On the upcoming episode of Songland, four more aspiring songwriters will pitch their tunes to R&B singer-songwriter and guitarist H.E.R. In an episode preview, Canadian artist, Jocelyn Alice, performs “How Could You Not Know?” for H.E.R. and panelists Ester Dean, Shane McAnally and Ryan Tedder.
Canadian singer-songwriter, Jocelyn Alice, was a runner-up on Canadian Popstars at 16. She began performing as a solo artist in 2015 releasing her summer single “Jackpot,” which eventually certified platinum in the country.
Jocelyn’s soulful song gives reminds H.E.R. of Rihanna’s throwback hit “Love on the Brain,” from a few years ago. She calls the song “very powerful” and “in your face.” Shane loves the lyric hook, “how could you not know?” By Ryan suggests “slightly simplifying the arrangement.” H.E.R. and the panel agree and immediately get to work on simplifying the chords in the verse. Ryan also suggest punching up the lyrics, so that it reads more clever rather than “in your face.”
“This is what I always say about a song,” says Jocelyn, “If it sounds good to just a piano or a guitar, then you know you have a good song.”
“It has been such a hard last couple of years,” says Jocelyn tearfully. She adds that the kind words from everybody is “so motivating.” Worth noting: A couple of years ago, in 2017, In 2017, Jocelyn giggled during a rendition of O Canada prior to the MLB All-Star Game in Miami, which caused a bit of a controversy up north.
