The Masked Singer 8 Recap: Andrew Lloyd Webber Night!

CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

The Masked Singer season 8 continues with Nick Cannon as host, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger on the judges panel.

A new format means only ONE mask survives every week. At the end of three rounds, three celebrities will compete in the semi-finals for a chance to compete in the finale.

Tonight, FOX will air the Andrew Lloyd Webber themed episode that was scheduled for last week. A rain delay pushed the MLB playoff game into prime time, effectively canceling the epsidode.

Tonight, THREE NEW celebrity masks take the stage. Only one will be the King/Queen of Masked Singer. TWO will be eliminated. Tonight’s masks are: Maize, Mermaid and Robo Girl.

The iconic composer will be on hand to sit on the panel.

The show opens with Nicole Scherzinger singing “Memory” from Cats. Just a little snip! Andrew Lloyd Webber gets the big Phantom of the Opera entrance with pyro and ominous music. Ken enters wearing a cape and a phantom mask. He scares Andrew with his horrible voice.

Maize

Clues: It’s a big ole CORN COB. A musical about Maize. She makes references to cornfields, moving to the big city New York City. BRAVO. “I’m a smash hit waiting to happen.”

Performance: Heaven on Their Minds From Jesus Christ Superstar – During the clues, Maize seemed to be a woman. But probably not? The singing voice is theatrical and masculine. Maize has got a big voice, and may actually be a theatrical person. On stage Clue: “Frozen” is a clue. Nicole guesses Jonathan Groff. No. Robin guesses Nathan Lane. Jenny guesses. Mario Cantone.

Mermaid

Clues: There’s a harp. She says “Simply the best.” She had a horrible accident. She turned her anguish into an anthem. She performed for royalty. “I’m just as big a legend as you are Lloyd Webber.”

Performance: Any Dream Will Do from Joseph – She sounds like an older diva. Like I SHOULD know this voice. She sings in a deep alto. This is a mediocre song from one of Lloyd Webber’s middling productions. Stage clue: “Mermaid makes waves, enters Library of Congress Forever.” Andrew guesses Gloria Estefan. Doesn’t sound like her. Ken guesses Cher. Andrew tells him he’s “incredibly wrong.” And he is! Jenny guesses Roberta Flack. Hm. Robin guesses Gloria Gaynor

Robo Girl

Clues: She’s lived in the shadows of superstars. A surfboard? She was worried it would neve be her turn. She found her “pretty little spotlight” and she found a “magical fandom”

Performance: Bad Cinderella from Cinderella – She’s a better singer than I expected. She’s for sure the youngest of the three. She might be a pop or R&B singer, but a more recent vintage. She doesn’t have a big voice. But a lot of pop singers don’t. Stage clue: “Her own opposite Grammy winner” Robin guesses Jenna Dewan. Nicole guesses Keke Palmer. Ken guesses Selena Gomez after being talked out of Cara Delevingne.

First Elimination

One mask will be eliminated NOW after the audience and judges VOTE. Leaving the competition first is…Maize! Mermaid and Robo Girl get ready for the Battle Royal.  Final guesses: Andrew: Jack White. LOL. He’s high. Robin: Nathan Lane Jenny: Mario Cantone Ken: Bowen Yang Nicole: Jonathan Groff. And Maize is…Mario Cantone! I figured Jenny guessed correctly. Mario is cracking up that Andrew thought he was young. MAIZE WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT YOUNG. Andrew is a weirdo.

Battle Royale

Mermaid and Robo Girl sing different versions of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from Evita. Mermaid sings a very Broadway version of the song. Robo Girl brings an odd vibe to her rendition. But she’s powerful and emotive. She wins the battle! She makes the most of her vocal skills, which are somewhat limited.

The panel EXCLUSIVELY decides who stays and who goes home.

Second Elimination

And Robo Girl is crowned the next Queen of the Masked Singer! Mermaid is eliminated. Final guesses: Jenny: Roberta Flack Robin: Gloria Gaynor Ken: Cher Nicole: Gloria Gaynor Andrew: Gloria Estefan. And Mermaid is…Gloria Gaynor! The disco queen!
