Shi’Ann Jones – The Voice Season 13 Spotlight (VIDEO)

Shi'Ann Jones The Voice Season 13 Contestant

The Voice Season 13 Contestant Spotlight #12: Shi’Ann Jones

Watch The Voice season 13 contestant, Chris Shi’Ann Jones perform Ray Charles’ “Drown In My Own Tears” for her Blind Audition. The performance earned her a chair turn from Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson who could not believe the soulful singer was only 15 years old. Actually, Jennifer wanted Sh’Ann for Team JHud so much, he threats kept the others from pushing their buttons.

The teen performer, from Bowling Green, Kentucky, has been singing ever since she was 3-years-old. Coached by her father, Shi’Ann has shared snippets of her singing on Youtube, where she covers a wide range of artists from Alicia Keys to Adele. She lists her favorite singers as Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Demi Lovato.

“She is not afraid of the stage. When she opens her mouth it’s like a whole different world,” her mother, Marilyn Jones, said in an interview with bgdailynews.com. “She knows what she wants to be. She asks her daddy, ‘When is my next singing engagement?’” Her father has had a large impact on her musical career, and Shi’Ann even says that she draws a lot of inspiration from him. “I want to be like my dad because he sang and played the piano a little bit,” Shi’Ann explained.

This is not the first experience Shi’Ann has had with The Voice. Last year she competed on the show’s Snapchat competition, and made it deep into the game. She sang a snippet of Who’s Lovin’ You, by the Jackson 5, and out of the over 20,000 submissions, went to the finals as a member of Team Alicia Keys. Shi’Ann didn’t win the digital competition, but now has one upped her performance last year by appearing on the real deal show this season.

Compared to some of her fellow contestants, Shi’Ann has a quiet presence on social media. Her most prominent account is on Youtube, where she has shared numerous cover videos. Shi’Ann will bring to this season of The Voice her big aspirations, budding talent, and creativity.

Overall Thoughts: I’m a little worried for Shi’Ann this season. I was watching through a couple of her videos, and I’m becoming more and more convinced that she’s too young for this competition. I hear pleasant noise when she sings, but there is a lack of substance or that special something that allows me to connect with her. This is something she’ll acquire with time, but right now I don’t think she’s ready, and I wish she had waited a few more years. Maybe she’ll surprise me this season, which I am more than hoping for, but right now I just think she’s doomed to an early exit. I would love to see her bring out the piano at some point in the competition though. My advice to Shi’Ann is to work on her emoting and to keep her song selections as current as possible. Nonetheless I’m still a fan and pulling for her.

Song Suggestions:

1- Take A Bow, by Rihanna
2- All Of Me, by John Legend
3- Taking Chances, by Celine Dion
