The Masked Singer 12 Week 9: Who Was Unmasked on Peanuts Night?

The Masked Singer season 12 continues on to week 9 with Nick Cannon as host, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora on the panel. This week, the series concludes the Group C round that will end in a double elimination. The remaining mask will move on to the Quarterfinal round.

Tonight’s group includes: Sherlock Hound, Strawberry Shortcake, and Royal Knight, who will compete for that ONE remaining spot.

Big news. Or not! The Ding Dong Keep it On Bell twist returned, but the panel used it in the Group B round. NOBODY in this group is eligible to be saved.

The show opens with Robin and Rita singing Hall & Oates “You Make My Dreams Come True.” I’m not sure how this fits the Peanuts theme? John Oates competed on The Masked Singer! In any case, Peanuts characters join them on stage for a special “Thanksgiving.”

Strawberry Shortcake

Clues: She loves Thanksgiving. She was in the Thanksgiving parade. She remembers singing with her mother in the kitchen. Over the years, mom lost her confidence. The song is a message to her.

Performance: I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack – I mentioned this last week, but Strawberry sounds like a country singer and could fit into that world comfortably. She’s not a powerhouse vocalist, but she does sing with a lovely tone. On Stage Clue: Lucy delivers the clues from her psychiatric booth. “Mouse Ears.” She says “Mouse Ears were instrumental on how I got my start.” Robin guesses Kelsea Ballerini. Rita guesses Hailee Steinfeld. Ken guesses Selena Gomez.

Prediction: The internets say Strawberry Shortcake is AJ Michalka from AJ & Aly. Apparently, she’s good friends with her “Masked Ambassador” Hayley Orrantia.

Royal Knight

Clues: Finally she’s living her happily ever after. She had 3 children including a miracle baby. Boomerang. She has been judged and ridiculed.

Performance: Holiday by Madonna – Royal Knight sounds kind of twangy as well. Strawberry Shortcake’s presentation is more polished, however. Royal doesn’t come across like a professional singer, although she can carry a tune. On Stage Clue: “Best selling author.” She says, “I act, I sing, I live my life to my fullest. I even wrote a best selling book all about it.” Rita guesses Anna Faris. Robin guesses Busy Phillips. Jenny guesses Jana Kramer (That’s who the internets say it is.)

Now, family members wish the panelists Happy Thanksgiving. Of course, this show was taped months ago. Heh. And then after the break, Robin plays the Peanuts theme on a Schroeder sized piano (probably miming).

Sherlock Hound

Clues: He’s been known to have a few. “On Strike.” He learned new tricks. He finally found a forever home with a wife.

Performance: “Ho Hey” by Lumineers – He sings like a familiar 90s rocker. Sherlock reminds me of that deep voiced lead singer who performed the song….I think it’s called “Crash?” I don’t believe that is who is under the mask though. On Stage Clue: Pitch Perfect written on an oven mitt. “I’ve had a lot of fun perfecting the pitch of my voice.” Robin guesses former baseball player Bronson Arroyo (That’s who it is, most likely). Rita guesses Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chile Peppers. Jenny guesses Scott Stapp from Creed.

First Unmasking – Who is it?

ONE singer will be unmasked NOW after the audience and panel votes. Royal Knight is eliminated and will unmask. Strawberry Shortcake and Sherlock Hound will compete in the Battle Royale. Final guesses: Rita: Anna Faris. Ken: Kelly Ripa. Jenny: Jana Kramer. Robin: Busy Phillips. And Royal Knight is….Jana Kramer. Jenny appeared on her podcast a few months ago. A wine bottle was a clue. She sings out with “You and I” by Lady Gaga.

Battle Royale

Now, Strawberry Shortcake and Sherlock Hound will sing Shivers by Ed Sheeran in their own styles. Sherlock Hound is first and he rocks it up with big guitars and prominent drums. Next, Strawberry Shortcake gives the song a contemporary pop sound. Sherlock has a better voice, but Strawberry will appeal to more people. The panel will choose the winner. Jenny is bummed that the panel already used the save.

SECOND Unmasking: Who is it?

The winner of the Battle Royale is…Strawberry Shortcake! She moves on to the Quarterfinals! Sherlock Hound is eliminated. Final guesses: Robin: Bronson Arroyo. Ken: Bronson Arroyo. Jenny: Scott Stapp. Rita: Hozier. And YES Sherlock Hound is Bronson Arroyo. He’s been singing since he was in the minor leagues. But he’s ALSO released music which can be found on streaming services. A big giveaway was Barry Zito serving as his Masked Ambassador. He is also a former baseball player who eventually turned to music. Bronson played for my teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox (where he played during the curse breaking season when the Sox won the World Series for the first time in about a century). He also played for the Cincinnati Reds (MOST DEFINITELY NOT MY TEAM. HEH).

Next week: The Quarterfinal will feature Strawberry Shortcake, Goo, Buffalos and Wasp. One singer will be unmasked, while the remaining three move on to the Semi-Finals.
