This is our continuation of our preview of possible Season 9 contestants. Remember, that the Hollywood round doesn’t occur until January 9th this year. We don’t know how far any of these contestants might go. And since we never see some of the competition round contestants until the competition starts, we might never see some of these people. We might have even found the wrong person with the same name.

How is this girl not signed? She’s been working professionally since she was 9. She’s good looking. She’s an excellent performer. Her voice has an amazing tone. She’s won awards. She’s even done jingles. To use one of Randy’s more coherent phrases, she can blow. What’s her story? Well, that story is only going to help. American Idol likes to work the backstory and this poor girl was diagnosed with cancer just as her career was taking off. Naturally, she had to put it on the back-burner in order to get healthy. There is a SuBo type story they can work with.

Unless this girl folds like a rusty lawn chair during Hollywood, I can’t see her being anything other than a front runner. Period. Especially in the year of the girl. She can sing. She can play an instrument. She can hit a glory note. She’s an American Idol contestant sent over straight from central casting.

Let’s see what our judges say:
Randy: Red Hot Lava Bomb! Yo! You sang your face OFF!
Kara: Total Package
Simon: You’re Commercial. I like you.

What do you think?

  1. unless the TPTB blow it by overpimping her, turning the voting public off, she should be Top 3, at least.

  2. She has a show listed on her Myspace for Jan 7th – if she made it to Hollywood week would she be able to do this? I thought last year they couldn’t perform after 12/31 – or is that because they had already been chosen as the top 36?

  3. Aus_fan

    Prediction: She wins! :)

Yeah no kidding. I love the tone of her voice and the way she sings. :)

  4. I thought last year they couldn’t perform after 12/31 – or is that because they had already been chosen as the top 36?

At that point last year, the Idols had been selected for the top 50 (or whatever) for the chairs episode. The odds are still pretty slim that people will make it on the show, so I imagine they couldn’t tell them they couldn’t do their jobs (many of them are professional musicians).

Or maybe the spoilers are wrong. I think this girl would be good on the show, though.

  5. I like her, and I think she is talented, but I don’t really see how she is that current… She has an “old soul” voice which I think is really great but I wonder if that will affect her or not.

  6. Wow… someone showed me some videos of her a few days ago, and I’m still blown away. I totally think she could be current: she’s a mashup of Alicia Keys, Joss Stone, and even a little Mariah Carey… I can’t wait to see how she fares this season!

  7. Funny, she does nothing for me! She sounds like lots of great wedding singers I’ve seen perform. Have you listened to Rattle the Walls, her album on iTunes?

Maybe with different material, but I’m just not getting how she’s the next big thing. At all.

  8. I see many Joss Stone type comments referring to Alex, at many forum and blogs. That may be her undoing, as Joss Stone is to rich of a taste for the average Idol viewer. Her fate on the show depends on what direction she chooses to take musically. Will she get enough of a pop artist vibe to get more than the musically mature audience to vote for her.

  9. OMG IM FROM SIMI VALLEY!!! i think my older brother might have graduated with her.

i hope she goes on into the top 10. i woul be all about that.

  10. She didn’t knock me out, either. Too stylized and her upper register bordered on shrill. I guess if you like a lot of melisma, but to me, less is more. I don’t think she’ll be the next Alicia Keys.

  11. I haven’t listened to any of the youtubes or anything from anyone so far, at all. But I had to comment on this – as far as the backstory goes, they need to be honest about her prior experience and not gloss over it, like they’ve had a tendency to do in the past. I’m sure they won’t, because they never do and the bitching of all of us “irrelevant” (according to Nigel) internet fans doesn’t seem to budge them. But I think sometimes the knowledge of that experience enhances it even more – especially in her case, with her story.

I’ll probably wait until we at least see some of the televised auditions before I come back and listen to their youtubes and other stuff. But I agree with you Kirsten – unless this girl has a complete meltdown during Hollywood week, I can see them pimping her to high heaven. She’s definitely got a compelling backstory.

  12. I totally think she could be current: she’s a mashup of Alicia Keys, Joss Stone, and even a little Mariah Carey

I was thinking the exact. same. thing… Alicia + Joss!
But current? Alicia & Joss are so 2000-&-late, unfortunately.
If her career had launched in 2000, she’d so have had hit records then!
Today, she can use AI to launch a successful-in-my-niche career, like Mandisa.

  13. She’s incredibly talented. I think she’ll need to pop it up to do well in the competition though. The blues/R&B, which she’s awesome at, isn’t that popular right now. People vote for people who sing stuff they want to hear in this competition.

that said, I hope that she stays herself and does her music her way and finds a way to make the genres/themes work within her sound (like Kris generally did this year), because it’s a great sound.

  14. But she is from California. Can she win ?
Maybe Simi Valley is better than Los Angeles (a la Kat McPhee) in terms of supports.
I still wish Kat won that year.

  15. I do agree that she is virtually a top 24 lock, unless she completely collapses in Hollywood week. She seems to have EVERYTHING going for her.

  16. I like her even better than the indie songstress!
There is a lot of personality in her voice, and helluva lot of texture too.
She’s a double threat…..Now can she dance too?
