Eliminated: Amelia and Janelle, Matthew and Dareian
Tonight was really tough on the dancers. There was NO way to bring back iconic Mia Michaels routines without inviting comparisons. Some of the best dancers SYTYCD ever produced were the original dancers! It was a battle some of these kids weren’t going to win. Some things are better left in the past.
I have to say that I am shocked Amelia was sent home. She seemed like a front runner for sure. But I knew she was toast after Nigel criticized her two weeks in a row. I was sad to to Dareian leave the competition–even if he does have bad feet.
So now we’re down to the Top 10. Next week, the contestants will be joined by the All-Stars. No word on who they might be yet.

Tonight’s show is dedicated to the work of Mia Michaels! She’s sitting in the audience. The Top 14 will all be dancing classic routines from Mia! The Top 10 will be revealed tonight. Only one guy and one girl will be saved by the judges.
Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt – The Ballet Boys from the Royal Ballet are tonight’s guest judges.
“Hanging On” by Active Child – Top 14 Group Routine
The contestants will touch on the moments that inspired the contestants from the last 8 seasons of SYTYCD.
Cyrus and Eliana – “Door Routine” (Katie and Twitch) – “Mercy” by Duffy – Nigel is having trouble dissociating from the original people. So am I! I can’t help but compare these two to Katie and Twitch, and not favorably. Twitch and Katie were fiercer, and had more chemistry. Nigel gives Cyrus some technical tips. He feels Eliana can create strong characters without sacrificing technique. He thought they made it their own. Mary calls Eliana “swaggerocious”. She notes Cyrus’ “tickle” ripple at the door. Thinks he’s a great entertainer. The ballet boys are bringing a fresh set of eyes. Billy loves watching a ballet girl and hip hop boy dancing together.

Time to recap National Dance Day!
George and Tiffany – Hometown Glory (Katie and Josh) – “Hometown Glory” by Adele – I didn’t love this as much as the original, either, but it was still beautiful. Mia wanted them to murder the routine and Mary thinks they did. The assisted lift was perfect. George elevated the role. Michael thought they had fantastic energy. Tiffany stopped partnering in some parts. Nigel thinks we’ve seen the best of George tonight Both did an excellent job.

Will and Amelia – The Butt Dance (Randy and Evan) – “Koop Island Blues” by Koop – I thought they did a great job interpreting this dance. This quirky trifle was perfect for the pair. Nigel remembers the original vividly. He loves that Mia’s work is so eclectic. He didn’t think they brought the characters to the routine. Mary liked it. She thought Will was a little over the top. Amelia is exquisite. Billy thought it was strong and musical.

Janelle and Dareian – The Bed Routine – (Carrington and Twitch) – “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” – Dareian was gorgeous in this routine! Michael thinks the choreo is wonderful He notes Dareian’s terrible feet. He found Janelle’s hair distracting. Nigel thinks it’s Mia Michaels at her best. It was almost a solo piece from Dareian. Janelle didn’t stand out. Mary didn’t feel the raw passion from Janelle. She also loved Dareian.

Audrey and Matthew – (Neil and Lacey) “Time” by Billy Porter – This is the piece about Mia’s late Dad. – I didn’t see the original piece to compare, but although it was danced beautifully, the story was lost on me. Mary is in tears. She didn’t feel the real passion from Neil, but Audrey is a shining star. Billy had a problem will Neil who couldn’t hide his effort. Mia’s dad was the Marlboro man? Nigel didn’t think Neil brought joy to the dance.

Witney and Chehon – The Bench (Travis and Heidi) – “Calling You” by Celine Dion – A really great interpretation of this classic routine from Witney and Chehon. The story is about Mia being in love with a gay man. Nigel thought the message came across. Mary also thought they pulled it off. Chehon needs to relax more. Witney was fearless. Michael loves Salt Lake dancers. He tells Chehon he’s always got a job with the ballet boys.

Lindsay and Cole – Addiction (Kayla and Kupono) – “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles – I think I preferred Kupono’s menace over Cole’s… weirdness. But they both brought something fresh and interesting to the routine. Billy was very impressed. It’s Mary’s favorite routine. It’s her favorite of the night. Nigel has been a little disappointed tonight. But thinks these two have come out on top. He was so freaked out by Cole, his reaction was bleeped out.
