Sales News – Week Ending – 03/03/16

Three Idols are featured in the top 50 this week. Original recipe American Idol Kelly Clarkson leads the charge after her water-cooler moment on the Idol stage last week. Her album had long ago left the top 50, but now it is back in the top 10. Carrie Underwood’s latest album is 39th and Daughtry’s compilation album is 42nd. Carrie also appears on the Grammy Nominees album at 13th.

The top of the sales chart belongs to The 1975 who are an Alt Rock band out of Manchester. Right behind them is fellow counterperson Adele who is rarely far from the top. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis debut in third with an album which is more personal/introspective than their hit-making previous album. Chris Stapleton has bionic legs since his award show performance months ago and Bonnie Raitt debuts at 5th. Now 57 is 6th followed by the Bieb’s who has set up a tent at 7th. Joey and Rory continue to sell well for a Christian album. Anthrax, thrash metal, debuts at 10th.

There is an app for that and that now includes allowing artists to track royalties from streaming. Usually, record labels do their best to be as opaque as possible when it comes to royalty payments, but Sony Music Sweden has given their artists an app that allows them to track royalties from streaming, demographic profiles of their listeners and where they hot in the world right now. Very useful for the artists, but surprising that the label wants to share information about the money. Most recording contracts allow artists to audit the books because no layperson can ever make sense of those royalty payments.
