnny in a rock lane. He compares him to Mick Jagger. Gwen offers her experience in a Ska band. Johnny Chooses Gwen. I thought he would! –  Download at iTunes

Malik Davage – 23 – Washington DC –  Sure Thing by Miguel – He grew up in a tough neighborhood. His father is currently in jail. He works in a clothing store as a day job. He’s got a “beautiful baby girl.” Everything he does is for her. He cries as he talks about his family. He’s smooth and sexy. His adlibs are effortless. Really nice tone too. Adam turns right away.   Malik begins crying and Gwen consoles him. Adam gives him a big hug. “Sit in my chair!” Adam instructs. Malik explains how he’s trying to do the best for his daughter. The little cutie comes out on stage and Malik takes her in his arms. His mother accosts Adam and it’s pretty funny. Adam promises to help him get better. Alicia didn’t turn–she wasn’t feeling any originality. And that’s it…Malik is on Team Adam – Download at iTunes

Lauryn Judd – 16 – Utah – Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper – She’s learned a lot about singing in her high school choir class. When she was 11 she joined a musical theater group. She’s going to sing a “mellow, acoustic” arrangement of the song. Her head  voice is a little chimpmunky. But when she sings in her chest voice–man she really opens up. Gwen, Alicia and Blake turn their chairs. Even Alicia thought she heard two voices! Alicia thinks she’s a “really special artist.” Lauryn Chooses Team Alicia  – Download at iTunes

Paul Adrian – 20 – Irving Texas – I’ve Got a Woman by Ray Charles – He works as a bell hop in a Dallas hotel. His dad was a huge influence on his music. Dad did two tours in Iraq. He died there. He tears up talking about the loss of his father. Music really helps with his emotions. He would love to work with Adam! His dad loved soul music, which is why he chooses a Ray Charles song. His vocal is breathy, with pitch problems. It’s no surprise he gets no turns. Gwen thought he sounded way older. She thought his voice became wobbly. Adam suggests he not dance next time. Adam and Blake suggest he come back. – No Turns

Caroline Sky – 16 – San Anselmo California – Will You Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King – Her family had a band called “Rockin’ Robin.” She’s been playing gigs for a long time. Carole King is one of her idols. She hopes the coaches hear soul and “a lot of emotion.”  Caroline has a great tone, and impecable control. Maybe TOO much control–she over-enunciates her words a little. But overall, she has a beautiful instrument. Her head voice is lovely. Blake and Gwen both hit their buttons. Gwen loved her “control and patience,” and noted her lack of nerves. “Blake has never lived your dream the way I have lived my dream…I need somebody like you on my team.” Blake reminds her that he’s won a lot with young girls. “You help me live the girl dream!” Caroline Chooses Team Gwen –  Download at iTunes

Josh Hoyer – 40 – Lincoln Nebraska –  Oh Girl by the Chi Lites – He’s a family man, with two little girls. He bartends and plays music. He was in a band that traveled accross the country. Financially, it’s been tough to manage a music career. He’s hoping that The Voice takes him to the next level. He sings smooth blue eyed soul. Interesting he plucked this semi-obscure gem from the 70’s to perform. Blake and Gwen stare each other down. They both push their buttons. Adam says he has a lot of “soulful wisdom” in his voice. Gwen says she has no one like him on her team. Blake urges him to join the “winning team.” There’s nobody like you on the SHOW says Blake. His influences are “Otis and Curtis.” Gwen says she understands what it’s like to be a working parent. But Josh Chooses Team BlakeDownload at iTunes
