Sales News – Week Ending – 11/10/16

Susan Boyle from BGT released another album, her seventh, this week and she is set to debut at 46th on the sales chart. In 2009, her “I Dreamed a Dream” was released Thanksgiving weekend and topped the chart for 6 weeks to become the second best selling album of that year (3.1M) behind Taylor Swift.

Meanwhile, Pentatonix spends their third week in the top 10 in the sales and combined appearing to move up a spot to fifth. They are well on their way to have the Christmas Album of the year. Their album from last year is also selling well at 17th (33 combined).

Carrie Underwood’s “Storyteller”, released more than a year ago, is 35th on sales and 45th on combined. She also appears at 45th on combined. She has a duet with Keith Urban on “Ripcoord” which is 15th on sales and 16th on combined.

There are 5 albums debuting in the top 10 this week. Bon Jovi (who had a great week mentoring on Idol in Season 6) is debuting first. “This House is Not for Sale” is their 13th album and will be their 6th number one. Alicia Keys, currently a coach on The Voice, is 2nd on both charts followed by “The Trolls” Soundtrack. Now 60 is 4th in sales and features nobody we track. Common debuts 8th on sales. Hold-overs from previous weeks are Pentatonix, Kenny Chesney (last week’s number one), Lady Gaga (number one two weeks ago) Hamilton and Avenged Sevenfold.

Bon Jovi is one of the examples that shows that Idol Theme Weeks could be awesome. When it was announced that Bon Jovi was going to be the theme for Top 6 of Season 6, there was much gnashing of teeth in the Idoldome. How could a season that featured 3 R&B powerhouse females, 1 male beat-boxer, 1 male R&B and 1 countryish guy cover the full-throated Jersey rockers that had been kicking around since the 80s? The episode had train wreck written all over it. It turned into one of the best weeks of the seasons. Lakisha who didn’t even know who Bon Jovi was, was forced to throw away her list of over-sung songs and find an absolute gem she played on. Phil Stacey went out in a blaze of glory while Blake Lewis re-wrote the future of Idol by creatively re-arranging “You Give Love a Bad Name”. After Season 6, it would become difficult to win the show without the ability to flip songs on their ear.
