Simon Cowell: Ryan Seacrest KIIS Interview

Simon Cowell was interviewed this morning by Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show. Listen after the jump:

Simon told the nail-biting tale of driving to yesterday’s press conference, still without an X Factor agreement. Terms were settled at the last minute, and he signed the papers in front of the critics assembled in Pasadena.

“You got to know when it’s time to go, ” Simon said. At one point, he planned to do both shows, but in the end decided it would be too much. “You know about overexposure, right?” said Simon, “I genuinely thought people would be sick and tired of me.”

“It all came together in the last few days, ”   admitted Simon. And that last minute snafu? Simon blamed it on the lawyers “getting a little bit uptight.”   Simon said, “We all shook hands…there were people around me in tears.”

The X Factor has a host, but Simon would not reveal who it is. “You’ll have to wait to see, ” he said. Simon would neither confirm nor deny that Paula Abdul would be joining him on the judges panel.

What will Simon miss on Idol? “Everything, ” he said. “We had fun, didn’t we…”

2nd Update: Added Extra interview with Terri Seymour. Simon says the first Season of Idol was his favorite, because he didn’t know what was going to happen.

  1. Mark my words: this will be AI’s best season ever. Why? Not because of Ellen, not because Paula left, and not because Allison will (hopefully) perform (although, that would be enough for me). Simon needs to sell himself so that people will follow him to X-Factor. If he is the same desinterested a55 he was during S8, many might not. If he is smart (and we know he is), he’ll give people what they want every night.

  2. That was interesting. Simon, I think, is feeling a little sad. So is Ryan. I think I heard more emotions from these two during that interview than we’ll ever hear publicly again.

ETA: LoveDaRocker, I think you may be right!

  3. he’s got a point on the overexposure issue…i watched idol and xfactor this year…and now can’t stand the guy

Except!… Simon’s schtick on American Idol is to be the a$$y, super critical judge who every contestant tries to please. If you’ve seen the clips from the UK, on the X-Factor Simon is much more “pleasant,” and since he mentors a group of performers, he is never critical of them, even when they deserve it. So, will America be as happy with this new Simon who will be giving standing ovations to subpar performances because the act happens to be in the group he’s mentoring?

How will he reconcile these two, very different roles and will the American people buy it?

(If you remember Season 7, you got a taste of this during Top three night. Although Cook was certainly deserving, Simon and Randy were in a virtual pissing contest throughout the night.)

  5. Question on Britain’s X-Factor (sorry I know I can look this up), but how long has it been on the air and has there ever been a yr. when someone Simon has not mentored, won? If no one has this in their head, I’ll search the answer(s). Thanks! :D

  6. Ryan is extremely upset. I heard his show, and at one point, when he talked about this news, someone in the studio said he has tears in his eyes. And Simon is sad as well.

Well, it’s not like anyone’s holding a gun to anyone’s head.

Anyway, I forget. At what stage in the show do the people begin voting on X-factor. I think it’s later than on Idol, right?

Its top 5 right? Before then, the audience votes but the judges decides who gets to go home. So in that sense its kind of like “so you think you can dance.”

  9. Is there anything preventing Ryan from hosting X Factor too?

Although I’d be just as happy with Nick Lachey or Cat Dealey.

Good question. I like Cat but I think Ryan is a good host for AI too. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I’d be crying too if things were happening that could mean a big chunk of my bread and butter might be going down the toilet. ;)

That’s my point. I don’t think he was that type of judge last season. I want him to be an a55 when necessary, but also, to be intellectually honest, as he used to be. IMHO, duringn S8 the balance fell excessively towards pimping, and honesty was lacking.
I don’t want to get into specific examples to avoid fan-wars. My username, though, might explain why I feel the way I do.

  13. I’d be crying too if things were happening that could mean a big chunk of my bread and butter might be going down the toilet.

    No, it was personal.
Ryan still getting huge money from Idol, and he has other gigs, as prestigious and perspective s Idol.

When you own a bakery you don’t worry about chunks of bread and butter…ryan makes a fortune, and he has a contract to be paid, likely whether or not AI continues, for a period of years….I suspect that he is emotional just like any one of us would be emotional when one of our long time co-workers leaves.

You might have already found the answers but just in case you haven’t: this year was the 6th season of X-factor and I think Simon has won as a mentor only two times, the first season and the third with Leona Lewis.

I rather like that system. Of course it means the one sent home isn’t necessarily the lowest vote getter. Released X Factor voting results showed that Jedward got eliminated when they weren’t lowest.

  17. X Factor does two awesome things:

The vote totals for the entire season are released hours after the finale wraps up.

Performances and judges comments are posted in HD on You Tube with hours of the episode airing.

I agree those are nice features. However, will those features make it into X Factor USA? The features they highlight are that there are no (high) age limit, groups can participate, and judges mentor contestants.
I can see how they might hold releasing the number of votes to avoid (negative) comparissons to AI, and hold releasing the videos so that people have to tune in into the Fox affiliates broadcasting the show.

I LOVE the fact that they relaese the vote totals. AI would get rid of so many “conspiracy theories” if they did the same.

  20. My Fav part is that the judges decide who go’s home for half the season

  21. Thanks mmk28!! I found out that he hasn’t won every yr., but didn’t know how many he had or hadn’t won.

Knowing that Simon hasn’t won every year helps me be more accepting of the show. ;)

Hmmm, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out. It seems that some of the differences are changes that would have been good for idol. I wonder if Simon realized this and thought, I might as well bring X-Factor here! Well, that and the power and money…

One thing I like about Idol is that if the contestants are strong they can hold onto their own identities, but I’m not sure this is the case w/ X Factor. I just don’t know enough about it….
