The Voice 10 Recap Knockouts Part 3

The Voice Knockouts conclude tonight and the Top 20 will be revealed.

Miley Cyrus once again joins coaches Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera to prepare more singers to face off in a battle-like round. Pairs from the same team will face off against each other with solo performances of their own choosing. The coaches pick the singer who will advance to the Top 20 Live Playoffs, but each coach can steal ONE eliminated singer.

For winning singer’s song choices, click for ALL of tonight’s Song Spoilers. Beware, ONLY songs by Knockout winners and stolen contestants are uploaded to iTunes. Spoilery!

Blake Shelton has the last remaining steal. Tomorrow night (Tuesday) is a one hour clip show, which reviews the competition so far. Next Monday (April 11) the THREE DAY Live Playoffs begin.  Click for the FULL Season 10 schedule.

Brian Nhira vs Nate Butler – Team Adam Levine

Brian Nhira – Grenade by Bruno Mars – Mentor session: Adam is amazed at how good Brian is.  “He’s special,” Adam says Pharrell is going to cry that he gave him up. Performance: Brian’s performance is impassioned, which is half the battle with this song. His pitch is on point and the ad libs and growls are well placed. It’s an effortless performance from Brian. – Download from iTunes

Nate Butler – Let’s Stay Together by Al Green –  Miley says he can’t let the legends do the work for him. Bring his own personality into the performance. Dig in more, develop a vibe, says Adam. Performance: Hm. I’m not buying the sexy vibe from this guy.  Some of the phrasing and the way he pronounces words is distracting and a little disjointed. Brian CLEARLY won that knockout.

Results:  Blake says Brian poured gasoline on the stage and dropped a match on it, but Nate was bad ass. He liked Nate’s smooth falsetto. Christina liked Brian’s intensity and Nate did a nice job with his flow and adlibs. Pharrell complimented Nate on his soulfulness. Pharrell calls his ex team member, Brian, incredible. Adam is sure Al Greene would compliment Nate. Adam chooses Brian. Nate is eliminated.

Brittany Kennell vs Mary Sarah – Team Blake Shelton

Mary Sarah – You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man) by Loretta Lynn – Mentoring session: Miley reminisces how she and her mom always sang this song. Blake thinks Mary is a threat to everyone on the team. Miley encourages her to use her growl. Performance: Mary is a total blast from the past. She does the vintage stuff really well. She reminds me a little of Kellie Pickler–less personality, but a better vocalist. Blake loves these vintage types. No way he doesn’t pick her. – Download from iTunes

Brittany Kennell – You’re Still the One by Shania Twain – Mentoring Session: She sang Sheryl Crow in the blinds and was so good. I love her burnished alto. Blake thinks Brittany should dial her vibrato back in spots. Miley advises her to find a place where she can insert some big notes. She demonstrates. Performance: Hm. This is NOT the right song for Brittany. She sounds flat both sonically and emotionally. The performance goes nowhere. Rather than mainstream country, Brittany could have showcased that wonderful tone by mining some rootsy rock or folk.

Results: Christina thought it was a well matched pair, but  Mary was perfect. She wanted more of a punch from Brittany. Pharrell felt Brittany was emotionally flat, while Mary had sass. Adam liked Brittany’s subtly but felt she was overpowered by Mary. Blake chooses Mary. Brittany is eliminated.

Bryan Bautista vs Trey O’Dell – Team Christina Aguilera

Bryan Bautista – Sorry by Justin Bieber – Mentor session –  He wants to be known as a contemporary singer with soul. He adds some reggae elements to this popular hit song. Interesting. Christina and Miley don’t have much advice for him, except to save some of the tricks. Christina suggests he work his falsetto in somewhere. Performance:  This performance is TERRIFIC. Bryan is sexy, soulful, charismatic and  brings his own twist to the song.  We have a contender, people.  Bryan is demonstrating his potential to be a contemporary artist. He sneaks in that falsetto and it’s FINE. – Download from iTunes

Trey O’Dell – I Lived by OneRepublic  – Mentoring session: He’s a steal from Team Blake.   Miley suggests a mic stand, in order to give him a chance to work the stage. Performance: There are so many pitch problems here. So many.  He’s so nervous, he never really took control of the performance. Bryan basically kicked his ass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLIjUKsiRno

Results: Pharrell says Bryan entertained on all levels. He notices Trey’s pitchy spots but feels some moments were technically impressive. Adam is impressed with Bryan’s range. He comforts Trey–Pitch problems will go away with more experience. Even though Trey was once on his team, he has to give the round to Bryan. Christina thought Trey’s performance improved as it went, but it was all praise for Bryan. Christina chooses Bryan. Trey is Eliminated.

Abby Celso vs Caity Peters – Team Pharrell Williams

Abby Celso – Rich Girl by Hall & Oates –   Mentor session: Pharrell isn’t sold on her song choice. But after he hears her rendition, he’s impressed.  Too many runs, though. Make them into moments, do less they advise her. “Don’t be so “frolicy” over what you are trying to say,” says Miley. Performance: Pharrell was right. This is a weird song choice. She’s got a big voice, but this song doesn’t showcase it. Her stage presence needs some work too. She’s very strident on the top notes. She bellows the last note.

Caity Peters – Leave Your Lover by Sam Smith – Mentor session: She was a four-chair turn. Caity admits the song challenges her vocally. Pharrell thinks it’s a great song choice. Caity is a perfectionist, calling out her own flaws. Miley gives her some tips on how to phrase the song, especially to add some high notes to round out her naturally low tone. Performance: Abby’s got a “I’m screwed” look on her face as Caity sings.  She barely moves a muscle yet manages to keep the audience enthralled. She’s rooted to the stage floor, but solid and completely consumed by the song. It is a lovely, emotional and moving performance. Perfect.

Results: Adam notes Abby’s confidence, but wanted more dynamic shift. He likes the different colors Caity brings.  Blake makes fun of Adam’s pink hair before saying both singers have great lower registers. Christina also feels Abby could have delivered more dynamic range. She goes with Caity. Pharrell felt Caity emoted a lot, but Abby really owned the stage. – Pharrell chooses Caity. Abby is eliminated.

Pharrell’s team is complete!

Jessica Crosbie vs Laith Al-Saadi – Team Adam Levine

Laith Al-Saadi– In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel – It’s one of Adam’s favorite songs. Laith wants to show a different side of his voice. Adam thinks he should sing it in the original higher key. The strain is what brings the passion. “Pull the dirt out of the song,” says Adam. Performance:  I understand why Laith wanted to lower the key. It sounds uncomfortable in spots. But overall, it works. Laith is experienced enough to take suggestions and only incorporate what works for him. The chorus is where he really brings passion and sells the performance. That’s not an easy song to cover, and Laith pulled it off. – Download from iTunes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihyvCqqHlXI

Jessica Crosbie – Wake Me Up by Avicii – Mentoring Session: Adam stole her from Team Pharrell.  Don’t rely so much on a growl, Adam says.  Miley tells her to be more passionate and confesses later she isn’t seeing anything in Jessica that makes her stand out. The singer needs a lot of coaching. Performance: This is better than that crazy Coldplay cover she did earlier in the competition. But she needed to bring it on the choruses. It is like she’s holding back and/or she doesn’t have the vocal ability to ramp it up. A beautiful tone isn’t enough.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR6TIFXsWxY

Results: Blake says Laith steamrolled the vocals. Pharrell didn’t think Laith reached the soaring heights he needed (I DISAGREE).  He thought Jessica showed more range (WHAT?). Christina wasn’t crazy about Laith either. Adam chooses Laith Jessica is Eliminated

Caroline Burns Vs Katherine Ho – Team Adam – MONTAGED! Caroline sang “Human” by Christina Perri. WHO KNOWS what Katherine sang. We don’t hear a note. Also: Katherine was TRIPLE MONTAGED, in other words, all of her Voice performances–Blind Audition, Battle Round and Knockout Round–were montaged. Poor thing.  Adam chooses Caroline Katherine is Eliminated. – Download from iTunes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpLfWC7kLoY

Adam’s Team is complete!

We know Blake will steal one of the singers in this final matchup.

Joe Maye vs Kata Hay – Team Christina Aguilera

Joe Maye –  Earned It by The Weeknd –  Mentoring session: Miley thinks he does a good job of making the song his own. Christina helps him with his falsettos. She hopes Joe “gets wrapped in the moment.” She suggests he drop down to one knee. Performance: He sang “I Put a Spell on You.” Dude is drama to a T. He lacks control–the timing in the beginning of the song was really off. He brings on the mega drama on the chorus, getting down on his knee like Christina suggests. It’s over the top, but without any real passion.  – Download from iTunes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jnd3vxnOVDk

Kata Hay – Why Haven’t I Heard From You by Reba McEntire – Mentoring session: Christina thought she was ROARING on that. Miley thinks she’d be “super useful” for country, whatever that means. Both encourage Kata to take the passion as far as she can. They suggest she stop playing her guitar part way through the song, freeing her up to dig into the performance. I can see why Kata is facing off against Joe. It’s like the battle of the crazies. Who will completely lose their minds first? Performance: This is her best performance so far. Her Blind and Battle auditions were both super pitchy and out of control. She’s brings the big, brassy vocal, but manages to stay mostly in tune this time. She manages more vocal control but without reigning her personality in. – Download from iTunes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aER_XWCpF40

Results: Pharrell thought they both fought for a spot. Kata was a big surprise for Adam.  Blake says Kata’s personality fills the room. Joe also has a great voice and personality. Christina feels both singers bring showmanship. She forgives Joe’s issues on the verse, because he brought it in the end. But Christina chooses Kata, Blake Steals Joe  Kata deserved to win that knockout. Joe needs work, but Blake is willing to work with him.
